donut e-goo (donut), Thursday, 16 June 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Have tickets gone on sale yet donut?

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

donut :...have you ever been to a show at the vera project? curious as to how big the venue is . definately want to make the trip down as i am pretty sure they won't play vancouver anytime soon.

william (william), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

It has been a LONG time since Shellac put out an album.

I'd like to see them again.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

The Vera Project is definitely smaller than the Showbox, if that gives you a hint. They were big enough to hold a crowd for The Ex, who played there last year though. It's sizeable enough, but think of something more like The Crocodile, or something like Richard on Richard's minus the balcony area. A couple of hundred at most.

Which means, yes, I want to get tickets the moment they go on sale.

Not sure if the Sunday show will be their classic 10am-er, but it's *entirely* possible.

donut e-goo (donut), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

It's an all ages place too... so while it will be smoke free (yay), it will be hella packed and sweaty.. but oh well, I think it will be worth it. :)

donut e-goo (donut), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

Dear Albini & Co.: time spent on tour could be better spent RECORDING AND RELEASING AN ALBUM DUDEZ okthzbye

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Do people tape their live shows?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

Yes.
There are a bunch of them on slsk, approx. 1/8 search results for 'Shellac', but I've never heard any except for the David Yow-led Sex Pistols cover concert.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

There's a show from France from last year that features all the new live songs they played at ATP/The Scala in 2005. Sound quality not perfect, but good enough.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I thought I'd caught that one...

That's not really how it works

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

I know. I'm just bitter.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

shellac is playing subterranean?! whoa.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

I know they make money from their albums, but, you know, I'm far more avid a Shellac live show fan than I am a Shellac album fan. BRING ON THE SHOWS!

Also, I hope all these Sunday shows are 10am-ers.

donut e-goo (donut), Thursday, 16 June 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Saw 'em in Mpls a few months ago.

Played I'd say almost an albums worth of new stuff....one new song, Steady As She Goes, is fucking instant classik (very At Action Park)

other new one reminded us of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, and instrumental about a cat (according to Steve).

In other news, rocking is good, the long-drawn out pause schtick on Wingwalker and Billiard Player song is getting pretty played out....other than the boring mid-section, they were tight, fast, and in control....most of the new stuff sounded good, I'm not sure how I feel about "The End of Radio" which uses the "Can you hear me now?" line from the commercial and I wonder if it's not about John Peel.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

also in End of Radio Steve keeps saying "MAR-TIN-A NA-VRUH-TA-LOVA! MAR-TIN-A NA-VRUH-TA-LOVA!" like Beavis saying Teepee for my bunghole!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

can anyone hook me up with a live cdr of one of the new shows?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 16 June 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

xpost - They played "The End of Radio" at last years (March 2004) ATP, so way before Peel's death. It may be about Peel but certainly wasn't connected to his death at all.

Personally, I think "The End of Radio" has the makings of one of the best things they have ever done and as aldo points out, is on the French live thing.

I have thie French gig in my slsk shared folder if anyone cares to try to download it (knowing the present vagaries of slsk, the best of luck to you). I'll keep the slsk link open for the next 7 or 8 hours or so. User name is Brother_Danielson - look for the folder named "shellac - la maroquinerie, 29-3-04"

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Thursday, 16 June 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

I think there are a few different versions of End of Radio floating around Soulseek. I'm pretty sure the one I've got was played at the BBC studio after Peel's death and I'm almost positive it's about and dedicated to him.

Shaun (shaun), Thursday, 16 June 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

argh!!!
tickets are available for this but the online purchasing seems to be messed up for me. if anyone is able to grab me a ticket for the seattle saturday night show i will make arrangements to repay them with paypal. please!!!!

and donut, the sunday show is at 8:00pm.....no 10:00 am show sunday.

william (william), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

I just bought mine without problems... william, if it's a problem, I can email the vera folks tomorrow and ask if I can just buy them there.. my connecting bus stop in downtown seattle is right next to the vera project, so it would (hopefully) just be a matter of buying them there.

But try the ticketweb thing again.. It worked for me.

donut e-g (donut), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

william, did you still have problems getting tickets?

donut e-g (donut), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

MR DONUT:.
...yes indeed i did. all seemed to be working fine for me today. i am always a little hesitant about *will call* tickets though. i look forward to visiting your emerald city again.[can you tell i was listening to USE today?]

william (william), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

the days aren't technically getting longer, but the feeling's gettin' stronger. :)

donut e-g (donut), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

(also, I always print out will-call/online ticket stuff, just in case. Each online ticket should have a conf. number in any case.)

donut e-g (donut), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

Arg.

