It seems like it's letting up here in midtown.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 June 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

...and I actually do like this song.

We must be blocks from one another.

Regarding that Supertramp song, hardly the best thing they did. That would be much earlier than 1982.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 16 June 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

Stick with Breakfast in Ameirca and maybe select moments of Live in Paris. Destroy everything else.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 June 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

I say "It's Raining Again" = very classic and it is one of the best things they did...

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 16 June 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

PAPPA WHEELIE DO YOU WORK AT VH1 CLASSIX CUZ THEY ARE PLAYING SUPERTRAMP'S "IT'S RAINING AGAIN" AND THAT IS JUST TOO UNCANNY I'MA CALLING YOU OUT

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 17 June 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Stick with "Crime Of The Century", and maybe select moments from their first two albums, and even fewer select moments from their next two albums after "Crime...." Destroy the later AOR stuff.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 17 June 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

What Joe said, pretty much. The production is a bit weedy, and I could do without the children's choir, but that bridge where they stretch out on the words "fill your heart again" makes the song for me. Nice.

Deluxe (Damian), Friday, 17 June 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Haven't heard it for years, but I recall it was the only decent song from the dismal (but prophetically titled) Famous Last Words LP. A nice jangly tune that (inexplicably) reminds me The Cult's "Revolution". That song, plus Breakfast and maybe a half-dozen odd '74-77 tracks and you're set for life, Supertramp-wise.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 17 June 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

It's a love song, Classic.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Friday, 17 June 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Never like the "come on you little fighter/no need to get uptighter" couplet but still a good song.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 17 June 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

Starts out strong, and then hits the fucking skids with "no need to get uptighter" and that children's chorus.

mike a, Friday, 17 June 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Massive classic, but heart-wrenchingly lame at the same time. Requires skipping (as in the way one moves down the street, not elision).

JAMES BLOUNT THAT IS A TOTAL COINCIDENCE I POSTED IT BECAUSE IT WAS RAINING AT THE TIME AND I HAVEN'T CHECKED THIS THREAD SINCE I AND ALEX TRADED RAIN SOTRIES AND I'M REVIVING IT NOW BECAUSE IT'S RAINING AGAIN AND IT'S EXPECTED THAT GIER TOOK THE QUESTION SERIOUS AND IT'S COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT I DO NOT WORK FOR VH1 CLASSIC THAT INSTEAD I WORK FOR THE STANDARD OLD CELEBRITY GOSSIP REAL VH1 WHICH I DON'T MID SHARING AGAIN BECAUSE IT'S IN THE ARCHIVES ANYWAY I'VE ACTUALLY ONLY EVER SEEN VH1 CLASSIC ONCE IN MY LIFE WHICH WAS 3 YEARS AGO BECAUSE STANDARD VH1 DOESN'T PAY ME ENOUGH TO AFFORD CABLE.

Thanks.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

So what you're saying is...

I remember when this song was a hit and liked it v. much, it was the only Supertramp song I was conscious of as being top 40 currency as opposed to something I heard years later in retrospect. (See also F. Mac's Mirage singles vs. all that had gone before.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Actually Ned, I forgot it was Supertramp until recently. I always think of the hits from Breakfast in America when I think Supertramp.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Cannot frankly stand the Supertramp vocal or production styles nor the nursery-rhyminess of the melody of this song.

Nevertheless a cool medley might run:

"Have You Ever Seen the Rain" / "Here Comes the Rain Again" / "It's Raining Again" / "Who'll Stop the Rain."

The Mad Puffin, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

New Edition's Can You Stand the Rain does rate high with me though...even if only in nostalgia.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

so nobody else likes "even in the quietest moments"? wow.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Classic. Is the group singing harmonies or is Hodgson's voice double-/multitracked? Is there any reason why the "little fighter" part made me think of ABBA?

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

You'd destroy Crime of the Century, Alex?

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

"It's Raining Again," hallelujah, "It's Raining Again," amen...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Is the group singing harmonies or is Hodgson's voice double-/multitracked?

It's Hodgson's voice double-tracked. I agree the children's chorus has got to go, but the sax solo is pretty great.
