Dag Nasty - can i say.. Classic or dud..?

I can't find a Dag Nasty thread anywhere on here so please discuss this particular album here.

I'd not listened to it in a few years until recently but i've been playing it once a day the past week or so. I think it's classic and the best harDCore record that doesn't involve Ian or Guy. Sure, it sounds naive, dated and a bit clunky but that's all part of it's charm, isn't it?

I never really liked any of their other records, though. Well, aside from the '85-'86 album/7" boxset with all the original versions of the "can i say" songs with Shawn Brown.

Thanks.

Seconding Field Day here. It's the only one I still have.

Lived in NoVa during high school, late 80s. Dag Nasty was pretty exciting live and when Can I Say? came out. "I've heard" still rocks on that one. I mean, Brian Baker from MT on guitar! Just recently discovered I still have the vinyl. Wig Out also, but that simply wasn't as good.

Never heard Field Day, but I always thought it was that Rites of Spring record that pre-dated all the 'emo-core.' And that still stands as a pretty powerful record in places. It's overwrought, but that was the point.

'For Want Of'

I bought Field Day, it's ok tossed most of it. Emo was already invented when that came out, Revolution Summer and all. That song from one of the earlier albusm on the Dischord Box Set kicks ass. I'm curious to hear more of the older stuff.

Yeah, the Rites Of Spring album was the first emo record in '85. After that you had this Dag Nasty in '86 then the Embrace album and the 7"s by the Hated and Moss Icon.

"Can i say" was a big influence on some of the 80s sXe New York bands, particuarly Gorilla Biscuits.

I'll have to dig "field day" out and give it another spin but i can't stand "wig out at denko's".

Worst band name ever.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

dude how could you not like "wig out at denkos"?!?!?!? it has the best emo rhyme ever: "hal's spilling/ malt liquor/ on his minor/ threat sticker"!!!!!!

other dude how could you not like the name dag nasty?!?!?!? nerd.

Some "punk" doods copied their Wig Out cassette for me at this guitar camp I went to....that and "Wonderful" the Cirlce Jerk's metal record....I have a major soft spot for Dag Nasty....

I've the DagNas quite a few times on the "who invented emo" threads.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

yeah you know what i mean

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Heh @ that lyric.

I hated "wig out.." because it was so over-produced.

Ellis From Die Hard, Monday, 20 June 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Overproduced? Nah.

Now, if you wanted to say Field Day was overproduced. . .I'd still disagree. I'd call it badly produced. The band (maybe Baker?) has admitted this.

JAS, Monday, 20 June 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

And I happen to like a lot of songs off that record. None of those "emo" bands supposedly influenced by them would be capable of writing a song like "Dear Mrs. Touma."

JAS, Monday, 20 June 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

weird, i was thinking about this record yesterday. not sure what made me think of it but i was trying to remember if i liked the shawn brown versions better. it sucks that they kicked him out but i guess he fit in with swiz better anyway.

swiz owned!!

paus, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

swiz might have owned if they'd booked time in a proper studio. i dunno know, i always wanted to love them but their sound always left me severely wanting.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

I always prefered the Fury "resurrection" 7" (Chris Thomson on vox with the 3 members of Swiz) to anything by Swiz.

Swiz were pretty good though. The "with dave" 7" that features Dave Smalley on bass was the best thing they did, i reckon.
