ummmm well I have sirius, and I like it. I had weighed each and from what I remember, there were definitely pros that were unique to each- extra-musical reasons as well:

For instance, if you like baseball, you might want to go with XM because they broadcast MLB games while Sirius has NFL and NBA (I think)

Musically, you may choose one dj over another- but the stations in general are similar.

YOu can listen to sirius for free online for 3 days I believe...

There are a few other threads that discuss this. To paraphrase what I said somewhere else, I had XM for a while and after the novelty wore off I hated it. It's like those music channels on your digital cable. Maybe it's better now, this was 2 yrs ago.

BBC Radio 1 is coming to Sirius in the autumn, and its night-time schedule is pretty great.

Mind you, you can listen to it for free online: www.bbc.co.uk/radio1

i have sirius and i find it really disappointing. they have terribly lame djs with terribly lame dj names, playlists (not as brutally tight as fm stations, but still more repetition than i'd like), and such. you get the sense too many fm types got hired and made sure it sounded real commercial even without ads. the most adventurous "indie" station they have is a channel called left of center, and when i had it on the other day, they played a new oasis track. so take from that what you will...

Sirius has Public Radio, which is unavailable ovet the air across much of the rural plains and the intermountain west.

XM is partnered up with Clear Channel. On the surface, that might be bad news. But it does offer XM the capability of broadcasting a lot of local market shows throughout the whole country.

Is that really worth supporting the evil Christian right and the homogenization of all music media?

Plus, Sirius will have Stern in a few months, so choose a side!

I find the audio quality to be pretty bad for both of them. It's like a bad mp3.

Much as I can't stand the evil christian right, I hate Stern too. So thats actually a strike against Sirius.

Ouch.
I guess I'll stick to my plan of building an in car mp3 system.

If there's a show I like where I'm living now, and I can still listen to it when I pick up and move across the country... then YES.

Stern sucks.

At my aunts house in NJ on her satellite TV Sirius actually IS the music channels. And Left of Center is awful.

There were a few okay ones - sometimes the Outlaw Country channel played some interesting stuff. The one meant for 80s "alternative" played something interesting once in a great while. By and large I would listen to the specific "80s" "70s" and "60s" channel.

I do remember that there was one channel just for Garage rock which seemed really weird to me. They played shit like the Mooney Suzuki but once in a while they'd go back and play some obscure garage band from the 60s. Oh and there was a channel explicitely for late 90s style rap-rock.

three years pass...

They are now one. And suck.

I've been a Sirius subscriber and lost channels yesterday. Yet my subscription fee stays the same. If I want to add the 7 XM channels they are offering me, it will be additional $4 a month.

This is bullshit.

I miss the pre-merger XM. Soul Street not Soul Town. High Standards not Siriusly Sinatra.

I am canceling my subscription. We've had it about three years and even own stock in this stupid-ass company. Fuck them.

five years pass...

Just got back from a 2 week roadtrip in a rental SUV, my first experience with XM Radio. Listened mainly to 50s on 5, which has too much Neil Sedaka for my tastes, and not enough rockabilly or R&B (they did play "Rang Tang Ding Dong (I'm The Japanese Sandman)" by The Chords, though!) and Willie's Roadhouse. The blues channel played a few good nuggets, but then would generally follow that up with some modern-day guitar histrionics and I'd have to change.

Caught a little Grateful Dead radio too, which prompts my question: Pearl Jam have a channel?! Really? I mean, I knew about the Elvis and Springsteen channels, but am genuinely surprised that PJ are that big a deal.

ILXor Some Dude to thread (he's a Pearl Jam fan )....

I listened to the Little Steven Underground Garage channel the last time I had a rental car with Sirius XM

Oh my word, this much-touted app upgrade is the hottest garbage.
