Melvins, no contest

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I agree.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 17 June 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Kyuss has better songs than the Melvins, but their jokes aren't as funny.

I've yet to buy an Electric Wizard album, but it'd have to be pretty damn amazing to top Sleep's "Dopesmoker".

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 17 June 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Dopethrone > Dopesmoker in my humble opinion. I also think Holy Mountain > Dopesmoker.

Pappawheelie bumps it, but does not chime in with his own opinion?

Stoner Guy, Friday, 17 June 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

sleep no contest. melvins? c'mon, thats like a bad joke thats been running 20 years too long. kyuss? uh. electric wizard? a few good riffs and a cool phaser does not a band make. (actually that makes alot of bands, but oh well)

deru, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Everyone keeps talking about Melvins as "funny" or "joking" and just now "a bad joke." I admit I can't understand much of their lyrics, but I've never really found them to be humorous. Just extremely cool. Maybe sort of inappropriate or unexpected in places or parts of songs, but not really funny. There is certainly nothing "bad" about them. How could anyone put down that band who likes Sleep?! The way the Melvins write songs with various slight riff changes and general lack of build-up/chorus is what later became Stoner Rock.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

Okay, "Electroretard" is a funny title.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

and doing Kiss-style solo albums was pretty funny. I've always detected a sorta smartass "fuck you" undercurrent to most of the Melvins stuff. I'm not putting down the Melvins - they're great! But Kyuss are GREATERER.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

I never bought those solo records. I figured they'd probably be about as good as the original Kiss solo records (not very). Besides the covers, was the music funny?

Stoner Guy, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

not really, but I mean just the fact that they would pull such a stunt at all is a humorous thing. And seeing them live, they're whole confrontational "we're going to play sooooooooooooooooo sloooooooow it's gonna annoy you whadareyagonnado about it?" always elicited a few chuckles to me. It didn't seem to have the seriousness that someone like, say, Sunnnn 0)))) bring to playing slow.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

TV Guide does that Kiss cover thing all the time. No music, though.

I thought playing slow was what stoner rock is all about.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Melvins ease past Sleep in the final. I've only just thought about this now, but I kind of really appreciate the fact that I don't know anything about the Melvins' drug habits, which couldn't exactly be said for the other candidates

exjunkies, but the solo kiss recs are pretty vital, esp k buzzo's

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Saturday, 18 June 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

Which of the Melvins solo records has the 20-something minute drone/doom-esque track at the end? I know it wasn't Buzzo -- was it Joe Preston? I never much cared for the "solo" trilogy, but that track (from what I remember) was the SHIT.

ilxor, Monday, 16 February 2009 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

Melvins influenced and own the other 3. Unquestionable.

Nate Carson, Monday, 16 February 2009 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

I know it wasn't Buzzo -- was it Joe Preston?
