Simon Gallup vs. Peter Hook

Hmmm....

I'd go to Peter Hook, cause not only did he come up with amazing stuff (Perfect Kiss), he also played on blue monday when he didn't have to, plus he looks cooler when he's all Viking Bass God with it down to his knees.

Viz (Viz), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Peter Hook by like, a jillion or so

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Monday, 20 June 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

peter hook because simon gallup basically just ripped him off, including the stance

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Hook, for sure.

Although, Simon Gallup is seriously underrated.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Simon certainly looks better at 45 than Peter did.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 20 June 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

peter hook vs everyone else in the universe: hooky still wins.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 20 June 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

plus: when i saw the cure, many years ago, gallup was sick and didn't turn up. so fat bob (which he most certainly was) played all his bass parts. i'd like to see barney do that.

(nb: this is more a reflection on barney, and also on the general aceness of fat bob, but hey.)

I once asked Robert Smith whether Simon got bored played the same notes over and over again for songs like "Disintegration." He (more or less) said the rest of the band kind of got tired of it, but that Simon loved it!

I like Simon but Hooky ruleth the land.

The Mad Puffin, Monday, 20 June 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Archangel Gabriel vs. Archangel Michael

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Hook!

daavid (daavid), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

This is like Sophie's Choice

I love Simon's look, and I suppose he's a fine bass player......but there is only ONE Peter Hook.

And as we all know......he is a god.
Peter Hook's Bass....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Hook all the way long. He even defined a sound. You know it's him whenever his making his way through his bass.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Monday, 20 June 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

ten months pass...
To me Simon first place, Peter Hook second place but with a picture finish

Paco Heres, Wednesday, 26 April 2006 03:28 (twenty years ago)

Hook, Hook, Hook, oh yeah, and Hook.

Edward Bax (EdBax), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 04:23 (twenty years ago)

This is like Bambi vs. Godzilla.

John Hunter, Wednesday, 26 April 2006 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Both men are key elements of two of my favourite bands ever, and I love them both. The fact that Peter Hook is held in much higher esteem by the average ILMer doesn't change the fact that Simon Gallup is also pretty great as well. The Hooky love runs so deep on this board that I think I even remember someone once trying to assert that the bassline for "All the Way" actually wasn't a blatant Cure rip-off. Simon doesn't stand a chance in such an environment.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 07:01 (twenty years ago)

J-rock is so OTM!

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 07:06 (twenty years ago)

Favourite Hooky bassline, anyone? At the moment, mine is "Weirdo"- ultra melodic, but it also propels the song along really well, and goes with Barney's guitar playing in a lovely fashion.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 07:11 (twenty years ago)

Yep, "All the Way" is "Just Like Heaven".

flowersdie (flowersdie), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 07:23 (twenty years ago)

Great Hooky moments :

1. Age of Consent
2. Ceremony - the 'watching for ever' bit
3. Waiting The Siren's Call - going from the chorus back into the verse the way the bass anchors the song is fantastic
4. Who's Joe - underneath the guitars in the chorus - beautiful
5. Your Silent Face - the bass run that ends with a very LOW note
6. Cries and Whispers - driving and melodic amid the gloom
7. As It Was When It Was - all of it
8. State Of Shock (Revenge) - during the 'fly me to the moon/let me see the stars bit'
9. Isolation - brutal

Could have picked any really.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 07:35 (twenty years ago)

Or the end of Regret, which is just about perfect.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 07:53 (twenty years ago)

It is.

Also the echoey, minimalist bass on Everything's Gone Green.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 08:34 (twenty years ago)

I think the best bass lines from Hook are Disorder, Love will tear us apart and She's Lost Control. From Gallup are, i think: Last Dance, Homesick, Fascination Street, Speak my Lenguage or The Lovecats

Hahahaha!

Statement: The sky is blue.
Average ILM'er: No, it's not.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Monday, 15 May 2006 05:04 (twenty years ago)

Hey, let's make a "UK vs USA" bass greats kinda thread

5 to 5, picking some big faves:

Peter Hook + Simon Gallup + David J + Steve Severin + Barry Adamson

Vs

Clint Conley + Kim Gordon + Kim Deal + Joe Lally + Vern Rumsey

Love'em all but I'd say there's a great supremacy from brits here, right?

demmis, Monday, 15 May 2006 06:19 (twenty years ago)
