Because they haven't got one.
And they are great, 'Retreat' is one of the best singles of the year.
Album comes in August.
Anyone else is waiting for it?

zeus, Monday, 20 June 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

are they still signed to moshi moshi or has a big label jumped in and snatched em up a la Bloc Party ?

mark e (mark e), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

They've signed to V2.

zeus, Monday, 20 June 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

I bought a ton of copies of their debut single "22 Grand Job" way back in the day and recently sold them on Ebay for about 80 dollars apiece. Therefore, they are great.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

That is just ridiculously wise.

Ryan Pitchfork, Monday, 20 June 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

I'll sell the album promo for $80 then

snotty moore, Monday, 20 June 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Good luck w/ that, Snotty.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure about them. I hear a dumber version of Art Brut, one that feels "planned out" and not as lyrically clever.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 20 June 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

you must have struck a high point in the market, snrub, because those are currently going for about £3.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 20 June 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

twenty two grand job in the city that sounds nice

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 20 June 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Musically they're better than Art Brut. Lyrics are not so funny, but they are not so intentionally 'funny' band either.

zeus, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

i like. will say hello at Glasto.

album has leaked and is pretty good overall, but when it's really good (eg the three singles) it's aces.

Lee F# (fsharp), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Erm...

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

yeah i was gonna say

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
I'm thoroughly unconvinced. One of the worst bands I've seen perform this year and the single leaves me cold after three plays. And that's coming from a Paul Epworth fanboy.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

the original demo of 22 grand job is better. i can't remember how either of the follow-up singles go but to be fair i've listened to them both only the once

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 21 July 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
And that's coming from a Paul Epworth fanboy.

That must be the problem.

zeus, Thursday, 11 August 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

You think you're clever, don't you?

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 11 August 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

well, fuck, i could sell a semen encrusted pair of gym socks for $80 on EBay! For those of you who haven't figured it out, here is the ultra-hush-hush inner workings of EBay's secret cash-making engine:

braindead consumers + too much money + unshakable addiction to buying + near zero sales resistance + simple mechanism to easily acquire merchandise = BIG FUCKING PAYOFF FOR CON ARTISTS, UNSCRUPULOUS HUCKSTERS, AMORAL JUNK PEDDLERS

michael burble, Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

fuck up sook

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 11 August 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

You think you're clever, don't you?

I know it, not just think.

zeus, Friday, 12 August 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

i love the two first singles, can't wait to hear the album.
saw them live last december and they blew my mind, they're great. much in the current new wave(length), but they sound fresh and convincing.

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
i'm going to revive this because i had yet another listen to the album last night and i still think it's bloody fantastic. but i am coming to the conclusion that i'm almost listening to it as if it's paul epworth's album, in the same way that Rachel Stevens's album is a Richard x album. is that ok? it's great anyway, and both Retreat and Work Work Work will be up there with the singles of the year come a-counting time.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Our own Mr Fastnbulbous' website review encouraged me to get this and I'm listening to it very hard and I quite like it but I don't hear why anybody would get over-excited about it - musically it's utterly nu-Indie generic and maybe the songs are marginally more interesting than the Karzie Bloc Parkheads and some of the lyrical themes are spikey and admirable but fuck me it's anonymous isn't it?

I Oppose All Rock and Roll (noodle vague), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

I don't think anyone gets over-excited about it - a good debut album with a few top songs. But I like some other acts of this "nu-Indie" thing as well, so maybe that's the problem.

zeus, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

seven months pass...
i don't hate this. it's a little hard to believe that this is only coming out now in the states. or did i just get a really later promo copy. and what is the deal between V2 and Dim Mak of all labels?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Not so hard to believe, if you see Art Brut's debut record, which is still hasn't come out in the US...
By the way the non-album single "All Too Human" deserves a listen, great song, shows some improvement.

zeus (zeus), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Art Brut > The Rakes >>>>>>> The Arctic Monkeys

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

i really like this album, esp 'work work work pub club sleep'

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

I was wrong about them, I like Capture/Release a lot, tho I'm not sure why.

Ricky Nadir (noodle vague), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 22:32 (twenty years ago)

22 Grand Job > Apply Some Pressure >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> All that other NME bullshit mofackin crap.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Akshully I think "22 Grand Job" is the worst song on the album. It sounds like sub-Britpop crap to me.

Ricky Nadir (noodle vague), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 23:15 (twenty years ago)

you don't actually remember what britpop sounds like, do you? i must say i'm jealous of that.

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 23:16 (twenty years ago)

I remember surprisingly more of what Britpop sounds like than pretty much anything else that happened during the mid-90s, but I guess Britpop gets repeated on telly sometimes.

Ricky Nadir (noodle vague), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 23:22 (twenty years ago)

(NB This is not an endorsement of Britpop which was pretty much unrelentingly grim.)

