One world driven in to madness,Madness driven by the depths below. One Word,One Word, tells me everything I need to know
[chorus]It's not the way that I want it,It's just the way that I need it.Day after dayIt's not the way that I want it,It's just the way that I need it.Day after day
One lie tells a thousand stories,The greatest stories that were ever told. One Lie,One Lie, tells the greatest stories ever told.
One man can predict the future,a future journey in to outer space. One Man,One Man, a future journey in to outer space.
[chorus 2x]

My heart breaks the way you turn your back and carry onAnd my head hurts 'cause I just can't work out why it all went wrongSo I'm wondering, oh the more I think the less I understandLeaving is easy when you know you're in commandWould I lie? oh noOne word, one letter, one lineAnd I'd feel a whole lot betterOne look would way it's alrightAnd I'd feel a whole lot better
Would I try, try to keepJust a little something that means nothing to meOoh why pretend that I'm in that deepLord, I thought you knew me, ooh yeahOne word, one letter, one lineAnd I'd feel a whole lot betterOne look would way it's alrightAnd I'd feel a whole lot better

The rest of the album doesn't work nearly as well for me; it's more rock than "One Word," and Kelly doesn't have the voice for rock, can't dominate the music, instead just sort of wanders around in it.

By the way, I love the friggin' chorus. I wish it went somewhere else - into a post-chorus section or something - but these three chords are pretty amazing.

25 years and my life is stillTrying to get up that great big hill of hopeFor a destination
- which sounds better than it reads, actually, since it gives her strange voice some interesting hills to climb; nonetheless its attempt to be meaningful is ridiculous. I wonder if "One Word" was conceived also as a meaningful statement, or if Linda, now 13 years older, was simply trying to make the words evoke, with no particular idea in mind. Or maybe the phrase "one word" has a definite subcultural meaning known to aficionados of something or other, driven by the depths below.

Word up! Hang on, no wait, that's two words. Maybe the word is simply, 'word'. Word.
