you can recognise a J ad J production by listening to some of their productions. There is this certain "glass sound" that sounds like someone shaking ice around in an empty glass while covering with their hands.

startrekman, Monday, 20 June 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

My favorites:

"Tell Me, Do You Still Care" -- S.O.S. Band

"Lonely" -- Janet Jackson (From Rhym Nation)

And the last three tracks off New Edition's Heartbeat (I think that's what it was called.)

Johnny Gill was the lead singer -- late 80s.

Can't remember the exact titles. (Maybe, "I'm Coming Home" and "Can't Stand the Rain."?)

I was living on an aircraft carrier in those days. And the guys in my department were constantly playing that cassette over and over and talking about their girlfriends back home. We were out in the Med then. I loved those songs.

I read 'em telling the BBC how Control was in fact a really dodgy mix or something to that effect.

BARMS, Monday, 20 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

6. "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" - Robert Palmer

Didn't Bernard Edwards produce that? Are you confusing it with the Cherrelle original?

At least eight or nine of the ten posts I've made in the last year have had something to do with Wally Badarou.

Andy K. (ADK), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha - guess who produced the Jessica Simpson "Boots" remake?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

My screw up - I just looked at the songwriting credits, not who produced it - I didn't even hear the Cherrelle original until last year.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha - guess who produced the Jessica Simpson "Boots" remake?

Wally Badarou?

(That's nine or ten of the last 11.)

1-10: klymaxx - "wild girls"!!!!!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 June 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

ha I once played "Encore" and One Way's "Cutie Pie" at State Of The Union in DC and they said... "we don't play that kind of music here..."

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

1. SOS Band: Just Be Good To Me

6. SOS Band: Just The Way You Like It
7. Alexander O'Neal: (What Can I Say) To Make You Love Me)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

("Come Back To Me" and "Let's Wait Awhile" are in there mainly because they are good songs, not so much because of terrific production)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

The Cherelle "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" thread has thrown me into an extravaganza of Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis appreciation. That and the fact that on the drive home last night, I was lucky enough to hear Janet Jackson's "Nasty" blaring out of a car on the highway. I had completely forgotten about Janet's stuff in the late 80's and how much I wanted to buy her albums back then but didn't do it because I guess it wasn't cool in my circle of friends...although I did buy Jody Watley's album from around the same time so I can't figure it out now. Anyway. I still love Human League's "Human" even though I know a lot of people hate that.

And watching Janet's old videos again on You Tube has just been the ultimate blast for me.

I want to hear more of the Jam/Lewis thing.

Bimble, Monday, 4 June 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

Is there a Jam/Lewis production discography anywhere on the net?

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 4 June 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

That's what I'm wondering man. Please help my drunk ass out.

Bimble, Monday, 4 June 2007 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

Aha!

Wikipedia is the fucking shit.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 4 June 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard maybe ten of those songs. And they're all by Janet Jackson.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 4 June 2007 02:54 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks so much!!!!!!!! Fantastic!

Also just want to share this, though it's not a Jam/Lewis thing, it's obvious where the influence comes from...

I know the Spotify list isn't meant to be all-encompassing, but leaving out "Rub You the Right Way" seems glaring.

I just spent the past few days listening to Questlove's podcast interview with Jimmy Jam (from a few years back). It's almost 6 hours of podcast. Very educational.

I don't have a POX at the moment, but was just listening to New Edition's Heart Break album and If It Isn't Love jumped out at me like a total blast from the past. Loved that song at the time and just completely forgot about it for 3+ decades.

Sort of heading toward their "That's the Way Love Goes" vibe (which I learned from the epic Questlove podcast doesn't actually have any guitar, it's all played on keyboard, same with "If").

so obviously the state of Minnesota is going nuts for the Timberwolves right now and Jimmy Jam did an interview with our local sports talk station, as he's a Wolves super fan and was kind of like our Jack Nicholson always sitting courtside

90% of it was basketball but at the end was the obligatory "so tell is about what you're working on now" question and he said that he's executive producing a documentary on Jam & Lewis/Flyte Tyme and also one on Gamble/Huff and Bell, both of which are pretty exciting to me
