another annoying iTunes question--has this happened to you?

Anyone had this happen before?

This morning I turned on the computer and began ripping a CD into iTunes (The Conet Project!) When iTunes opened, it was just a box that said "importing iTunes library," which shouldn't have needed to be imported. This ran for ten minutes, and then the program crashed (dialog box comes up, program has 'unexpectedly shut down')...so I restarted the computer and when I opened iTunes, about 1/5 of my library was there, and all my playlists were erased, several of which I spend months building. So I had to reimport all my music files from the hard drive into iTunes, and now must being the long process of picking through and sculpting it again. Grrrr. Anyone had this happend before?

yes, this happened to me 2 weeks ago (3rd time its actually happened). i lost about 25 albums worth of songs. really annoying to say the least. i had to start all over making my Incredibly Insane Divas CD mix. YOU HAVE NO IDEA THE PAIN!

I still seem to have all my songs as far as I can tell, but I just have to reconstruct the library (which I keep at 40 gig because I auto-synch the iPod and the playlists. They're on my iPod still, but I gotta go thu and click and drag them all again, gonna take hours. Why does this happen?

well that is good. i'm stupd and don't have an ipod, so mine are gone gone. boo hoo.

What usually seems to happen on these threads is that a devout mac user will pop up and say "this feature here, in this menu, backs up your playlist to X location". I'll wait for that to happen.

iTunes playlists = playlist. Just the one xml file, apparently a vital part of the application (or so apple would have you believing & behaving as if it were). If there isn't a back up feature included there probably should be. I'm sure there will be a scriptlet for it?

several of which I spend months building

This boggles the mind.

and

The Conet Project!

This can't be a coincidence. There's untold information, secret stuff locked in that recording.

My spent months building I mean I'd add songs here and there over several months. My main playlist is simply my favorite songs i.e. songs I'll never skip, hence I add to it as I hear stuff I really like.

If there isn't a back up feature included there probably should be.

i think the "backup" application has an option to back up yr library to CD or a .mac account. (what do you mean, you don't have a .mac account?) by "library" i simply mean the file that's called "iTunes 4 Music Library" ... but to be honest you can just do it yrself. after all, it's only one file. it lives in ~/Music/iTunes.

(the associated XML file isn't important, from what i can see. but fuck it, why not back it up too?)

anyway. this thread reminds me: i'm long overdue such antics. fuck.

someone somewhere said it was possible to split your library in two. how do you do this?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

(short of building a different library under a different login on the same computer, that is)

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

alba knows about this. [looks round pathetically.] al-ba!

pah.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

ah, this looks helpful

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

woah. i've also just remembered a) how shit backup.app is and b) how shit the iDisk is. word of advice: if you are going to use a .mac account, do it all manually.

bah this is for osx only (I still only have a windows box at home)....damn

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

fuck, sorry.

ten years pass...

What the hell...I just downloaded the Velvets box to my iPhone, but when I plug it in to my computer at work, a lot of the songs are grayed out--and they play on my iphone fine. Does itunes just randomly prevent you from listening to music that you PAID for and OWN? Jesus H Christ
