it's boring! like his other albums! but different! you'll love it!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 20 June 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

It's great. Ben Ratliff wrote about it in the New York Times yesterday.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 20 June 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

it's great

Best rock update of 20th century composition since Branca's Lesson 1.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

I like it, but the idea of imposing it on anyone else brings back memories of being 17 or 18... everyone knows or knew some guitar magazine-buying dickhead who had his mind blown by Malmsteen, or even better, Michael Angelo, and they'd always try and play tapes of it if you went round their house or whatever. "This is, like, totally unreal! How does he DO that??" And, for better or worse, as a non-musician that's the level Orthrelm works on for me, which makes me feel very uncomfortable (although everyone should see them live, even if only the once)

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't necessarily drop this in the lap of all of my friends - just like I wouldn't drop Steve Reich or Terry Riley or Philip Glass, apropos of nothing. But I probably would mention it, and for anyone who gave me a response other than "and?", I'd burn a copy.

The dude blew Nels Cline's mind when Cline went to see him a couple of years ago.

I think on a surface listen, Orthrelm is shred. Some hear clutter and clatter, others hear, like it was said above, an update on 20th century composition.

I quite like it in small doses.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Wow, randomness above.

The fact that guitar guy in Orthrelm blew Nels Cline's mind is an indication that the guy isn't simply a shredder, post-modern hesher.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

the new orthrelm is probably good, but I haven't heard it yet. seen them do that type of stuff live and it's been AMAZING. though i imagine that live >>>>>> recorded. visuals, volume, etc.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

What visuals? They just stand there, eyes locked on each other.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

FRETBOARD VISUALS. and the staring is part of what i mean too--it's pretty tense live.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

this album is completely heady and amazing, just like watching them perform the piece. it's the best one yet.

i think it invokes xenakis more than anyone, really. evidence of performance and composition mastery. also a very difficult listen until the ear settles into its space.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

ratliff's piece blew chunx! he actually admitted to not listening to the whole thing. fuckhead.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

henry flynt is a GOOD CALL

j. rosenberg (pukeandburn), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Yes, the Ratliff piece was stupid. But come on. Orthrelm and Burnt Sugar in the Sunday NY TImes! You gotta love that!

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

hell if i know what you guys are on about. i thought "ORTHRELM" was some new acronym like LOL or ROFL or some such.

like "When Ken blew a loogey out his nose during the meeting, I was all ORTHRELM!"

john'n'chicago, Monday, 20 June 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

it is a band.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

no, i don't have to fucking love it. what's the point of highlighting good bands if you're just gonna talk shit? fuck that. the new york times music section blows donkey balls these days.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

JOEL DON'T BE SO SENSITIVE. JEEZE.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

dude, it's not my band, i don't care all that much. it's just fucking dumb. ratliff eats shit.
