Picked it up yesterday. Thumbed through it briefly. Put it down again. Bought The Rock Snob*s Dictionary by David Kamp and Steven Daly instead.

How's The Rock Snob*s so far?

Yeah, I've read it. There are some nice passages in it. The chapters about a girl he knew who died young (and is immortalized in a famous song) were poignant. I can't say I was blown away by the book, though.

The Rock Snob*s Dictionary by David Kamp and Steven Daly is terrible -- a poorly written, glorified gift book with ZERO content.

Not nearly as funny as I was hoping it would be. Moreover, Rock Snobbery is a pretty easy target -- they should've been able to do better than this.

They strive for a McSweeny's level of humor.....and, so far, are failing.

is the rock snob thing just a compendium of those lame vanity fair pieces?

It's the same format, and I recognized some of the entries, but I don't really know if it's just a compilation or if it has some new stuff.

The truly horrific thing about the book (aside from it's deep cynicism about why people like what they like) is the set of lists they include, like the essential rock books, and the rock snob hall of fame, or whatever they call it. The lists are totally batshit insane, IMO. Though now I can't remember exactly what's on them.