Ricky Nadir (noodle vague), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 23:22 (twenty years ago)

"Ten New Messages" is a really good album. The Rakes and the Futureheads are the only keepers from the last 3 years of British rock. You know it's true.

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Well, I think "Ten New Messages" is a massive disappointment, there is not a single good track like the singles were on "Capture/Release". Perhaps just second album syndrome, and they come back successfully with their 3rd, dunno, but this is just poor, from them.

zeus, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

This new Rakes album will die a sudden death like the second album by The Futureheads did.
Will Maximo Park face a similar fate?

Toucan3000, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't heard that yet, but the Futureheads' album was quite good I think.

zeus, Thursday, 29 March 2007 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

lol the rakes always remind me of dk clowning lemon-red

deej, Thursday, 29 March 2007 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Poor Rakes get little love around here. I saw them a couple summers ago at Double Door in Chicago and they were wonderful. Like post-debut Maxïmo Park, Futureheads and Franz Ferdinand albums, they especially have trouble making impact in the U.S., though most shows seem to sell out in the UK. But the songs really have staying power and have even grown on me over time, including Ten New Messages. Closest comparison I can think of in songwriting, but not sound, would be the last couple Pulp albums. The new one, Klang! is short but excellent, certainly kicks the sh*t out of something like The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. http://mog.com/fastnbulbous/blog/1247904

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

their debut is great, the last one was awful like lots of those bands' second albums

Hoos Passansteeno (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

Last one was actually good! The songs were just...hmm, more modest? Less hooky? And too produced. But I like Klang! a lot. It's a short, sharp messy little record, with some great lyrics. Fast too.

paulhw, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

I loved the first one and like what I've heard from the newest as well.

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I don't know in what universe you could call the soph albums from any of those bands "awful." They may be less frenetic, bushytailed and fashionable in comparison, but they're great in more subtle ways, just like later albums from Magazine, The Jam, Buzzcocks, Madness, Gang Of Four, Undertones, Killing Joke, etc.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

'Klang' is better than 'Ten New Messages': punchier, more direct, funnier, though I miss the hits. There are no such songs here like 'Retreat' or '22 Grand Job', but still a step in the right direction. 'Bitchin' In The Kitchen' is my favourite, and the piano tracks are good too ('The Woes Of The Working Woman' and 'Muller's Ratchet'.

zeus, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

the second rakes album, second futureheads album and much of the second maximo park album border on awful and pointless. maximo is the only one id even imagine listening to at this point in my life

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 March 2009 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

Second Futureheads and Maximo Park was not that bad, the Rakes' and Art Brut's second was a disappointment however. Don't mention the second Bloc Party, which was beyond awful. Perhaps this topic worthy of a poll. Hm.

zeus, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

i love a weekend in the city but then again i liked silent alarm the most of the debuts anyway. i don't categorize art brut in this group, they seemed to be more of a US band to me really

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 March 2009 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Art Brut is more successful in the US, however I've always felt some kind of similarity between the Rakes and them: funny and realistic lyrics about modern life is still rubbish, a touch of '77 punk in the music (OK, the Rakes a bit more 'angular'), sharp and short songs. Perhaps I'm wrong.

zeus, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i never really but them together cuz art brut is so wink wink cheeky FUN and rakes are so dead seriously dreary, but yeah sonically they aren't that far off

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 March 2009 21:43 (seventeen years ago)

Futureheads 2nd netter than the 3rd. And the first, in fact. A dark horse, and quite beautiful.

paulhw, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

i've tried revisiting ten new messages a couple of times but it just doesn't get there for me... we danced together is a good tune but the rest is in one ear and out the other. another song as the level of 'work work work pub club sleep' would have me back in a flash, that song is fantastic (and the production is awesome too)

Bad, Bad Memories of a Good Time (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

yeah that song is really incredible

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

don't skip "little superstitions" off ten new messages. can never get enough of that.

YGS, Thursday, 26 March 2009 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

Can we talk about how comically awful "Suspicious Eyes" was? OMG that song.

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Thursday, 26 March 2009 01:41 (seventeen years ago)

lol is that the song about tom cruise?

J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 March 2009 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

It's the one about racism/terrorism where different people sing as characters and it contains omgseriously? lyrics such as this gem:

These people are assuming who I am, but they're wrong
Got a beard and a bag so they think I got a bomb
I saw everyones reaction soon as I stepped through the door
All acting like they've never seen a brown person before

I thought it was a joke when I first heard it and part of me still really hopes that it is. It's just such a bad idea.

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Thursday, 26 March 2009 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

lol the rakes with a grime rapper

J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 March 2009 01:55 (seventeen years ago)

BBC reviews are just...BC reviews, but still, a good one:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/9z4h

Hmm, I might become the one man cheerleading squad.

And yeah, suspicious eyes. Even the name is awful.

Disco Stfu (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 29 October 2009 12:30 (sixteen years ago)

a shame, but the drop off in quality between the first and second albums was way too big for me
