Best drugs + music experience (you can remember)

I got this CD years ago on a lark. For some reason just now, I remembered it again and put on the headphones (each speaker is slightly different, which is supposed to change your brain patterns).

So, on Vicodin, lying down with headphones on, http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000IXS0.01._PE25_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg is the best aural experience I can ever remember. It was like being awake and dreaming at the same time. I was walking through these caves and swampy forests and for awhile I was just watching colors. I think it must have been very close to what being on heroin is like.

There were times I've listened to things on acid/booze/week/coke and it sounded good, but I don't have a clue what it really sounded like.

Spacemen 3 "Playing With Fire" + good ecstacy

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, that was a good time. I forgot about that one. Also good on Special K + weed.

Actually, that meditation system cd sounds like really mellow Spacemen/E.A.R.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 17 June 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

+ acid. Not necessarily stoned, but.... beautiful.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Making a kick ass song on the original PlayStation MTV Music Generator while on Vicodin.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Wow, Al Green on acid. I never would've thought of that. Come to think of it, less obvious stuff like that just might be the greatest stuff to listen to on acid. I wonder what big band sounds like. Or polka.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 17 June 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Orbital - "Out There Somewhere?" + horse-pill sized E = low Earth orbit

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

It was a very happy night. I also listened to Live At Leeds, but the Al Green was like a 75-minute makeout session with the universe.

Licking toads while blaring a screwed-n-chopped "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker, Jr. out of a stack of Marshalls.

On an All El Cholo Diet (Ben Boyer), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

I've had a couple!

Mudhoney "Superfuzz & Bigmuff" on mushrooms
Earth 2 on mushrooms
Monster Magnet "Tab" on acid

Obviously this all took place quite some time ago.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

first time I took mushrooms plus "Misty Mountain Hop" (and then Spacemen 3's "Recurring" followed by Primal Scream's "Screamadelica")

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Mushrooms + Yellow Submarine songtrack.

And more surprisingly, mushrooms + Prince, Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic was pretty inspiring. Especially his cover of "Everyday Is a Winding Road" with Larry Graham on the backing vocals.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 17 June 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and I almost forgot: Mushrooms + Free Design's "Pineapple Crabapple." I did this on New Year's Eve one year and it was the most perfect feeling ever.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 17 June 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

dood that "Every Day..." song is the lowpoint of the album! "Do you Love GAAAAAWD!" uggh. fucking Sheryl Crow....

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

I had some creepy experiences with hash oil and Celtic Frost's "To Mega Therion" too.

- after smoking a grimmy in highschool, listening to "It's my life" by Talk Talk.
- fishbones first was the stoniest.
- Tripping acid and rolling around to The The, Soul Mining.

I remember some interview where the Jesus and Mary Chain said they rejected acid (after a long dalliance) because they were starting to find Val Doonican good.

So closed minded.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Friday, 17 June 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

I don't know about best, but the *last* drug experience I had was about a year and a half ago when I smoked pot and listened to Talkie Walkie while playing online games like Spades and Hearts. I sure was livin' the rock 'n' roll lifestyle at that point.

Lingbertt, Friday, 17 June 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

My Bloody Valentine on the Loveless tour, the old 9:30 Club in Washington DC, 1992. It was one of those perfect evenings when nothing went wrong. We found great seats towards the back (tiny tiny club), had our minds blown by MBV who was at the peak of their powers, and then found a cab ride home quite easily.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 17 June 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh, wait, forgot the drug part. Tripping on very, very strong acid.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 17 June 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

good blotter Acid + Bitches Brew. Without question.

Seuss, Saturday, 18 June 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

The one that sticks out most for me was driving through my old neighborhood in the summer, stoned, listening to Loveless for the 2nd or 3rd time ever. I had to pull the car right over and stop for a while. No words.

Stoner Guy, Saturday, 18 June 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

yeah, to me, music never sounded "better" when stoned.

XTRMNTR on pills is pretty nice.

i only drink and cigarette'it, now. that does me fine

nicholas de jong (nicholas de jong), Saturday, 18 June 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

My fellow hippies and I have greatly enjoyed the feedback in "Anthrax" with our LSD.

Magneto, Saturday, 18 June 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

LSD and the Stone Roses, back in the day when "Fools Gold" had just come out. Epic.

Oh, and I remember doing whippets to the first Warp Records comp back in college, with LFO, Nightmares On Wax's "Aftermath" and the like. Short thrills, but VERY memorable.

Hutlock (Hutlock), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

Beer and cigarettes are drugs, hippy.

