I Love Music?

Reading this mesage board is pretty demoralising. I'm not sure I've found one person saying one positive thing about any one artist. Everyone's a cynic...

David, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

look at the les savy five thread for some happy music-lovin' excitement.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone's a cynic...
You mean saying stuff like "Walkabouts shmalkabouts?" ;)

Seriously, if you're not seeing positive things, you're looking at the wrong threads. There's a ton of gushing praise around the board, but it's balance by people who feel differently.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Likewise, the Darla Bliss Out Thread, the Stereolab Mars Audiac Quintet, the Cornelius thread ... and the archive down below is pretty huge.

Dare, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just not used to so much overwhelming criticism. It was an overstatement to say I hadn't found anything positive. I feel out of my depth here, I guess that's why I like it.

I guess I'll stick around.

David, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cool deal. :-) There's plenty positive and to spare, but sometimes it's buried. Trust me, we have our loves. :-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I LOVE the new Trail of Dead album.

tyler, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not cynical, per se... It's just that everything sucks so bad.

Andy, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sucks so well?

David, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

By the way, how do I post in the other forums. I can only figure out how to post out here in Flanders.

David, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't talk dirty.

Sean, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*drat* my lame joke didn't even get in there in time.

Sean, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

B-b-b-but David, you just left a nasty post in the 4AD thread you uneartherd. Were you being fecesious, or were you just contradicting yrself? Whatever the case, I salute you. (Not sarcasm.) I agree that the Some Napalm record = best 4AD record EVAH!

Andy K, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps reading all the negative, embittered writing on ILM has poisoned him as well....

Sean, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

stick around David, theres plenty here that people love (and yeah, plenty that people hate). i really love Piano Magic, Boards of Canada, Jay-Z, St Etienne, Suede, Autechre, Daft Punk, Nick Drake, Happy Mondays, Kraftwerk, The Seeds, The House Crew, Cocteau Twins.

i really dislike a load of stuff too though, have to be honest (especially if i've spent money on something i don't like!)

gareth, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I LOVE HAYSI FANTAYZEE!!!

I just saw the Strokes at a rehearsal for some MTV thing on this small soundstage and I realized I LOVE THEIR BASS PLAYER!!! He's such a classic rock nerd--dorky haircut framing his dorky babyface, ill-fitting clothes on an It's Pat!-style body, really uncomfortable in his own skin. He looked so great--I take back anything negative or bitchy I ever said about him. He's the real star of the band. I also noticed for the first time how much Julian Casablancas looks like Richard Hell. WHO I LOVE!!!

You know, David, I think a lot of people on this board have gotten used to each other's tastes and writing styles and probably come off as more cynical than they really are because they're trying to amuse their friends. I think.

Arthur, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i wouldn't say the tone's overly negative here (although a bit cynical, yes, but definitely not the same thing, of course), but i would agree that there is something kind of demoralizing about this board. it's all very analytical and dismissive and cold in some respects, even when it's usually clearly coming from a place of fandom and love. for a year or so i tried to kind of stay away from places that made me think on those terms, i was just very over the rock crit thing for a while, and this place sucked me back into it, although i get the feeling that a lot of people here are also over all that in the same way, and so this place is kind of a reaction to that as well...if that makes

al, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

shut yer traps! we just allll love to rock out and jabber about it!

chiznaki, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think a lot of people on these boards love a lot of music and there are plenty of positive posts. The board name is a bit of a misnomer though since there is enough hate (of bands, genres, writers, etc) on a lot of these threads to fill Tanya's column for the next five years. The board should really be called "I Love to Talk About Music." Perfect, huh.

Alex, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think 'I Love Music' is a fair enough title, i mean, i love music, thats why i deem it worth any of my attention, thats why i enjoy talking about it here, and in other places.

for me, i generally don't find the tone too analytical or anything, but i am aware that some people do think this about here, and argue that it 'destroys the mystery'. i can understand this view, but for me it just hasn't happened this way. i wonder if the sound and the image are perceieved as mystery, while the written word is seen as explanatory, as de-mystifying music. for me though, i am interested in thinking, seeing other views, discussion etc etc. it hasn't taken any mystery away because the music i like is able to withstand anything like that (and the stuff that isn't? well...!)

i think the best thing is to use I Love Music in the way you see fit, which will be different from person to person, often it is enough to know there are other people out there who like something you like! but the best thing is you can add to things, you can improve the board, talk about things you want, it is participatory...

gareth, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

why should we have to justify ourselves? the work is there, it's in the threads already (dozens...hundreds of them, proof enough)...you have to go looking for it. the mountain ain't comin to mohammad blah blah...

jess, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

check out any of the we love faggot music where you'll find glorious praise of buttmucnhers galore

goeff, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i love music . i also hate music . but mudic is pretty much always in my life.

anthony, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Top ILM fact! We called it I Love Music cos there was an I Hate Music on Freaky Trigger already and the two named looked good together on the front page. There is a lot of negativity on the forum. Some of it is unneccessary - it's easier and quicker to say something cheap and nasty than to make a case - some of it is not, a lot of it is funny.

Tom, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a tough love, isn't it? We demand a lot from music - if that means a bit more cracking of the whip than what some folks might deem proper, well, then, whatever. This is just how we express our love. It's no less pure, no less special. We're just as quick to offer excessive praise as we are to dash things we loathe on the rocks.

In other words, what they said.

sixteen years pass...

am i crazy or is it January 3 and only two rolling threads (Afro-etc. and Outernational) have been established?

or are they all hiding out under funny in-joke names or something?

alpine static, Thursday, 3 January 2019 08:51 (six years ago)

We also have to sort out our tangled web of avant-pop. I'm not kow-towing to the vaporwave massive again

imago, Thursday, 3 January 2019 09:25 (six years ago)

There is a lot of negativity on the forum. Some of it is unneccessary - it's easier and quicker to say something cheap and nasty than to make a case - some of it is not, a lot of it is funny.

All still true today!

Folks usually defer to whomever started last year’s threads to start this year ‘s . So the r’n’b one and country one will hopefully start soon.
