What's your favorite record store in the town you live in? And how do I get in touch with them! I need some good local independent record stores in the U.S. (or elsewhere) for future refference on where to sell/buy records while I'm on tour and where to distribute my label's shit.

Milwaukee's is Atomic Records (http://www.atomic-records.com)

I haven't found a BRILLIANT record store in Sydney, but I always go to Egg Records and Lawson's on Pitt Street, they have a dece range and the prices are never crazy.

Anyone know any awesome ones? I'm probably going to be in the city tonight, looking for a good buy.

NYC:
Jeez, i don't know if I even have a "favorite" one anymore. Depends what I'm after at the time, really. If I had to choose one, though, maybe it'd be NYCD on the Upper West Side....or possibly Rocks in You Head down in Soho. For indie esoterica and archival re-release stuff, I hit Other Music and/or Mondo Kim's. For imports, I used to goto Rebel Rebel, Record Runner or Route 66 (which is gone). For workaday hardcore/punk/metal etc., I'd go to Generation Records on Thompson St., and I go out of my way not to get anything at Bleeker Bob's, because Bob is a king-sized cock. There are still a bunch of cool little places, but there used to be many, many more.

Detroit..

depends on the genre,

personally I like the vibe and selection of Car City Records

and Windy and Carl's Stormy Records (its nice and close)

for CDs, its a whole 'nuther story (probably Wazoo in Ann Arbor)

DC's kind of dead in that regard, but in B-more you've got lots of good choices, particularly True Vine and Once.Twice:Sound. There's also the Soundgarden, which is the good bigger store.

I just moved out of Bmore.. you should check out Joe's Record Paradise, the selection is good, but the prices are wonderful. And I agree, DC is horrible for records/CDs...

nothingleft (nothingleft), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

yeah, Joe's is totally worthwhile too. I'm glad to see they weathered their RIAAd without too much trouble. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention CDepot in College Park - particularly if you're interested in selling stuff.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Windsor - Dr.Disc: though being, really, the ONLY store in town, it is improving monthly, to the point of finding something interesting everytime I go in (as opposed to once every two years, back about five years ago)

Detroit area - I say Stormy (Dearborn), for effort and energy, and decent-to-great in-store shows. CarCity back in the day, but they're just going through the motions, and have been for the last several years (or since they got rid of the room nextdoor). In AnnArbor, #1 is easily Encore, where I ALWAYS find rare and hard to get things used, and for the mounds of new stock that's sitting on the counter, waiting to go out.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Westfield, NJ: Sound Station (908) 654-4110.

Almost no indie bullshit, but lots of old soul/R&B, a great jazz section, and lots of metal. I went to high school with the owner (he's a couple of years younger than me).

Atomic Records is fine if you like indie, but last time I checked it was shit for jazz and hip-hop. I like the Farwell and Brookfield Exclusive Co.'s much better.

I like Rocks In yer head in new york. I miss route 66 a little bit. they used to call when imports would come in, and i'd have them a few days before anyone else. I also have to give it up a little for JNR. A really broad--and odd--selection of things, and often at a good price.

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Friday, 17 June 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

hey used to call when imports would come in, and i'd have them a few days before anyone else.

Yeah, Andy was a real prize about that. I ran into him in London a year or two back -- he seems a little worse for wear (nervous breakdown?) I do miss that store, though (which briefly employed Daniel from Interpol behind the register).

"Crazyman Records" around the corner can be great too for unexpected vinyl gems.

Richmond, Va. has a pretty good store called Plan 9. Basement with used vinyl is excellent (incidentally, the other day they told me DJ Shadow spent several hours there six months ago), the rest of the store is good but not great.

Chicago: Dave's and Hi-Fi on Clark are great for when you've gotta have it on vinyl. Mostly rock, but Hi Fi has a decent little collection of reggae, too. ('m curious about Deadwax on Ashland. Anybody been there?
Madison, WI: B-Side rules for cds, but Mad City has the vinyl and a really cool all 60's psych/garage section. Back in the day, Plush on State St. was also a decent place to blow your plasma check.

Bren (Bren), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

NYC:

For LPs, the Academy Annex in Williamsburg and Eat Records in Greepoint are great. In Manhattan, Academy 10th Street and Gimme Gimme are good.

For CDs, either Other Music or Kim's. Decent selection at both. I prefer Kim's--it's larger and I think the selection is a bit better, in terms of vinyl especially.

I feel like we have a thread about this every week.

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

The best record store in NYC is Gimmee Gimmee records, you fools.

MY favorite thing about other music is when a "featured" album cover in their window is matched by the same album cover across the street at tower records. I always imagine it making the hipsters really really mad, ha ha ha!

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Scotti's

Morristown and Summit, New Jersey

God I hate Scotti's. It's overpriced and the selection is terrible. I just get frustrated in there. However, it is the best record store in my town and I go once a week. What can I say.

