And why?

  • Beastie Boys - Hello Nasty. Just a foul, stinking piece of whining crap. Now an instrumental version of Hello Nasty....
  • Bryan Ferry - Mamouna. Sometimes you can be too smooth.
  • Gomez - Bring it on. What was I thinking of?
  • Nelly Furtado - Whoa!Nelly. One song does not make an album.
  • Now that's what I call music 21. Queen, The Shamen, the Cure, Wet Wet Wet. 92 wasn't a vintage year.

i can only remember throwing away Aerosmith's Pump. Just bought it cause a friend liked it. harumph... I throw some promos away. Cant remember any that are worthy of sticking in my memory bank.

I've been busily selling things on half.com. The last few things were something like:

A live Linton Kwesi Johnson CD. Because I didn't like it. His vocals didn't mesh with the instrumental/electronic accompaniment.

"Patty Waters Sings" because no matter how great it's supposed to be, I couldn't get into her screaming.

Simon Shaheen "Turath" because I find his oud playing bloodless. (He needs to go back and listen to what Mohammed el-Qassabji could do with that instrument.)

Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi's 2nd CD (sp?). At first Chuck Eddy had me fooled into thinking this was something worthwhile, but it doesn't quite work for me now that I am over the initial sense of surprise at this particular fusion of styles.

I'm about to send off La India's "Sola," because although there are some nice melodies in some of these songs, the heavy-handed production crushes any value in them. (Bring back Eddie Palmieri as her producer.)

What did I get rid of last...oh right, the Pet Shop Boys albums, because I got the reissues. :-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

travis - the invisible band

that cd blows

Brock K, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bowery Electric Lushlife
Richard Davies Barbarians
Laika Good Looking Blues
Mary Timony Mountains
Hector Zazou Sahara Blue

The better question might be why I got these in the first place. Cause I had liked other things by them, that's why. I still think old Laika, Bowery and Helium are fine. Zazou I'm not sure. Davies, I now realize, is and always has been pure rubbish.

Curt, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Will Oldham: Guarapero blues vol 2 Brian eno: music for airports Godspeed: [20 min e.p. can't remember title] Stereolab: [first 3 singles, can't remember title] siousie and the banshees: the scream

All bar eno: all good records but unoriginal and hardly essential, am getting very ruthless since 'good tunes' are not enough. Godspeed e.p. is not enough of a step up from their very nice debut, which I still have.

Eno: Not arty enough, though I really love another green world.

Using the money for more Cecil taylor and anthony braxton and Xenakis.

I have loads I wish to get rid off...but the only one I have off- loaded thus far is Daft Punk's discovery, as a friend wanted it.

- STAY by Bernard Butler - `Cos it sucks, really. I was a big fan of Suede's first disc, but this just didn't get off the ground for me. Played in once or twice, then it sat in my CD's for veritable eons. I need space, so sorry Bernie.

- SO RED THE ROSE by Arcadia - Don't really know why or how I got it in the first place, but I held onto it for ridiculous archival/joke purposes for a while...only it never seemed funny. Despite contributions from various Durans and Dave Gilmour (!), it's largely unlistenable and yawnsome. Sold it to a frothing Duranie who'll doubtlessly get more enjoyment out of it than I.

- DUST by the Screaming Trees. Because they make me yawn.

- CALL THE AMBULANCE BEFORE I HURT MYSELF by Hilt - Because Skinny Puppy side-projects (let alone "industrial" in general) hasn't aged well at all. Guest backing vocals from that woman out of the appropriately-named Caterwaul don't help the proceedings. Sold it to a fellow member of the Gathering (the Killing Joke list) with even more dubious taste than myself. Bye bye, Hilt.

- NU-CLEAR SOUNDS by Ash - Just because I never listened to it, and can't be bothered with them now. Their first album's alright (but even that may be bound for the "to sell" pile.)

