Conscious lift by the Stefani crew or just coincidence?

"Only You" is one of the loveliest '80s electro songs. I ::heart:: Alison Moyet.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

If "Only You" had been recorded on piano instead of synth, it'd be among my all-time-top. Still a marvelous record, and Moyet is a treasure. That said, I haven't heard the Stefani track: Is it that similar?

i agree "Only You" is glorious. But I don't agree that it would be better on piano instead of synth. I love the sound of Vince Clarke's synth work from those years!

I just heard the Yaz song for the first time last week thanks to "The Office" special; lovely song for a lovely scene, made a point of googling the lyrics and all that. yeah 'Cool does lift the structure of the chorus although it ends up having a different 'flavor' overall imo.

Death to Gwen.

maybe it's gwen's tribute to yaz!

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

"Only You" by faaaaar. Unlike, say, "Don't Speak", I cannot hear "Cool" without thinking of its metatext, and imagining gwen singing those goofy words to tony kanal makes me bananas. b-a-na-na-s.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Clarification: not because it's Tony Kanal, but just because the plainspokenness is excruciating. Swap in generic love song lyrics, and I'm down.

I can't hear the opening of "Don't Speak" without thinking of "Dream On" by Aerosmith.

she wanted to make something real

She bought a synth and an arpeggiator? And she threw her computer out the window? xpost

"Only You" by Yazoo (was that just an American thing?)