I can't believe this store got a mention though anyway!

When in Wethersfield, CT go to Integrity 'n Music. If it still exists. It's been a while.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

I split my time between two cities, so:

In my beloved hometown of Newcastle on Tyne (England, yo), there are a couple of awesome ones... The obvious answer is probably Steel Wheels, which makes rockists everywhere come in their pants with a staggeringly complete selection of Marillion records in between old vinyl galore. RPM Records, though, is my favourite both for the selection of funk, hip-hop and assorted hipster shit as well as because it completely owns Steel Wheels' ass in terms of supporting the local scene (Steel Wheels, in an example of missing the boat spectacularly, didn't stock the first couple of Maximo Park singles and I've never seen any Futureheads release of any kind in there).

I currently live in Nottingham, where there's only really one answer... Selectadisc. ..was is good for grabbing promos of semi-obscure 'should've been huge' indie (theaudience) and pop (Mania), but Selectadisc has just about everything else under the sun.

You know Au Go Go has closed down? And apparently Gaslight might be selling up. Raoul Recods in St. Kilda as well...

Missing Link is still doing well though! And you can find some amazing obscure vinyl at Liquorice Pie in Parahan, Northside, and Funk's record bar in Collingwood.

does anyone know any good stores in memphis? I live in rural mississippi (with the wal-mart being the only place that sells any music), so i have to order online or drive to memphis (where i've been to shangri-la records with is ok for old vinyl, but do not know much else in the area)

fffnnnsss, Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

fffnnnsss, Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Twisted Village in Cambridge, for all the reasons detailed on the other thread. I really miss Other Music, Hifi Records, Smash City, Record Hog. Newbury's really the only game in town for a lot of things these days.

I don't go back home that often, but Syracuse used to have a few good-to-fantastic record stores - Oliver's, Record Theatre, and the immortal Knuckleheads - all of which closed in the past five or six years. Right now there's only Sound Garden, as far as I know.

williamstown mass: i dunno if it's still there but there used to be a place called toonerville trolley records that had the absolute spankin'-best used/new vinyl selection i've ever seen. everything good wasn't out on display (williams kids buy hootie), you had to ask hal the owner to take a look through the stuff. sealed "hex enduction hour," hell, practically all of the fall's early 80s stuff either sealed or mint. tons of fahey. tons of punk and hardcore. sooooo good. i hope it's still there.

(not because it's terrible, mind you - they've got a pretty decent selection and the owner is super-friendly and a very knowledgeable guy and will order anything for you if you can't find it (within reason) - but because i didn't think the best record store within a five-mile radius from my house would even get a mention here)

My Mind's Eye in Lakewood, OH, just outside of Cleveland, is excellent for reissues and used vinyl/CDs, and the owner Charles is a diamond geezer.

You live in Lakewood? Me too (well, for 21 years until last year...).

I bought Pere Ubu's The Modern Dance at My Mind's Eye, I asked Charles if the guys in the band still lived around Cleveland...he ran down the list of members, calling everyone "Mr. Thomas," "Mr. Herman," etc. Cool guy; super nice.

But Cleveland is surely a black hole when it comes to record stores. My Generation was great, but now that's gone; Platter Puss was okay, but that's history. And don't get me started on Bent Crayon....cd cases not stocked spine-up in the display cases, very high priced, no cheap or used bins, very niche, and the sap behind the counter has to be the least friendly neighborhood store owner I've ever come across.

Was it ever better than what it is today in Cleve?

PB, Monday, 20 June 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

I just came back from Zion's Gate (Dub, Dancehall, techno, metal), Platinum (Dance/DJ - I know the staff there is really macho, I know.), and Jive Time (vintage, collector, all 'round stuff).. the latter of which killed me, financially.. but now I have a record by The Beatle Barkers (which didn't cost much at all), which was this Aussie Beatles cover band where the songs are sung in dog barks! My life is now complete.

For Chicagoans: I went to the Dr. Wax on Berwyn today to get a Father's Day present for my dad (the Luaka Bop West Africa comp.) -- and I noticed that they had a HUGE section devoted to Kompakt. Seriously: like multiple copies of M. Mayer's Immer (which I picked up), Touch, Superpitcher's Here Comes Love, Justus Koehncke's Doppelleben, Triple R's Friends, all of the Pop Ambients, several Speichers, etc.

You live in Lakewood? Me too (well, for 21 years until last year...).

Lived there from 1994-2002. That was quite enough.

When I first moved to the area, a store called Wax Stax was quality and a great musician/human being named Scott Pickering worked there and knew about tons of good music.

John at Bent Crayon gave me loads of great suggestions about records every week for 7 years. But first you have to earn his respect. Which admittedly is not the best way to run a business, but, hey, it's his steez, for better or worse. His demeanor has cost him lots of business, from what I've gathered.