Stoner Guy, Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

LSD and Funkadelic spun in the basement of some berkeley co-op I swear giant fucking mouths opened up in the walls and huge monsters were fucking somewhere inside there

lsd and aikea guinea (cocteaus) on new year's eve 1991 after being at some crap kiddie goth club in the suburbs, back home and in bed, at one bit it sounded like liz's vocal cords turned into silk ribbons and spilled all over my face

peaking on LSD + weed + master musicians of jajouka OH FUCK I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS instant train to PARANOIAVILLE

mka (akmonday), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

I had hydrocodone painkillers when I got my tonsils removed, and I was laying in my bed listening to Underworld (dark train). My head on my pillow was in the corner of the room, and as the song went on, I felt like my perspective on the room was climbing up the wall, until I felt like I was up in the upper corner of the room, looking down on the bed and my body. That didn't suck.

tylero (tylero), Saturday, 18 June 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

Spiritualized on acid, Pure Phase tour, Leicester 1994.

Pet Shop Boys on ecstacy, Glastonbury 2000.

Eat Static on speed and acid, Leicester 1995.

mmm.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 18 June 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Missy E + stoned. Music will never sound that good again. Maybe that's why drugs are *bad*: sober it just doesn't sound the same.

I hate to say it, but ...

acid + speed, Phish's 8 hour New Year's Eve set, 1999, in southern Florida. Weather was perfect, every single person you saw was completely fcuked up, and the music was great.

Suzy Creemcheese (SuzyCreemcheese), Saturday, 18 June 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

probably mushrooms/mdma powder at Glastonbury 2003, 2manydjs when I hadn't seen them before, followed by jacques lu cont, sun was shining and I felt like I was floating around the place. kept bursting out laughing at how much fun I was having, amazing, was on a rock solid high for about 14 hours

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 18 June 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

My head on my pillow was in the corner of the room, and as the song went on, I felt like my perspective on the room was climbing up the wall, until I felt like I was up in the upper corner of the room, looking down on the bed and my body. That didn't suck.

That happened to me 2 or 3 times when I was about 8 years old, minus the drugs. Just watching the tv, in some state between asleep and awake, and my POV would rise to the ceiling and wander around, looking down. Awesome, but for some reason I never wanted to tell friends or family about it.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 18 June 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

I've had many, but my favorite is long ago when my neighbor brought a joint over and she convinced me to order New Kids on the Block videos on The Box so she could tell me which New Kid was the cutest. Really good pot + anything, fun or not = fun! PS: we were both in our thirties!

msanthropic, Saturday, 18 June 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

E in 1992, back when it was X (and back when it was actually MDMA and not speedspeedspeed, and back before the rave scene would make it a painful cliche. I am teh old. sigh...) Dancing at some club in lower manhattan with this girl who was just a friend and upon whom I had no designs to this just soulsmashingly beautiful song I'd never heard before. We kept dancing after, but that was the Perfect Moment.

I had to find that song.

And this was Before Teh Internets, so finding it was not going to be easy, since all I remembered was the chorus and that it was beyond gorgeous and filled your body with pure oceanic joy and expressed in chords the lovestalgia I felt for everyone I was about to lose that Senior Week.

And I wouldn't have, except that I happened to put on Screamadelica a few days later, which was not unusual, since I had been listening to it at least once a week that spring. And oh yeah, heh heh, whaddya know, there's that song. The one I thought I'd never heard before. "Come Together." Drugs do funny things to your head.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Saturday, 18 June 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Listened to John Coltrane Live At The Village Vanguard Again on ($0.15 worth!) of an entirely-legal mild natural hallucinogen. Couldn't stop laughing at the crazy noises that Pharoah Sanders coaxed out of his tenor during the extended "Naima". By comparison, Coltrane's solo, which followed, gradually turned into human speech.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 19 June 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Myonga, what was the natural hallucinogen? Seeds?

dropped some acid ( not too strong) and got dragged along ot check DJ TRACE - auckland. new zealand - 1997 or 8 - had heard d'n'b before but not tech-step . deep dark evil funk !

toe-foo (toe-foo), Sunday, 19 June 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

OK, I was actually talking about albums, but since I didn't specify...

The best drugs + musical experience I EVER had was definitely Butthole Surfers live on 2 hits of white blotter and smoking pot.

Bootsy Collins "Player of The Year" sounds pretty neat on Vicodin right now. Not the best or anything. Like a moist, stretchy cartoon. This would've been cool on acid.

Stoner Guy, Monday, 20 June 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

I think I've mentioned this before but once early in my pot career I got WAY too stoned w/two v experienced stoners (both a good 10plus years older than I), we were supposed to go to a metal gig but I couldn't handle it so stayed behind at the record store listening to the last thing we'd put on, "Godz 2". I hate the Godz. Anyway during their cover of "You Won't See Me" I could hear how the singers (it's acapella I believe, maybe I was too wasted to hear the instruments tho) were feeling. Like, "Man, I wanted to sing lead! He always gets the good vocals!" "That harmony was good, this is going Ok" etc. Pretty fun. Then I vomited into the sink. This other time me and a coupld of guys ate 3-4 pieces of hashcake each, had to go and lie down in someone at the party's bedroom and listen to what turned out to be a live tape recorded from the audience of HDU at some gig, 10 mins in we were all convinced we were there and (we had the lights out) they were playing at night. The people talking "around us in the crowd" wouldn't interact w/us, cunts. We tried.

