Gabba-Classic or dud

Hey kids!Do you like Gabba??..My first encounter with Gabba was the Thunderdome compilations and they bugged the tits offa me and strayed well into novelty territory (gabba versions of the theme to 'Bonanza' and so forth). Although recently I seem to be downloading nothing but Gabba tracks at the moment especially anything by The Horrorist. So Gabba--a furious fuck-you roar of rave raucousness of fascistic death metal for monged basket-cases??I quite like Gabba. I like to bang my head to it. Mind how you go though there is quite a lot of shit gabba out there too.

Michael Bourke, Friday, 16 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic of course. I could never quite keep up with it although I sort of was there when it was born (being a dutch raver at the time 91-92). Strange how closed off it remained to other influences throughout the years (unlike say jungle). Anyway when it's good it really is amazing.

Omar, Friday, 16 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I say classic - though i have given up on the genre cos it hasn't progressed very much since it's fruition. Probably the first type of electronic music I ever got into... Now I'm more into Warp Records/Rephlex style stuff.

Charlie Frame, Friday, 16 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It does one particular thing and it does it very very well. Is that thing worth doing? I would argue yes. In some ways it's the ultimate dance music. Which is not to say I ever listen much to it. But, classic.

absolutely classic the technohead compilations where a great introduction .,. but "i wanna be a hippy" was pritty bad.. simon reynolds book energy flash has a good chapter on gabba ..

jk, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

english muffin was pretty good. and lenny dee did some ok stuff.

didn't paul elstak go really commercial or something. knowledge really sketchy here.

gareth, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah Elstak went pretty commercial around 96? 97? Made some very popular happy-rave tunes with female singer. Then disappeared from radar. Odds are good that he's a trance dj now. But I'm not sure.

Is there even anyone out there still making it (proper Gabba I mean, not hardcore techno)? I used to live for this stuff when I was 16.

Gabba is so CLASSIC! I like that a lot of it's elements have been adopted by the breakcore acts like DJ Donna Summer, Ladyscraper etc. Mixing it up with other extreme techno genres keeps it fresh and startling, rather than just turning into white noise after a while. I've been enjoying this totally mad mix by DJ Rainbow Ejaculation which combines Breakcore, Gabba, Happy Hardcore and that kind of thing, with everything speeded up as fast as possible and nothing sticking around for longer than about 25 seconds.

i remember reading about this in Spin and then seeing the MTV News report on gabba in 1996/1997 and being like O_O and it was probably the only time I actually HEARD this music until the YouTube age.

It's so funny to think that there could be a teeming subculture that a suburban teen can be exposed to, like, exactly once when now MTV does a story on Deerhunter or whatever and kids in Montana are like "UGH WE FUCKING KNOW, LATE PASS!"

^^^otm^^^

my dutchy teammate pronounces it "ckhaabaar" with the first syllable similar to "chutzpah" in yiddish with the deep throaty loogy hocking sound.
