Can we show some love for Annie Nightingale?

I think she's one of the greats of British broadcasting and sadly neglected. Maybe not doing the wry tv voiceovers or riding the tabloid/Hello roller coaster has led to her low profile. Anyway after 36 years at wunnerful radio one, she's still sounding more vital than ever, despite slugging away at the unholy hour of one a.m on Friday mornings.

Just listen to her and you'll see what I mean...

Yay for Annie.

I played against her on a 'popfans vs celebs' popquiz TV show. (Teams of three). The other 2 celebs being Keith Skues (Radio Hallam MD) and Sally James. Annie was dead chatty, Keith was friendly too, Sally was a bit distant.

Annie was another DJ who Radio 1 will never try to replace, i.e. she played stuff she and her listeners wanted to hear and was resolutely off-message. Yay Annie, you Rawk.

Is, mate. Is.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 June 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

She's not still on Radio 1 is she? (was what I meant)

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Friday, 17 June 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

yeah .. agreed .. she was a vital part of my formative years .. and still plays great stuff.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 17 June 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

Not sure why, but Brighton has a bus named after her:

NickB (NickB), Friday, 17 June 2005 08:59 (twenty years ago)

That's Norman's doing, I believe.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 June 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Go Norman. Stick that up yer kazoo, Chris fookin Moyles.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 17 June 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

Let's not forget her stint on OGWT. Remember The Damned.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 17 June 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

I remember PIL.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 June 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

I remember Mark Ellen and/or David Hepworth co-presenting OGWT with her. Yeucch.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 17 June 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

I still miss her Sunday night request show. Laura had three requests read out by Our Annie over the years...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 17 June 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure Moyles will get a toilet named after him eventually.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Friday, 17 June 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

Sorry but no. Getting hammered with Robbie Gillepsie, 'Echo Beach', The Cure, female Tommy Vance delivery – 'cool' I suppose if youre the sort of person who thinks Des Lynam's 'cool'.

wtin, Friday, 17 June 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

Hey, everyone, it's Chris Moyles!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 17 June 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

I didn't think he could write. Do you think he got one of his lackeys to do it?

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Friday, 17 June 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

And on what planet is "female Tommy Vance delivery" not cool?

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Friday, 17 June 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

I suppose she could always take over Tommy's voiceover job on Dickhead Drivers or whatever that Channel 5 programme was called.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 17 June 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

I miss Tommy. Now I've made myself sad :(

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Friday, 17 June 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

Pains me to state the obvious but Moyles is a fuckwit. Sorry, I don't like Annie. I loved PiL doing Careering on OGWT but don't see why that means I have to like the woman who introduced them. As there was with Tommy, there's the whiff of the opportunist about her. Tommy was a reggae DJ before he saw playing Metal would get him more work. Annie sounds like she'd play any old shite just as long as it gets her backstage at the Brighton Death in Vegas gig.

wtin, Friday, 17 June 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

Of course, it could be Mary Anne Hobbs...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

"I loved PiL doing Careering on OGWT but don't see why that means I have to like the woman who introduced them."

I'd have thought simply the fact that she wasn't Bob Harris was enough to make anyoone like her at that precise instant.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Wow. I thought I was the only person who, when thinking about Annie Nightingale, automatically thinks of PiL doing "Careering" on OGWT.

She got a lot better after she got into Ian Dury and stopped playing "All Right Now" every other week, didn't she?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

.. or asking Paul Simon how different was it writing songs on his own as opposed to with Art?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Paul: "I wrote all the songs on my own!"
Annie: "Oh. Um, is this widely known?"
Paul: "Guess not."

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Didn't AN have some kind of horrible accident a few yrs back?

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 17 June 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

She was a bit all over The Police circa Regatta De Blanc (actually pretty much their entire career, now I think about it), but for the back-announcement after The Damned had just trashed their equipment on OGWT (I Just Can't Be Happy Today) she'll forever have a place in my heart.
She played my requests a few times on the sunday afternoon show (I used to enter the Daisy Chain competition on a regular basis too!). It was mostly Lene Lovich and Madness, I think.

harvey.w (harvey.w), Friday, 17 June 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Not sure why, but Brighton has a bus named after her:

She's much more worthy of having a Brighton bus named after her than some of the talentless hacks they have put on the front (Lynham, I'm looking at you).

I can't say I purposefully listen to her current show, but whenever I have - it has been perfect.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 17 June 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Remember her Sunday show in the 70s really well - loads of classic new wave cheese and a fair amount of punk. At that point, late night reception for Peel was poor-to-unlistenable in my part of suburban Edinburgh, so I heard a lot of great stuff from her first.

Soukesian, Friday, 17 June 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

She was a bit all over The Police circa Regatta De Blanc (actually pretty much their entire career, now I think about it)

Isnt that her on the back cover of Zenyatta Mondatta? Stood with an umbrella IIRC...

nashwan, Friday, 10 July 2015 14:06 (ten years ago)

I'm kind of intrigued by how that all hangs together.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 July 2015 14:08 (ten years ago)

Three tracks that always remind me of Annie:

1) "Win a night out with a famous Paranoiac" - Barry Andrews
2) "Is that all there is?" - Cristina
3) "Spiritual high" - Moodswings/Chrissie Hynde

Mostly because these were hard-to-find records that people could only hear if they requested them from Annie.

And let's not forget "Panic" by The Sidebottoms, obv.

I think Big Hard Excellent Fish 'Imperfect List' is the track that reminds me of Annie.

I admire Annie's commitment and dedication to prioritising having a good time on all possible occasions.

Dr Drudge (Bob Six), Friday, 12 January 2024 15:47 (two years ago)

I have a tape of her Sunday night request show from around 1991 which I used to listen to - in half an hour she managed to introduce me to:

Robert Wyatt (Matching Mole's "O Caroline)
Todd Rundgren (Utopia's "Communion With The Sun")
The Beach Boys ("Heroes & Villains:)

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 12 January 2024 16:07 (two years ago)

Same here, I loved the whole 'Hannah from Chichester is stuck indoors studying for her mocks and would like to hear Pearly Dewdrops Drops' format
