either my search function is broken or there has never been a Cormega thread!

i just bought a bargain-priced double disc containing his first two albums and a bunch of bonus tracks. i've only listened to about half of 'the realness' so far, but it seems really, really good. and the productions are top-notch. and there's no skits.

Classic. One of the few NYC rappers who can actually pick beats and put out good albums. His flow is a little sloppy, perhaps, but he's an underrated rapper who has depth which seperates him from yer average Q.B thug rapper. Makes better albums than his (ex?) arch-nemesis Nas. His voice is an acquired taste, though.

That double cd of his first two albums with extra unreleased songs like that killer "no equivalent" with Tragedy Khadafi is a rather good deal.

Search : "the realness", "true meaning" (his best release, i reckon), "the testament" (his '97 debut for Def Jam that was unreleased until this year), his "legal hustle" compilation (includes two of his best tracks, "a beautiful mind" and the Ghostface featuring "toney/montana"), his old verse on PHD's "set it off" from '91 where he uses the word "illmatic" 3 years before Nas, his "sex, drugs, bitches and money" parts 1 and 2 12" from '92, his fresh-outta-jail verse on the classic 1995 Q.B posse track "on the real", his "fuck Nas and Nature" dis track, a couple of his unreleased tracks like "extreme with 16" and "slow down" with Foxy Brown, his verse on Mobb Deep's "what's ya poison" and the Ayatollah produced b.side "take mine".

Destroy : the old Def Jam track with Carl Thomas where he tried to kick a Hova-ish fast flow. That flow wasn't really working for him.

Damn this thread died quick. I agree about his voice, he's got kind of a lisp or something. I think I like Nas's voice better, but Cormega's got the better productions.

'62 pick up' is great, but yeah: his flow is so QUIET and restrained; it almost sounds lackadaisical.

"rap's a hustle" is real nice. his flow is definitely growing on me.

Revive! I've been listening to the whole 'mega back catalog, and I'm just astounded by what I missed the first time round. His ability to pick beats is probably the best of any NY-style rapper, and he has that melancholy-flow that I just love. Anyone else want to weigh in?

i also have only the double disk mentioned above, but some of those beats are BAD, and none of them are great. it makes me sad that such a talented rapper should have to make due with such crummy tracks.

haha, i have to amend my initial opinion above as i ended up selling that double cd and before doing so i only ripped a few tracks from it. oh well

I think The Realness is absolutely awful, beats, rhymes, the whole thing. True Meaning is where its at, Ellis was right about the good songs on Legal Hustle but mostly thats a dog too. The double-disc Realness+truemeaning+bonustracks is worth it for the bonus tracks, and that it's the price of a single CD in most places. Bonus tracks are ace.

Yeah, True Meaning is by far his best. It's short and sweet, every tracks a winner, no stupid skits

The Realness is just as good as True Meaning.

Both versions of "Fallen Soldiers", "Thun & Kicko", "Unforgiven", "Glory Days", "Raps A Hustle" and "They Forced My Hand" are all top-notch.

"Thun and Kicko" is raw as fuck! Dude murdered P.

However, he got embarrassed by Ghostdini on "Tony/Montana" there's just no fucking with that verse

its good but its def not as good as true meaning or realness (which i like now) (its prob better than 'legal hustle') -- him or ayatolah (i def still think true meaning is his best)

Large Pro has the best beat on this imo -- either him or ayatollah