Socially-inept unfriendly record store owners -- gotta love 'em. They've carved out quite a nice niche for themselves. No wonder they keep going under.

PB, Monday, 20 June 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I used to live in Ann Arbor and agree about Wazoo and Encore being wonderful. However, I live four hours from any real (i.e. not a Sam Goody) record store. The best nearby one would have to be the Exclusive Company in Appleton WI, which is bigger than the one in Green Bay.

Both are pretty decent, though, despite making you pay a quarter or fifty cents more for CDs if you use a credit card and filing stuff that's on independent labels separately from majors which makes it hard to find things sometimes.

The unfortunate thing about John/Bent Crayon is that he's singlehandedly built one of the best indie stores in the country (and certainly the best between NY and Chicago) but whenever he gets a mention it's appended to some (usually third- or fourth-hand) story of a perceived slight at the front counter. He deserves some credit for what he's built.

PB, your experience was first-hand, so vote counted. But I think 'socially inept' is a bit harsh. And re: 'going under', he's completely outgrown his existing floor space.

Segal OTM re: Wax Stacks -- great store, still sorely missed.

Not that anybody who reads ILM will actually be in Charlotte, NC...

I will be!... (but, well just at the airport for a layover a couple of times in early August on my way to Chapel Hill and back.)

donut e-goo (donut), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

kompakt stuff was always readily available in chicago. most of the stuff i have is from when i lived there, with a couple of exceptions (things i found in iowa city).

i wasn't impressed by any charlotte stores but i can't remember the names of the ones i went to.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Are there any good record stores in Chapel Hill/Carrboro/etc. besides CD Alley?

donut e-goo (donut), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

there was another one but damn i can't remember the name, it was 2 years ago i was last there. schoolkids maybe?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I'll look it up! (I'm in Chapel Hill Aug 3rd to 5th, to see the lone Tall Dwarfs show -- i.e. minus OTS -- there... yes, this is before I found out about the possible SF show on Aug 9th, but I already Orbitz-ed my way to Raleigh/Durham Airport for cheap, so what the hey.)

Yeah, maybe a little harsh. But considering the amount of money I poured into that store the summers I was home from college...it just irked me that all attempts at conversation led nowhere and it took months before I heard anything other than the amount I owed him. Not that I have some need to strike up deep friendships with record store clerks, but you know what I mean.

Re: the success of the store, I didn't know it was doing so well, but I'm glad to hear at least one business in Cleveland is going belly up. Hopefully he'll be able to expand both the store space and selection.

*isn't

PB, Monday, 20 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

john's always been extremely nice to me. there was one guy, though, who worked there briefly years ago that i almost throttled. as i was browsing the shelves one day, he yelled over to me that "we don't have the julie ruin album in yet."

wtf.

i said something like "that's good, because i don't want to buy it," and left with my planned purchase of the dirtbombs' horndog fest. the entire drive home i was imagining that dipshit's face on a dartboard.

I used to be really skeptical about Amoeba's presence in California, and knowledge of presence on the west coast, as I feared its existence was very dangerous to great, smaller independent stores.. (which, as it turns out, is true and not true depending on the store.)

But now that I hear stories like Lauren's, I'm thinking Amoeba is a good thing, as it pretty much has scared most independent west coast record store staff into being very polite and affable.

donut e-goo (donut), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

I mean, if Amoeba L.A. had opened while N* L*f* records was alive and well in the mid 90s, they would have been D.O.A. within a week. (Then again, I've been the only one unlucky enough to have the worst ever record store staff experiences at N* L*f*)

donut e-goo (donut), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

i don't care if clerks don't want to chat or even exchange pleasantries beyond "thank you/you're welcome," but there's no excuse for going out of your way to be a dick to someone who hasn't said a word to you. fortunately, that's the only incidence i can think of in years of shopping at independent stores.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

This is actually a good idea for another thread.

donut e-goo (donut), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

yep, Chapel Hill = School Kids

Will(iam), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

hstencil, I'm sure you could find Kompakt stuff if you knew where to look -- I mean, I bought the new Superpitcher at Hard Boiled -- but I was just impressed that there was such a teeming section at a place like Dr. Wax, which isn't a specialty store. I think the guy who runs it is a dahnce/electronic sort of dude. (As opposed to the Evanston Dr. Wax, which is pretty straight-up indie rock, IIRC.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

For Athens, Georgia, I'd probably say Low Yo-Yo, though it has weird hours and is very cramped. We have a Schoolkids of our own, and it's okay, and we have Wuxtry, which makes me crazy with never having what I'm looking for.

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

most of the dr wax's and second hand tunes have somewhat decent dance selections. you kinda have to to survive as a store in chicago.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Chapel Hill: I've always had much better luck at Nice Price than at Schoolkids, but CD Alley is definitely your first stop.
