"Vapour Trail" by Rush VS "Vapour Trail" by Ride

I once accidentally downloaded the Rush song and thought "WOW i don't remember this song ever sounding this good". And i'm going to go with that judgement.

This Rush song fucking rules.

(NB: i may live to regret this thread)

yeah, but that Ride track is one of their best. I give it to them.

Hutlock (Hutlock), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

It was the song that got me interested in a new Rush release for the first time since I was 12 or so. It's great.

Never heard Ride. Do they sound similar at all?

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I love Rush, but in this instance I'm going with Ride.

Never heard Ride. Do they sound similar at all?

Not in the slightest.

When i thought that Rush's "Vapour Trail" was Ride it seemed to have a shoegaze quality to it though.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

Ride's "Vapour Trail" is genius. MBV wishes they wrote a song this good.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm going with Ride on this one.

Geddy's scree makes me want to stomp on puppies most of the time.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

Easy, this one goes to Ride.

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Ride

Case closed.

I haven't heard the Rush song but "Vapour Trail" is the best song Ride ever recorded (possible exception: "Leave Them All Behind") so I can't imagine that Rush's song could be better.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

The Rush song does have a shoegaze-ish quality to it, kind of. And Geddy's voice is really controlled and pretty-sounding on it. It's sort of sentimental but it's good if I'm in the mood.

I'll download the Ride tune.

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

(You know, in the way that U2 is shoegaze.)

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

...vs. Vapour Trails by the Tragically Hip

i'll still go with Ride.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

After two listens, I don't know that I really get the genius of the Ride song (and believe me, my IRC nick in Ottawa was "Loveless"). I don't mind it at all though. I'll keep it around. The string coda is a nice touch. Rush is definitely winning in the rhythm section department.

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, keep the Ride track in your rotation. It's a slow burner.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it might hit you a bit later, it really is a great song.

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

Since I was defending this song I thought I should play it again. It’s good but didn’t blow me over like I expected it to do and it’s not the best thing they have done, IMO. It does work much better when hearing the whole Nowhere album which i'm not doing right now.

"Taste" on the other hand, wow…

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

so, howabout Trespassers William?

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

Ride.

Vapour Trail never seems to be able to leave my head for very long. I always want to hear it. It captures a time period for me.

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

ride

damn thing's perfect

RIDE AND RIDE AND RIDE

i mean, really.

leonard (tk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Ride - it's a perfect shoegazing paean, it captures the time and the approach with utter clarity. And the guitar at the beginning is just euphoric.

i share these suspicions. i haven't heard the ride song.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 23 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

I've heard both, and yes, the Rush track is one of their better tunes for sure, but the Ride cut is still better to me.

I actually interviewed Geddy Lee a few years back and he was a very very nice, intelligent guy. And a big baseball historian! Seriously!

Hutlock (Hutlock), Thursday, 23 June 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Ride. (not that I know anything by Rush)
