So, on Vicodin, lying down with headphones on, http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000IXS0.01._PE25_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg is the best aural experience I can ever remember. It was like being awake and dreaming at the same time. I was walking through these caves and swampy forests and for awhile I was just watching colors. I think it must have been very close to what being on heroin is like.
There were times I've listened to things on acid/booze/week/coke and it sounded good, but I don't have a clue what it really sounded like.

That happened to me 2 or 3 times when I was about 8 years old, minus the drugs. Just watching the tv, in some state between asleep and awake, and my POV would rise to the ceiling and wander around, looking down. Awesome, but for some reason I never wanted to tell friends or family about it.

I had to find that song.
And this was Before Teh Internets, so finding it was not going to be easy, since all I remembered was the chorus and that it was beyond gorgeous and filled your body with pure oceanic joy and expressed in chords the lovestalgia I felt for everyone I was about to lose that Senior Week.
And I wouldn't have, except that I happened to put on Screamadelica a few days later, which was not unusual, since I had been listening to it at least once a week that spring. And oh yeah, heh heh, whaddya know, there's that song. The one I thought I'd never heard before. "Come Together." Drugs do funny things to your head.

The best drugs + musical experience I EVER had was definitely Butthole Surfers live on 2 hits of white blotter and smoking pot.
Bootsy Collins "Player of The Year" sounds pretty neat on Vicodin right now. Not the best or anything. Like a moist, stretchy cartoon. This would've been cool on acid.

Mushrooms + (meeting) Timothy Leary at E.A.R. aka Sonic Boom at the Troubador on Santa Monica Blvd. Told myself that if I don’t talk with him I will HATE myself for the rest of my life. So I did for at least 15 minutes…

Took too many mushrooms, felt incredibly fucking sick (physically), put on Past Masters Vol. 1 (Day Tripper, specifically) in an attempt to make myself feel better, felt oddly transported to the early 60s -- everything looked black and white somehow, it sounded completely fresh, like nothing I had ever heard -- sang and danced around like a fool, playing air tambourine, generally freaking out, etc., then went outside and puked my guts out, and felt great for the rest of the day.
Mushrooms + beautiful, empty beach + comfy beach chair + Kid A on a boombox = heaven on Earth.

Oddly enough, the most intense musical experience I ever had was when I drove through a white-out snowstorm listening to Vibrant Forms by Fluxion. I went into a deep trance state and lost track of time. 30 minutes on the road felt like three hours. I have synesthesia and I remember time slowing down and visually moving deeper and deeper into the texture and rhythm of the music. It was like looking at music with a lupe, and then being able to double the magnification and finding even more detail.
It sounds stupid when I type it on ILM, but it was one of the most mind blowing musical experiences I have ever had. I was completely sober and had been for months. I easily competes with any musical experience I have had on acid.
I think Byron Gysin must have had a similar experience when he went into a trance state while riding a bus down a tree-lined path at exactly the right speed. That was the inspiration for his Dream Machine. His trance came from light patterns coming through the trees. Mine came from the sensory deprivation of the heavy snowstorm. I would take that experience over music on drugs any day of the week.

That would be a few tablespoons worth of mace, a spice similar to nutmeg (which will do the job also); they come from the same tree. It appears to affect people differently - literal hallucinations are rare, while some folks (like a friend of mine) experience nothing at all except heartburn. For me, it used to be a pot substitute, with all the same effects. Not as immediately gratifying (takes 4-5 hours for the effects to creep up) but lasts an insanely long time, like up to 24-30 hours.
Morning Glory seeds? Awful, mostly! Tried 'em twice as a teen (unforgettably foul taste): cramps, nausea/vomiting. Feeling tired and yet hyper simultaneously. All music sounded creepy and unpleasant, except, strangely, Cecil Taylor.
Don't do drugs, kids!