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

IIRC:

Sonic Youth - NYC Ghosts & Flowers
Sonic Youth - Made In USA
Sonic Youth - Silver Sessions
Sonic Youth - A Thousand Leaves
Live Skull - EP with "Mr Wrong" and Snuffer at the same time

I thought it would be easier to continue liking Sonic Youth if I didn't have to see these in my collection everyday. And they pay better money for these than for the other things I tried to sell them (e.g. Jon & Vangelis).

Gah.

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nu-Clear Sounds is in my out-pile. And after thinking I had scored gold by finding, not the supposedly mangled U.S. version, but the UK one used.

Curt, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Curt: sounds like we have similar tastes and tolerances - so, thanks for warning me off the new Richard Davies (Laika's latest I like much less than their 90s pinnacles, but worth having; that Zazou LP was probably the first of his I bought ['94?], but doesn't get an airing now; Bowery E I gave up on pretty quickly; Timony album seemed tempting until I saw her live with Sleater-Kinney and the material was horrid).

I should point out that I never get rid of CDs, I just vacillate endlessly on whether to buy certain ones, partially forget that I ever wanted said item and then, finally, allow helpful posts like Curt's to make up my mind for me.

Michael Jones, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

presocratics _works and days_ - because of the absolutely shit singer/songwriter crap cluttering up the otherwise tolerable noise.

lillienthal _castor & pollux_ - because it doesn't seem very I to rip off autechre and plaid anymore, i don't D, and i'm not into this type of M any longer.

_RGB_ comp - stultifying drone, with a tolerable matmos piece

brandon labelle _maps of tenderness_ - the dj spooky of the new musique concrete world; all theory, no balls.

amon duul (UK) _hawk meets penguin_ - wasn't nearly as bad as it could've been, but fails the "must be 1/5 as good as _yeti_ to keep" test i apply to ADII-related product

your null fame, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

St.Etienne - Good Humor
Lovage - Music To Make Love to Your Old Lady By
Helio Sequence - Com Plex
Clem Snide - The Ghost of Fashion
Sugababes - Overload

I just spent $100 on a second-hand miu miu jacket and needed to recoup money so i could pay rent. I miss that sugababes CD though.

phil, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Palace "There is no one what will take care of me" I can only use so much Will Oldham in my life and I think some of his other stuff is better Clem Snide "Ghost of Fashion" Whiny voice Rainer Maria "A Better Version of Me" not inspired Elliott Smith "Figure 8" way overproduced, songs not as good as "XO" Sugarcubes LP I'm going to regret this

i probably only got about $5 for each of these at Ameoba

dan, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, I just sold off Ghost of Fashion just yesterday. (The first Clem Snide album I do actually like.) Along with Broadway Project, SFA's Mwng, and Dismemberment's Emergency and I. None strike me as bad, but I'd rather have one cd I love then a bunch I don't mind. The really annoying part is when I'm done with this routine cd purging, I always have a box of cd's that I don't want but our too scratched to sell.

bnw, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, three second-hand clem snide 'ghost of fashion' albums floating aruond thanks to the ilm community.

phil, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven months pass...
I offloaded some review copies of things I didn't like @ Berwick Street MVE last weekend - Mick Turner, india.arie, one of the Bill Hicks reissues, Pram, Sondre Lerche, 2Pac, plus sundry other indie/electronica no-hopers.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 January 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Me: "Do you sell empty CD jewel cases?"

Record-store person: "Sure, they're 50 cents each."

Me: "But your bargain rack CDs are 50 cents, too, and most of them are in perfectly good jewel cases."

Record-store person: shrug.

So, I picked three by bands I'd never heard of, based on promising cover art/song titles/etc. I gave them each one spin at home but ended up throwing all three in the garbage (wouldn't have any trade-in value if the best shop in town for trade-ins was selling them for 50 cents). Two of them I don't even remember what they were, but the third was New Fast Automatic Daffodils, Pigeonhole, which I now regret not giving a little more time, having read several positive critical opinions in the meantime. It's gone, in the garbage.

:-( Well, grab another one if you can find it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 January 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Ned, you're already on record as a positive critical opinion.
