FORMED A BAND, WE FORMED A BAND!

Yes, this is another Art Brut thread (have there even been many others?). I try to stay away from all of these late 70s/early 80s punk/new wave revivalists that have been popping up everywhere lately, but this song really kicks ass.

It sounds exactly like some other bands, but I can't put my finger on any of them. What bands should I check out since I really like this song? (and please, don't say the Ramones...).

That One Guy (That One Guy), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Buy Rough Trade's compilation of early singles and sessions from The Fall.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

(for clarification, I went back and found the title: Totally Wired: The Rough Trade Anthology)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

It's weird, I thought they were kind of like a messed up variant of The Fall! Except nothing I've heard by The Fall has impressed me. I think they're tame.

I'm not a big Fall fan either, but that's the closest comparison I could draw.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

If you think the Fall are tame you should hear "Prole Art Threat" (amongst others).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

They're a bit like Ikara Colt, only not rubbish.

M Annoyman (Ferg), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I think "Formed A Band" is annoying, but I love Mclusky.

I have. I got into a long argument as to why I should like The Fall once before, I'd rather not endure it again.

Minty.

I'd forogotten they existed until t'other day, when I discovered that Patrick Wolf was a former member. Greatest art pop group of all time.

D.G. Jones (D.G. Jones), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

The single has a moronic intensity that just keeps getting better. I haven't been so taken with a record since "Gay Bar"(no, stay with me).

It must be quite difficult to achieve such a brutal garage production in this era. Nothing happens smoothly. Instuments are suddenly right up in your fucking face with a brutal CLUNK. The vocal has that headlong KBD careering first-take quality - which may be entirely fake - but who cares? Reminds me simultaneously of ATV's "Action, Time, Vision" and whoever-the-fuck-it-was "My United States of Whatever".

So, =CLASSIC. Compared to Travis. Or Radiohead. Or whatever. The fact that so many people hate it makes me want to buy the CD.

Art Brut : British indie rock :: Butters : South Park

I mean this in the best possible way.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Thursday, 16 June 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

i've been trying to work out for a while exactly what so turns me off about that record (apart from the nagging sense of insincerity in their sarcasm/irony). the comparison with mclusky suddenly makes things a bit clearer though...

not really related to this discussion, but my mp3 of "formed a band" has an instrumental song before the main one starts. is this a track hidden on the CD before 0:00?

I don't know Art Brut but I love Mclusky and have really tried to get into The Fall but it just ain't happening. They sound really dated to me. The instrumentation never really grabs me and Smith's rants do so only occasionally.

Mclusky > The Fall

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Thursday, 16 June 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

(by the way your Departure review today made me laugh out loud several times.)

(because they make very godawful music)

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Thursday, 16 June 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Thank you very much.

The album is #60 in the midweeks, so it looks like they're not going to get to release a second album on a major.

Yay.
