I was worried about this last summer when I split up from my wife (now ex) of 23 years. There was a lot of music I love that was very strongly associated with her or with times together. I thought it might be ruined for me, but thankfully it hasn't been at all.

Well I used to have a gf who would make me listen to Tool while we were doing it. Of course, now she lives with one of the guys in Tool so it's even harder for me to appreciate them.

tori amos & most lilith fair type stuff -- first serious gf was really into this stuff and i can't listen to any of it now without thinking of her. today she seems really nice and normal, married with 3 (4? idk) kids but she was really nuts and really religious at the time and really messed me up and ruined me for god and earnest girlrock. now i totally seethe whenever any of this stuff comes on and recently freaked out my current gf by going on a vicious rant about the screamingly 90s back-patting essentially non-threatening feminist posturing
ani difranco does not count

can't listen to Pink Floyd's 'Momentary Lapse of Reason' because of a douchey boyfriend I had when I was 16. Though now I'm thinking he may have done me a favor.

my girlfriend doesn't listen to music, she's a dancer so to her just sitting and listening to something alone doesn't make much sense. it's a good thing since i avoid being subject to her potentially bad tastes. but it's sort of a bad thing whenever i make her a mixtape and i know she probably won't listen to it more than once, or when i chew her ear off about a mindblowing concert or album i went to and she can't relate.

Sentinel Beast! Mr Vegemite has introduced me to a lot of great stuff...he got me into Iron Maiden, introduced me to Mercyful Fate, Venom, the hilarity that is Manowar..and 99% of the time, I love it. But that Sentinel Beast CD? UGH. No other word for it than godawful. Sounds like it was recorded through a metal tube. (It wasn't helped by the fact that I was sleeping the first time he cranked it on the stereo.Waking someone up to that is not the best way to engender any kind of love for their musical stylings.)