Brian Wilson is doing smile the same time as the Sunday Shellac show.. now i REALLY wish it was a 10am show. :( Oh well. In case Brian Wilson falls through, I can see the boys rock again on Sunday. (I can't really sell a Will Call ticket, is the thing.. also, it wasn't too much, and if Vera Project gets bonus money out of this, so be it.)

donut e- (donut), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

I should clarify that Brian Wilson is doing this at a separate venue the same night the same time.. hahaa... he's not going to be doing Smile in the recreational area of the Vera.. (only if). Wilson is playing the Paramount Theater the same Sunday night.. that's all.

donut e- (donut), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

I saw Shellac last night! It was pretty good. I've never really listened to them before.

deej.., Monday, 11 July 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

new shellacjams > brian wilson's "smile"

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

seeing Shellac one night and seeing Brian Wilson the next night > seeing Shellac twice two nights in a row.

seeing Shellac one night, seeing Shellac the next MORNING with free pastries, then seeing Brian Wilson later on that day >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> above.

..which is why I'm now pissed.

donut e- (donut), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

well "pissed" in a "oh woe is me, my life is less than grand" way.. of course. I really shouldn't be complaining.

donut e- (donut), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah the bass player (bob?) said they're going to release a new album. I was surprised how young Albini still looks.

deej.., Monday, 11 July 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

...really hope i don't see this.

ihttp://www.bobwestonsunderpants.com/

william (william), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

funnier with the pic.

http://www.bobwestonsunderpants.com/underpants.jpg

william (william), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

hahahaa

deej.., Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

that's scary.. not the underpants, just the idea that someone would pay money and register that domain name.

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

hehheh...according to the shellac list ,sunday in chicago was a charity show and weston and albini said they would strip for serious cash. good on them for following through i guess.

william (william), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

I think the one of the first Shellac shows ever was actually at a strip club.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I was there, first they wanted Bob to take off his shirt but he refused. Then he said for 100$ for the benefit he'd take off his pants, and someone dropped a 100$ bill. Steve said the same thing, and trickly amounts of cash came up, somewhere around 30 bucks, then someone supplied him w a 100$ bill too. Priceless.

deej.., Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

Heh...that's pretty funny.

van nostrum (Buck Van Smack), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

If they're still doin' the Q&A thing mid-set, I'm probably going to ask if they're willing to strip for cash as a benefit for the Vera Project at the Seattle show on Saturday.

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Ask bob if he's seen the website!

deej.., Thursday, 14 July 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

I'll let the folks south of me ask that.. haha.

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Thursday, 14 July 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Double laughs! Bob has seen it!

so ken....any reviews from last nights show?

drone/a/saur (william), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

BTW, I'm more than down to do a hangout/FAP thing pre-Shellac this Saturday... I was thinking of something around 5:30pm to 6pm somewhere in Belltown.. some place where it would be easy to just go to Vera right after.. Noodle Ranch? Toi? That pizza place on 1st? "OMG like Hot Dog On A Stick at the Westlake Mall LOL!"?

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Actually, what time does Beecher's Cheese shop close at Pike Place market? I would be down for a cheese picnic at the park just north of the market.

mmm chipotle cheese curds.

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

...i know i will be looking for something to eat by then having worked up an appetite browsing the easybeat bins upon my arrival in seattle. mr donut, let me know if a location is chosen. them curds sound strangely appealing.

drone/a/saur (william), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Drone/a/saur, where are you coming from? worse comes to worse, email me at d o n u t b i z i t c h at hotmail dot com. I thought you wuz a localz! :)

I'm thinking of grabbing pizza in Belltown (which is basically where the Vera Project is..) before the show. I'll have to get the name of that place, location, and post the info here. It's a great place to hang out and talk beforehand.

donut gon' nut (donut), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Drone/a/saur, where are you coming from?

heh...i posted upthread as "william (in_bc@canada)",hence vancouver would be the area of departure. contact me at n e r d b a l l @dccnet. com [no spaces] with the pizza joints name please just in case i miss it here.

drone/a/saur (william), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

windwaker and billiard player song need to be retired for awhile.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Cool, William! I'll post the info, once I get it. (for a second, I thought you were someone else flying in from Alaska or something. I've met people who flew from Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks to see shows in Seattle before.)

donut gon' nut (donut), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

too bad steve can't really play "doris."

