PRESTO Through VAPOR TRAILS

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

i think vapor trails is genius, except for the first track.
counterparts is great.
the rest, haven't heard 'em.

Grell (Grell), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

I think the last Rush album I bought when it was new release was Grace Under Pressure, which was great (but doesn't count here, I guess). I was briefly tempted to get Roll the Bones, as I saw them on that tour, but the "rap" on the title track convinced me otherwise.

I did buy the live album, Different Stages, which -- in retrospect -- was and remains entirely needless in the wake of Exit...Stage Left.

I listened to Presto again recently and I have to say I think it's pretty solid. Roll the Bones and Counterparts didn't leave much of an impression on me when they came out (except "Dreamline" off of RTB) and I haven't checked anything else out since.

"Chain Lightning" on PRESTO has a monster riff.

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't Presto '89? This is important in that they haven't written a decent song since then ("Show Don't Tell"). I went to the Presto tour. It was cool yet disappointing as I was expecting my mind to be blown (I was 15).

mcd (mcd), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Presto's from 1989, but whatevs. I think it was the last really good Rush LP, but Counterparts had some high spots. Most everything else has been dire.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

"Counterparts" was really well produced. Bunch of real solid tracks on that one. (Animate, Double Agent, Between Sun And Moon, Cut To The Chase)

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

The rap on Roll the Bones is one of the most roffle bits of music evah.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

The whole song is, for that matter.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

where is the love for vapor trails?

Grell (Grell), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

No man is an island, Grell. I'm sure someone else somewhere likes it.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

IT'S A PARALAX, YA DIG? THE SMALL GETS BIG!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

I went to the Presto tour.

Let me add to this that MR. BIG opened. When's the last time you heard mention of that band!?!? I think it was on the first track of their album, "Addicted to that Rush" where BILLY SHEEHAN DOUBLED THE GUITAR SOLO ON BASS. wtf.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I saw them on the Roll the Bones tour with Primus opening, and again on the Counterparts tour with *gulp* Candlebox opening.

Mr. Big were lame.

haha me too! Remember when Billy Sheehan played the bass with a power drill that had all these guitar picks on the end?

The show I saw, Geddy and Alex even came out and jammed with Mr. Big on a cover of "Wipeout"...yuck.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 17 June 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Wait, were you at Brendan Byrne Arena? Or maybe they did this on all the stops along that tour?

mcd (mcd), Friday, 17 June 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

bump

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Friday, 17 June 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

I still think Vapor Trails is very good for a hard rock album, maybe more so than I thought here. "Nocturne" and "Fear" are great. It's almost uplifting at times. The guitars sound great and Geddy Lee does a lot with his voice. I don't know their other albums from this period though. I'll say "Ghost of a Chance" has a guitar solo on par with any in Lifeson's back catalogue. I think it puts the lie to the claim that Rush can be coldly technical. It's too bad that didn't become a hit instead of "Roll the Bones" or "Nobody's Hero".

Sundar (sundar), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

That's "Nocturne" and "Freeze" (part IV of "Fear").

Sundar (sundar), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Nope the Met Center (RIP) in Bloomington, MN...it seemed like canned spontenaity at the time, even to my unjaded tween eyes.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Did Mr Big do "To Be With You"? Or was that Mr Mister?
