For Monster Magnet, Tab...25 and Dopes to Infinity.

"Spine of god" is the one to get from Monster Magnet.

Fu-Manchu were pretty crappy.

Fu Manchu's 'In Search Of...' rocks REALLY hard. pretty much the peak of their career.

The high point of Fu Manchu's career was their cover of "Godzilla," but that appeared on an out of print Man's Ruin EP, so get their double live CD from a couple of years ago - they play "Godzilla" and every other song you'd ever wanna hear by them, plus about two dozen more.

Superjudge is the best Monster Magnet album. I still listen to it all the time.

monster magnet - spine of god first, then tab, superjudge... maybe monster magnet and dopes to infinity if you find yourself feeling it.

as simonx said, in search of is the best fu manchu album (though i haven't heard the live album).

Big disappointment from Kyuss standards. My advice is to not bother.

Monster Magnet's "Dopes To Infinity" is decent, summing up about the best of both sides of their career (underproduced underdeveloped and overproduced poprock). Power Trip is closer to the end. God Says No sucks. And the out of print Spine of God is not the legend it's cracked up to be. This is the underproduced and underdeveloped stuff I was referring to. It's pretty crappy.

Fu Manchu is more punk than anything. I don't like it much at all.

It's all like Nashville Pussy, but probably worse. Can't listen to it and sure as hell can't sell it.

Fu Manchu's "King of the Road" is pretty good.

I was too harsh. Speaking from memories of disappointment.

Monster Magnet - "God Says No" - I know I said this sucks and for the reasons you would buy a Magnet album, it does. But, it is also rather cool because it is a blatant rip off of Bonniwell Music Machine. That is also why I said it sucks, however, because it is suddenly very obvious where he got his singing style from and lots of subtle Magnet elements. On this album, it is not subtle, though, it is a direct rip. But, on the other hand, I really like Bonniwell Music Machine, so it's kind of cool. Doubters, check out "Kiss of The Scorpion" off God Says No on iTunes. The rest of it sounds like a cross between 80's Iggy Pop and Nine Inch Nails, which should also explain why it sucks.

Monster Magnet - "Spine of God" is mostly listenable except for one long boring, grating song and really lame bong sound effects. Butthole Surfers "Widowermaker" EP did it much better.

Monster Magnet - "Dopes To Infinity" is honestly good. I'm listening to it right now and I am glad I have it.

Monster Magnet - "Superjudge" and "Powertrip" are both okay. I'd give them both a B- grade. Superjudge is more basic rock and Powertrip is more produced rock.

None of Monster Magnet is really all that stoney, but Dopes To Infinity has the most spacey parts and effects.

Fu Manchu - I still don't like this band.

I'd definitely recommend the Magnet albums at a cheap used price. I would not recommend a single for more than $7, though.

Hmm, I note you are not listing Tab...25.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

I never heard Tab, Ned. Unfortunate? Certainly, the name sounds psychedelic.

I've heard Tad, though? Remember Tad? That 300 pound grunge guy?

Looks pretty neat. I bet this is the one to start off with. Am I right? Probably long out of print, too.

Stoner Guy, Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

It might be but it is damn well worth seeking out. The lead track is 35 minutes long or something close to it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Certainly their best cover, too.

Stoner Guy, Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Monolithic Baby! came out last year and it's great. That and Dopes are the ones you want.