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 25 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking we meet at Belltown Pizza around 5:30pmish or so? I think William is the only non-Seattle person so far. I talked to Matos tonight, and he's tentatively into joining in for food, although he won't be at the show. I'll see who else I can drum up.

Here's the way to get from Belltown Pizza to the Vera Project. Ignore the actual route, as it's meant for cars... much faster walking there, which would take 10 minutes max at a stroll. Also the Vera Project is a tad west of where the pointer is, but on the same block.. just look for the surly rockers outside, I guess, haha... (I'm sure Belltown Pizza isn't exactly on its green dot either.)

And, William, it's Easy Street records. Here are directions from Easy Street Records (in Lower Queen Anne) to Belltown Pizza. In this case, the driving directions are spot on. Also, many buses will take you from the corner of Mercer St. and Queen Anne Ave N to 3rd Ave. in downtown.. and back to the same spot, except off 1st Ave N. (a block east of QA Ave N.) Just exit from the Lenora, Virginia, or Stewart st. stop around 3rd Ave.. walk east a block and tadah. This entire route's also walkable, though it's bit more of an urban hike.. certainly not impossible though.

Hope this helps!

donut gon' nut (donut), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

thanks donut...i will be the somewhat lost looking white haired fellow with the 'canada' lanyard hanging out of his shorts.

drone/a/saur (william), Friday, 26 August 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

the 'canada' lanyard hanging out of his shorts shorts pocket.

drone/a/saur (william), Friday, 26 August 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHA. I was about to say.. Damn! :)

donut gon' nut (donut), Friday, 26 August 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Last night's show... fantastic. I didn't feel like they missed playing a certain song or anything.. it didn't matter.. this also may have been the first show where there was ZERO chatter during the show.. and I mean ZERO. Vera Project is a strictly all ages place, so no big surprise there as to the relative dearth of chattiness anyway, but even then, there's usually some.. but there was NONE. It kinda provided a very studious yet kinda eerie backdrop to Shellac's set, given the softer and louder moments of their shows. I mean, people laughed during the more humoruous parts, of course, and the applause was as strong as ever. But any show where even Bob says frustratingly, during Q&A, "Goddamnit! You guys are just... so goddamn quiet.. what the hell", something's different.

I'll go more into detail after I let tonight's final show of the tour pass.. as to not provide set list spoilers.

GREAT to meet Bill/drone/a/saur! I highly recommend having a beer with him. Sweetest guy ever. Morley, Matos (during pre-show dinner at least), and another friend named Bill reprazented. Actually Vancouver majorly reprazented during the show, I gather.. a joke was made as to Todd Trainer being offered off for a Sunday day-time date (as Steve and Bob were going to the baseball game here today, and Todd was not, and hence free), and a guy offered "20 Canadian dollars" for a date with Todd. Then a small group of kids up front held up, lo and behold, a $20CAN greenback each.

Anyway, if you love Shellac enough, you slept on getting tickets before, and you don't mind having to wait a small while in line to get day-of tickets today (of which there will be 100, acc. to the Sold Out sign from last night.), GO! Seriously. If tonight's show is as good if not better than last night's, you will be very grateful.

donut gon' nut (donut), Sunday, 28 August 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

about the seattle show:: having never had a chance of seeing albini in any of his bands it was a delight to catch shellac in such a small venue. i thoroughly enjoyed the show! although i have read plenty about the Q&A stuff during their gigs it was entertaining witnessing it in person. obviously these guys enjoy playing together and fed off the crowd.

favourite moment::too many. todd after playing, stepping up to the mic and saying,"let's see scout niblett do that!" was one.

one observation though about todd. not that he lost any momemtum pounding the shit out of his kit,he just did not look real healthy towards the end of the set. i have read rumours of him having a bad back, but never seen it confirmed anywhere. maybe along with the limited time albini and weston have for non recording stuff, the back might explain why they play so little live.he does look like a guy with back problems.

[ just wanted to say 'thanks' to the seattle ilx'ors for the company while in seattle, and thanks to brian for organizing the meet.]

drone/a/saur (william), Sunday, 4 September 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Jay ryan from Dianogah (who did guest vocals on one of the songs) is actually asking if anyone has a recording of "Wingwalker" from the show.. (the "I'm a plane!" song they did.) He said it was the best live performance of the song he ever saw mainly because Steve's improvised story about the guy who ordered parts to make a plane touched a nerve with him and his friends who were watching... It was the highlight of the show IMHO as well.
