Live 8 expands, head hurts

At least mine does.

Geldof, who originally co-ordinated five main concerts in Europe and the US, said he decided to arrange more after the European Union agreed to double its development aid to poorer nations.

He said: "Three weeks ago Europe agreed, unbelievably, to double aid, throwing the ball back to the Yanks, the Japanese and the Canadians.

"So that forced me now to do, which I didn't want to do, a concert in Tokyo, Toronto, which we are announcing tomorrow [Friday] .

I do like the implied threat. "I didn't want to give those Canucks and those Japanese people a concert but BY GOD THEY'RE GETTING ONE. DON'T MAKE ME SCHEDULE MORE."

So, lets get this right, countries that haven't dedicated aid programmes, get a live8 concert?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 16 June 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

I call on America to contribute aid above and beyond its entire GNP for the past hundred years to avert further tragedies.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

.. and Phil Collins hasn't been assigned a venue (yet!). Nor Dire Straits.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 16 June 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Whatever will STATUS QUO do!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 June 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

"Rockin all over the world", most probably.

wtf?

That just strengthens my argument that the Live8 concerts are means of punishing people for not contributing money.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 16 June 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I actually like how the entirety I and probably most of the world that isn't the UK know of Status Quo is them doing that "Rockin' All Over the World" song while I watched the broadcast and thought to my fourteen year old self 'So who the hell are these boring dudes I've never heard of?'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 June 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Although pace Leon's argument, it is clear what Geldof is planning.

"Bush, if you don't kick in, STATUS QUO WILL PLAY."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 June 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I also like how this Berlin lineup now makes less sense:

Roxy Music have joined the bill for the Live 8 concert in Berlin.

They will join Green Day, Tracy Chapman, Brian Wilson, Chris de Burgh and Welsh opera star Katherine Jenkins at the concert at the Brandenburg Gate.

CHRIS DE BURGH! GALE, WHERE ARE YOU!

(Please to ask Dan to explain if Ms. Jenkins is all that.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 June 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, I wonder if the Barenaked Ladies will play the Toronto show?

Huk-L, Thursday, 16 June 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

I would indeed regard that as a threat to all right thinking Canadians.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 June 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I liked that joke on "Have I Got News For You" the other week:

"Good news for all those attending Live 8 in London, Duran Duran will be appearing in Rome"

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

From the BBC article:

"Meanwhile, rockers Status Quo have said they are "desperate" to join the bill at the London gig in Hyde Park."

I bet they are- they'll even provide their own cocaine!

TORONTO (CP) — Canadian Live 8 concert organizers say Toronto is the “logical” place for the historic July 2 event and they have a “spectacular” lineup.
But with two weeks to go exactly who would take part — and the location — were in question as the mechanics of putting together such a massive concert were still being worked out Wednesday.
In fact, a spokesman for World Vision Canada, one of several organizations connected with Bob Geldof’s anti-poverty Live 8 campaign, said an earlier statement that an announcement would come Thursday was premature.
“I think we’re very close to an announcement,” Philip Maher, senior communications manager for World Vision, said late Wednesday afternoon. Earlier in the day, his colleague Sharon Marshall had said an announcement was expected Thursday, that a venue had been secured and “the lineup is spectacular. I can tell you that. And that Canadians will be really proud of it.”
But Maher said concert promoter Michael Cohl, one of the major players behind the 2003 SARS benefit concert, is the one calling the shots.
Cohl represents the Rolling Stones and the group will be practising in Toronto for their upcoming tour, prompting speculation that they would be part of the show.
Billy Talent’s label Warner confirmed that the band had been asked to perform and agreed to the date, but hadn’t heard about a venue yet.
The Barenaked Ladies, Jann Arden and Our Lady Peace* have also come up as possible performers.
Geldof has spearheaded simultaneous concerts in Philadelphia, London, Paris, Rome and Berlin on July 2.
With U2, Mariah Carey, Madonna, Sting and Sarah McLachlan among the performers in those cities, Geldof’s banking on the star-studded event raising awareness of poverty before leaders of the wealthy G-8 countries — which include Canada — meet in Britain July 6-8.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 June 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

The Barenaked Ladies, Jann Arden and Our Lady Peace

See? Punishment and torture! Someone should call Amnesty International on old Bob.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

At this point I can't decide if I've timed my Eurovacation too early or too late.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Poor Toronto.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to a wedding on July 2! In a tent in a field! HA! In your face, Geldof!!

You evil moneygrubbing capitalist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

How much good did the last one actually do? It probably made a ton of money was there evidence it actually did any good to the countries?

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 16 June 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, you've got to be real trustworthy to buy tickets off live-8-tickets.co.uk, the site set up by the touts who got kicked off ebay.

For example:

"2 GOLD CIRCLE TICKETS, EXCLUSIVE VIP FRONT AREA TICKETS.THE TICKETS EVERYONE WOULD REALLY LIKE.!! PAYMENT BY PAYPAL, WILL THEN BE SENT BY ROYAL MAIL SPECIAL DELIVERY THURSDAY ."

Especially enjoying this one, which doesn't even appear to guarantee you entry to the concert proper:

"LIVE 8 LIVE ON SCREEN SAT JULY 2ND 2005, HYDE PARK LONDON, SOUTH SIDE OF HYDE PARK. ENJOY THE FUN AND THE ATMOSPHERE. PAYPAL ONLY... TICKETS TO BE SENT SPECIAL DELIVERY OR ARRANGE NORTH WEST PICKUP. IF PAYING BY PAYPAL MUST BE INSTANT PAYMENT. CANT GO DUE TO TRAVEL PROBLEMS."
