Anybody heard the new Echoboy album 'elektrik Soul Psymphonie'?
Or even read a review of it anywhere?

I absolutely loved his first album and it still sits in my top 100 of all time, but never really liked anything he's done since, but I read that the new album was a return the Krautrock Electronic stuff he used to do?

this is the first i've heard of it!

i loved most of "volume two", and "giraffe" really grew on me. haven't listened to any of his stuff for years, mind. i went off him slightly after seeing him live: he just stood there rocking out embarrassingly.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 20 June 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Comes out today on Earworm - There's a track on his website that sounds pretty good....

actionjackson, Monday, 20 June 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Grimly -- I can't remember if we've discussed Giraffe ever: I picked it up for a quid in Fopp and it was more than worth it. Not sure I can see myself forking out for a new one mind.

alext (alext), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

no, i don't think we have. for a quid it's a BARGAIN. wow.

i've hunted around the office for promos of the new one, but no sign. i got the last two for free, so it's probably time i handed over some cash for this one. actionjackson: if it sucks, i'm blaming YOU :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

I must admit, I paid full price for the first one - I THINK it was after reading a review in the NME (God knows why), but the rest of them I've either been given or picked up cheap in Record and Tape exchange.

Even so I am loathe to pay full price for his new one given the fact I didn't really like anything other than the 1st...

Ah, nice, I like Echoboy a lot, they're one of those pleasant surprises. Have to look for this when I'm over there...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

I saw echoboy live and they did nothing for me, but now I'm intrigued

Comes out today on Earworm -

EARWORM is still active???

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Yup,

They're still knocking around, released some stuff by the Earlies recently, and I think they might have re-released some old Spacemen3 stuff a few months ago, although I'm buggered if I can remember what

actionjackson, Monday, 20 June 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

earworm went away but came back. the besnard lakes album they put out recently is dead nice stuff too

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 20 June 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

i think giraffe is an underrated album, and was a lovely surprise after the tedium of "volume 2"

i finally bought "elektrik soul psymphonie" the other day; got it for three quid from some amazon partner dude who pretty much delivered it before i'd even clicked "submit". i'm listening to it now and so far it is wonderful: a little meandering at points, but with an hour of grooves i can forgive that completely. i'm only six tracks in (out of 20) but woah, this could be a lost classic. already.

i have, however, spoken too soon many times in the past.

anyone know what echoboy is/are up to now?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 November 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

okay, it's not quite a lost classic. more meandering than grooving. but still. when it's good, it's damn good.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 3 November 2006 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

Echoboy produced the first (and last, since they've just split up) album by fellow Nottingham citizens Punish The Atom: I Cry Demolition.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 3 November 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

Echoboy was guitarist in The Hybirds, who released one album of rockin' Britpop (amirite), of which I own a solitary track ('Suzy Parker'), which actually kicks some pretty heavy ass.

Perhaps worth following up?

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

I've got a couple of Hybirds singles, and saw them live once. OK, but a bit too neat-and-tidy orthodox Britpop, and nothing which set them apart from the herd.

Whereas the one time I saw Echoboy live, supporting Six By Seven - my God, it was fantastic. Heavy lengthy droney proggy trippy Krautrocky Hawkwindy shoegazey stuff.

The former manager of the Hybirds now DJs regularly in Nottingham, as The Reverend Car Bootleg.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

heheheh. louis, here's an excerpt from a review i wrote in 2002:

Echoboy mainman Richard Warren used to front a dire Who- soundalike band called The Hybirds. Then, so the legend goes, he heard a Can record and gave himself up to the power of the groove. Tonight he and his band walk on and launch into new single Automatic Eyes, and it is godlike: a motorik, hypnotic, two-chord beast.

Too hypnotic, perhaps: it plays tricks with Warren's mind, erasing the past four glorious years of experimentalism. He straps on his guitar and he's a Hybird again, with the attendant embarrassment of licks, shapes and turgid tunes. He conjures up a stomping, disco- flavoured closer, but I'm not going to forgive him that easily.

that said: i'm now wondering if, given the way my tastes have altered in the past few years, i might like them. fuck.

That first Echoboy album sounds like it belongs in that 'lost classic' thread I just started...

one year passes...

Giraffe is pretty good....anyone wanna add?

Just got offed, Monday, 21 July 2008 09:54 (seventeen years ago)

He produced the I Want To Be The President single by Electrelane.

I have, and quite like, Volume 1; Kit & Holly is a great piece of odd pop, and Constantinople is a fantastic piece of dub. Other than that it was OK - bit too meandering, perhaps. Another slice of pop, or two, would have been worthwhile. Jot heard anything since.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 21 July 2008 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

the Flashlegs Suite 12" is pretty much all you need by this guy.

Raw Patrick, Monday, 21 July 2008 10:04 (seventeen years ago)

I think I still marginally prefer Vol. 1 but it's a tough call as to whether Kit & Holly is better than Automatic Eyes. Model 352 is my favourite Vol. 1 track, I think.

First three and last three tracks on Giraffe are all cool, Fun In You not bad either, the other three, nicely positioned in the middle, are a bit tedious tho. And good as "Wasted Spaces" is, it DOES remind me far too much of "aggro"-era Primal Scream.

Just got offed, Monday, 21 July 2008 10:11 (seventeen years ago)

giraffe is probably the best album overall.. although nothing on it is quite at a kit & holly level..

electricsound, Monday, 21 July 2008 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

three months pass...

"Wasted Spaces" is miles better than anything on XTRMNTR or Evil Heat.

restraint and blindness (Just got offed), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

i recently checked out the "43" single, and it's probably my best liked track of his since kit & holly.. i might just bother getting hold of ESS after all..
