Jason Mraz - C/D?

At one point, I didn't mind this guy very much. I thought he was pleasant.

I grew out of that after a while, but my God, has anyone heard his new single, "Wordplay"? It is a fucking HOWLER. Everyone seriously has to hear it.

He's George Mraz's son, right?

"Wordplay" is very meta. But it seems to early in his career to be so meta. It's like he ran fresh outta ideas, so he went into self-conscious self-parody. Odd.

To = too, obvs.

Justin, Thursday, 16 June 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

There's a song that's more laughable than "The Remedy"?

Well I saw fireworks from the freeway and behind closed eyes I cannot make them go away
Cause you were born on the fourth of july, freedom ring
now something on the surface it stinks
that something on the surface well it kind of makes me nervous who says that you deserve this
and what kind of god would serve this? We will cure this dirty old disease
if you've gots the poison I've gots the remedy

the remedy is the experience. It is a dangerous liaison
I says the comedy is that its serious. Which is a strange enough new play on words
I said the tragedy is how youre gonna spend the rest of your nights with the light on
So shine the light on all of your friends and when it all amounts to nothing in the end.

I wont worry my life away. yeah oh oh
I wont worry my life away. yeah oh oh

I heard two men talking on the radio in a crossfire kind of new reality show
Uncovering the ways to plan the next big attack
well they were counting down the ways to stab the brotha in the be right back after this
the unavoidable kiss, where the minty fresh death breath is sure to outlast this catastrophy
dance with me, because if you've gots the poison, I've gots the remedy

the remedy is the experience. It is a dangerous liaison
I says the comedy is that its serious. Which is a strange enough new play on words
I said the tragedy is how youre gonna spend the rest of your nights with the light on
So shine the light on all of your friends and when it all amounts to nothing in the end.

I wont worry my life away. yeah oh oh
I wont worry my life away. yeah oh oh

When I fall in love I take my time
There's no need to hurry when I'm making up my mind
You can turn off the sun but I'm still gonna shine and I'll tell you why
Because

the remedy is the experience. this is a dangerous liaison
I says the comedy is that its serious. Which is a strange enough new play on words
I said the tragedy is how you're gonna spend the rest of your nights with the light on
So shine the light on all of your friends when it all amounts to nothing in the end.

I wont worry my life away. yeah oh oh
I wont worry my life away. yeah oh oh
I wont and I wont and I wont.......

Hasn't he vanished already and been replaced by the equally irritating Gavin Degraw?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 June 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

I've mentioned this, but "The Remedy" was co-written by the matrix, avril's productino team. Also, if you buy his concert DVD, my ass is featured.

"Wordplay" is very meta. But it seems to early in his career to be so meta.

It's no more meta than most rap songs, which is what Mraz hilariously seems to think it is.

the fact that there is a thread on this twat is embarrassing. close this please.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Friday, 17 June 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

you know, i have HEARD of this guy but i have not actually HEARD his music. i kinda imagine that he's some sort of combo of ryan adams and that "yer body is a wonderland" schmuck?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 17 June 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

He's far closer to John Mayer than Ryan Adams. Not a saddy at all. I think he's wondermous.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 17 June 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

While "The Remedy" is every bit at loathsome as everyone says, there are perhaps 3-4 decent songs on his last album.

(ducks to avoid tomatoes)

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 17 June 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

What intrigues me is that, despite having heard "The Remedy," you went ahead and listened to his album.

I'll holster my tomato down if you'll defend the indefensible.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Friday, 17 June 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

"You and I Both" is a nice choon.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 17 June 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

I heard the album before "The Remedy" became a hit.

From memory: "You And I Both", "On Love, In Sadness" and "Absolutely Zero" were quite nice in a John Mayer-esque style and "Too Much Food" pretty much hits the mark "The Remedy" shot for and missed horribly, but the rest of it was "oh, look at me I'm eclectic but forgot to write any decent tunes, so I'll throw in a reference to pot".

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 17 June 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
They pipe adult contemporary nonsense over the PA at my office building so I had to listen to "Wordplay" for the first time while taking a leak. So now I associate Jason Mraz with expulsion of bodily waste. Which makes sense.

hahaha. Impressed that you managed to avoid this for so long tbh.

Is that actually the album cover because a) awful and b) I'm dying at Del G's cover/leprechaun amateur sketch comparison.

I fucking hate this guy so much. I have to hear like 5 songs of his a day at work.

corey, Friday, 29 April 2011 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

each song would enrage me in fresh new ways... made me feel like alex in nyc... i guess he has a nice voice... thats one thing i could say...

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Friday, 29 April 2011 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

He has a nice voice because he's trying desperately to sound like Stevie Wonder.

Heard some song of his the other day that had a line that went "keeping up with the Joneses/listening to Guns N' Roses" fyad

corey, Friday, 29 April 2011 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

it actually went "i keep up with the joneses while waiting for the guns and the roses"!!!!! http://i.imgur.com/ftQOk.gif

shit from the l.a. coffeehouse open mic night scene is always without exception dire beyond belief, cf shawn mullins.

omar little, Saturday, 30 April 2011 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

Oh god he was at Outside Lands a couple of years back and they broadcast his set on a TV while we were hiding in the wine tent...all the sangria in the world could not quell my hatred. He's so 'wooo its summer all the time dudez lets dance barefoot'...like Jimmy Buffet's margarita vomit made human.

I really, really hate that music so much.

Ah, Mraz. The Panic at the Disco of his era. He and Urie both have that “drama kid made good” vibe.

stillHera, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 02:01 (seven years ago)

four years pass...

Due to my Pops being a fan and buying me a ticket, my first big concert since before the pandemic times was Jason Mraz yesterday, and it was pretty good! He's touring with a 10+ piece band that includes another separate ladyband called Raining Jane as well as a horn section and what appeared to be a full time sitar player

Not super familiar with his material but in addition to a few new ones that are kinda dancey/disco he split time with deep cuts and "the hits", he turned "The Remedy" into a reggae which was an improvement if you can believe it, even had the courtesy to end with "I'm Yours" so I could sneak away and return the rented lawn chairs before the end and mass rush to the exits

Anyways he seems like a pretty chill dude, I get the hostility I guess from when he was inescapable and it's not for everyone but seems fairly innocuous for someone drawing many thousands of middle aged women to the local amphitheater

Florin Cuchares, Saturday, 15 July 2023 04:24 (two years ago)

also apparently he is neighbors with Alan Parsons and even sang on the last Parsons album, which sounds fine but I mostly just enjoy the idea of Jason Mraz and Alan Parsons bumping into each other while checking the mail or whatever and shooting the breeze, hey how's it going Alan Parsons, how are things
