I Don't Mind Dumb Lyrics But Seriously, People, "One Word," Seriously, I Mean, Gawd!

One word breaks the code of silence,
Silence tells me all I need to know.
One Word,
One Word, tells me everything I need to know.

One world driven in to madness,
Madness driven by the depths below.
One Word,
One Word, tells me everything I need to know

[chorus]
It's not the way that I want it,
It's just the way that I need it.
Day after day
It's not the way that I want it,
It's just the way that I need it.
Day after day

One lie tells a thousand stories,
The greatest stories that were ever told.
One Lie,
One Lie, tells the greatest stories ever told.

One man can predict the future,
a future journey in to outer space.
One Man,
One Man, a future journey in to outer space.

[chorus 2x]

More like best lyrics ever.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

I don't even know what takes it over the edge for me: the "greatest stories THAT WERE ever told," "a future journey into outer space" or "madness driven by the depths below."

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

...or the logic of the first verse: silence tells her all she needs to know; one word breaks the silence; now it's the word that tells her all she needs to know.

And, last but not least: SO WHAT'S THE WORD?!!!

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

It's a kind of earnest, enigmatic bullshit that's rare in pop music today and I'm quite grateful for it.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

everybody knows that the bird is the word.

Hippie.

Mystical/futurist fatalism in a Visage rip-off by a heavy metal scion whose last album was earthbound (if brilliant) glam-punk! Kelly is without question one of the most rewarding, unique and unpredictable artists out there and she gets no love for it. The rest of the album is pretty great too, aside from an overreaching ballad or two.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I beg to differ: "unpredictable" =/= "willing to work in whatever genre seems to sell." Would you call, say, Vanilla Ice's brief re-emergence as a gangsta rapper deliciously unpredictable, or simply desperate?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

well it depends how cynical you are, really. she was performing "sunglasses at night" at her live shows for the last album and saying how much she loves the eighties at them. the album certainly lives up to her corey hart dreams.

One World by Anthrax
Stop it!
There's been too much debate
We could save ourselves from Holocaust
Or is that just our fate
Start now
But we continue to balk
We let the genie out of the bottle
But we still hold the cork

One, Two - NOT! Three, Four - DIE!
One, Two - NOT! Three, Four - DIE!

Ignorance, is no excuse
For violence
NO ONE WINS...

ONE WORLD! ONE WORLD!!
ONE WORLD! - Welcome to it
ONE WORLD! - Don't abuse it
ONE WORLD! - To live out your life
ONE WORLD! - Total schism
Tunnel vision.
ONE WORLD - Taming the beast
Fighting for peace

Killing,
You pushed a button, that's all you did
It's much harder to kill a man
If you've seen pictures of his kids
Responsibility
And what are all our lives worth?
What kind of sentence would you serve
For killing the earth

Russians
They're only people like us
Do you really think they'd blow up the world
They don't love their lives less
America
Stop singing hail to the chief
Instead of thinking S.D.I.
He should be thinking of peace

ONE WORLD!!!

Stoner Guy, Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha.
x-post to miccio: i guess i'm far too cynical... hell, even "Sunglasses at Night" repulses me for its horrid backstory (label summons teen male model to sing a less-weird "Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This")! I need to work on this.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

writing songs is hard.

That last post so desperately needed a pic of Ashlee Simpson being all pouty.

baby animals " one word"
Oh I wake up feeling the same way every day
Aching numb with the pain that I can't chase away
So I'm wondering who's taking up your sacred precious time
Living from day to day without a single sign
Would I lie? Oh no
One word, one letter, one line
And I'd feel a whole lot better
One look would way it's alright
And I'd feel a whole lot better

My heart breaks the way you turn your back and carry on
And my head hurts 'cause I just can't work out why it all went wrong
So I'm wondering, oh the more I think the less I understand
Leaving is easy when you know you're in command
Would I lie? oh no
One word, one letter, one line
And I'd feel a whole lot better
One look would way it's alright
And I'd feel a whole lot better

Would I try, try to keep
Just a little something that means nothing to me
Ooh why pretend that I'm in that deep
Lord, I thought you knew me, ooh yeah
One word, one letter, one line
And I'd feel a whole lot better
One look would way it's alright
And I'd feel a whole lot better

Evocative words that on analysis don't quite mean anything, so she could post successfully on a rockism or poststructuralism thread ("she" being songwriter Linda Perry). Fortunately, the lyrics work better as music than as philosophy; there's a sadness, codes being broken, mystery silence, mystery word, depressed monotone, so "It's not the way that I want it/It's just the way that I need it/Day after day" has the feel of a compulsion. The need (whatever it is) is not taken care of but simply responded to, day after day.

The rest of the album doesn't work nearly as well for me; it's more rock than "One Word," and Kelly doesn't have the voice for rock, can't dominate the music, instead just sort of wanders around in it.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Monday, 20 June 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh, is this Linda Perry again?!

By the way, I love the friggin' chorus. I wish it went somewhere else - into a post-chorus section or something - but these three chords are pretty amazing.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 20 June 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

Lest we forget, Linda Perry is also the author of:

25 years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination

- which sounds better than it reads, actually, since it gives her strange voice some interesting hills to climb; nonetheless its attempt to be meaningful is ridiculous. I wonder if "One Word" was conceived also as a meaningful statement, or if Linda, now 13 years older, was simply trying to make the words evoke, with no particular idea in mind. Or maybe the phrase "one word" has a definite subcultural meaning known to aficionados of something or other, driven by the depths below.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps the word is "chalice." Or "interregnum."

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Supposedly it was influenced by Nostradamus!

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Or perhaps the song is about Bush; specifically, Bush's last State of the Union address, with its announcement of the new NASA budget (future journey into outer space), not to mention the lies. Look at the number of w's in that lyric!

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

And, last but not least: SO WHAT'S THE WORD?!!!

-- joseph cotten

Word up! Hang on, no wait, that's two words. Maybe the word is simply, 'word'. Word.

moley, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, the worst lyric ever written surely must be:

Girls are sexy just like Pepsi
Boys are rotten just like cotton

That's you she's singing about, Joseph!

moley, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

all your promises
don't taste so sweet
when the world comes down
like a satellite
i could make it blue, yeah
cool and sharp
i got vanity, yeah
tearing me apart

i want one more word
that don't taste so sweet
when love comes true
it don't come free

you got chemistry, yeah
i can see it burn
i've been out all night
in the big city
i know it hurts
i need one more word
and i need it now
ah, i've been told
don't make no sense
when it all comes down

i want one more word
that don't taste so sweet
when love comes true
it don't come free

(repeat to fade)