Too much X at Call the Cops staring Happy Mondays Friday Night July 20, 1990. This night changed my life forever!

X + Acid = Candyflip at Primal Scream (Screamadelica) Saturday Night March 7, 1992. Words can’t describe this night.

Mushrooms + (meeting) Timothy Leary at E.A.R. aka Sonic Boom at the Troubador on Santa Monica Blvd. Told myself that if I don’t talk with him I will HATE myself for the rest of my life. So I did for at least 15 minutes…

And…

I currently like to drink Grey Goose and soda and listen to Khia.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

This is a stupid question, but exactly how much stronger is acid than some good mushrooms?

Dumb Question, Monday, 20 June 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Depends on how much acid and what the quality is. Acid has a much longer duration regardless, though. (And also a much worse come down.)

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I've got two that stand out:

Took too many mushrooms, felt incredibly fucking sick (physically), put on Past Masters Vol. 1 (Day Tripper, specifically) in an attempt to make myself feel better, felt oddly transported to the early 60s -- everything looked black and white somehow, it sounded completely fresh, like nothing I had ever heard -- sang and danced around like a fool, playing air tambourine, generally freaking out, etc., then went outside and puked my guts out, and felt great for the rest of the day.

Mushrooms + beautiful, empty beach + comfy beach chair + Kid A on a boombox = heaven on Earth.

Nigel (Nigel), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

probably the best night ever out with music and drugs =
two doves and a big spliff + slacker at elements, electrowerkz. god what a night

just remember when slacker's mix of "roaches" came on, the whole fucking place felt like it was going to explode from all the tension and energy

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

(E + acid) at a rave in '00 in Seattle. first E: made out w/a longstanding acquaintance, which was nice; then after taking the LSD, rush came on during some fairly pedestrian trance DJ's set, which sounded like the greatest thing on earth. went home, fell asleep, and had wonderfully vivid dreams.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Although I've done a lot of music + drugs my best experience I was sober for. I took a friend to se Kid 606 and gave him acid for the 1st time. This was also his first time seeing a live Dj who was outside the trance/house spectrum.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Kid 606 is a DJ? When I saw him it was more in a laptopper/noize stylee.

Acid + Jane's Addiction at '91 Lollapalooza at Wateroo Village, NJ....especially during "Three Days".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

listening to raymond scott on acid was good fun, as all the books and gee-gaws on the shelf began to bop and bounce in time with the tunes. turned the world into a toon.

andy b, Monday, 20 June 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Listening to Switched On By Stereolab. I was 16 and I was smoking some weed out of a borrowed pipe with a friend after school. I don't know what drug residue had been left in the pipe from previous use in the recent past, but it was good times. Boundless energy, visual geometric patterns on everything, and the stereo double tracked guitars and moog squiggles were fantastic. I never did find out what was in that pipe, but I sure liked it.

Oddly enough, the most intense musical experience I ever had was when I drove through a white-out snowstorm listening to Vibrant Forms by Fluxion. I went into a deep trance state and lost track of time. 30 minutes on the road felt like three hours. I have synesthesia and I remember time slowing down and visually moving deeper and deeper into the texture and rhythm of the music. It was like looking at music with a lupe, and then being able to double the magnification and finding even more detail.

It sounds stupid when I type it on ILM, but it was one of the most mind blowing musical experiences I have ever had. I was completely sober and had been for months. I easily competes with any musical experience I have had on acid.

I think Byron Gysin must have had a similar experience when he went into a trance state while riding a bus down a tree-lined path at exactly the right speed. That was the inspiration for his Dream Machine. His trance came from light patterns coming through the trees. Mine came from the sensory deprivation of the heavy snowstorm. I would take that experience over music on drugs any day of the week.

3. Heroin + Spiritualized live show

i've had lots of x party experiences and even some more hippie releated ones, but the best had to be listening to john zorn's naked city on a half vile of really clean liquid. the album never made sense before -- too fast and manic. but for 60 minutes...time was obliterated and space turned into this complex (yet entirely logical) network of lines and colors, tension and release. each second seemed like an hour and each foot a mile. and in the end neither meant anything. i'd do it again, but acid can be heaven or hell and i've gotten too old to place that bet.

Myonga, what was the natural hallucinogen? Seeds?
-- Stoner Guy

That would be a few tablespoons worth of mace, a spice similar to nutmeg (which will do the job also); they come from the same tree. It appears to affect people differently - literal hallucinations are rare, while some folks (like a friend of mine) experience nothing at all except heartburn. For me, it used to be a pot substitute, with all the same effects. Not as immediately gratifying (takes 4-5 hours for the effects to creep up) but lasts an insanely long time, like up to 24-30 hours.

Morning Glory seeds? Awful, mostly! Tried 'em twice as a teen (unforgettably foul taste): cramps, nausea/vomiting. Feeling tired and yet hyper simultaneously. All music sounded creepy and unpleasant, except, strangely, Cecil Taylor.

Don't do drugs, kids!
