Sometimes I think it's their best.
Sometimes I think it's their worst.

and also, do you preffer sonic's or jason's side?

That One Guy (That One Guy), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

Sonic's. It's their worst.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

definitely sonic's side. i heart "big city"..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

i love it. one of the best CDs that i own. and it has been for years. it's the one that i listen to the most out of all the spacemen 3 stuff. and i love it all. never cared much for jason's stuff after the first spiritualized album, but i dig almost everything that sonic has done since recurring.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Sonic. It's their worst.

Not only that, Jason's side is pretty bad for the most part, and based on his songs here, I would have never guessed that he'd go on to achieve such genius with Spiritualized.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

classic. especially sonic's side. "big city" is probably my favorite spacemen 3 song.

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

OK I put this on and "I Love You" is brilliant, "Set Me Free/I've Got The Key" foreshadows both the Sonic of "How You Satisfy Me" and of "Help Me Please" (both of whom I love, I'm such a sucker), and "Set Me Free (Reprise)" is twee as fuck!!

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

"i think it's gonna end pretty soon [chuckle]"

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

I like both sides and make sure you get the extended full version of the album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

does anyone know what Sonic thinks of "Big City?" I seem to remember him slagging it off in an interview -- confirm?

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

sonic's side is best and it is their best album. although jason obviously got much better. sonic never did really even if i love 'highs lows and heavenly blows'.

'this chord's for you', i always loved that.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

I like Jason's side more, but I like it throughout.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Great record. Both sides of it. "Perfect Prescription" remains my favorite, but really, I've never understood why people don't (universally) love it.

Dark Horse, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

Great record, but not as good as the other three proper studio LPs (i.e nothing as good as "Hey Man", "Walkin' With Jesus", or "Revolution"). Weird that people love it so much, I guess the side/personality division kills it for me. "Why Couldn't I See" fries me every time, though.

Verdict: pretty much classic.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

Not their best album - that's probably "Playing With Fire" - though Sonic's side really is the best music he ever made, and if I ignore Jason's stuff (it's nice but not mindblowing) I sometimes think 'maybe this is Sp3's best...'

I really, really wish Sonic would start writing songs again. This record alongside his solo "Spectrum" LP and the Spectrum "Soul Kiss" album & satellite singles are the best things he did...

jon dale, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

I love both sides. It's funny the way people talk about how different Jason Spaceman's side is from his later stuff with Spiritualized. They sound remarkably similar to me. I never really listened to Spritualized that much, it all kind of sounded the same -- nice enough but all sounding like one really looong gospel song that he didn't know how to end. His songs on Recurring are shorter and more seems to be happening in them in a shorter span of time, so they stick out a little more to me, I guess. I guess what I mean to say is, what the hell is wrong with the way "Feel So Sad" segues into the second song on that side, it's totally breathtaking?!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

(Of course, maybe Spiritualized albums are loaded with these moments, I have no idea)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

It's my least favorite of theirs. I like Jason's side.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

the middle 8) (ie 'When Tomorrow Hits'. was that on the vinyl? which side?)

then jason's side.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Sonic. My least favourite. I need to replace The Perfect Prescription - the cd's totally fucked.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

Sonic, natch, but ... he's supposedly working on a new, song-based Spectrum LP.

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Right on the very edge of being classic. If they had worked together and spent more time on the album I think it could have been totally awesome. I've never liked "I Love You" mainly because of the lyrics and the "this chord is for you" bit. I don't think that the expanded version adds anything significant. My favorite song from Recurring is "Big City," although I prefer Jason's side. How can any of ya'll deny the majesty that is "Feelin' Just Fine (Head Full Of Shit)?" This song cranked up on headphones is simply breath taking. Maybe "Big City" isn't my fave song....
1. Perfect/Forged Prescription
2. Playing With Fire
3. Recurring
4. Sound of Confusion/Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To
5. All that other stuff

And Jason stomps all over Sonic.

Joseph B. Cowart (flamingrev), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

I agree with the assessment that "Feeling Just Fine (head full of shit)" is the best song on this album. I listen to this one waaay less than the others, my favorites are Taking Drugs and Live in Europe, I think. So I guess it would make sense that Recurring is my least favorite. But I really love early Spiritualized. Well, I used to...

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Some great tunes -- "Big City" and "Hypnotized" and "When Tomorrow Hits" are all amazing, as is "Feeling Just Fine." The rest of it just sorta sits there though, neiother good nor bad to me, so i couldn't go so far as to call it a great album, though I do play it fairly often. I guess it would be my least favorite then, as I can play all the other albums straight through, no problem. And I guess in a pinch, I'd pick Jason's side, just because Sonic's is slightly more repetitive.

And I second Ned's comment about needing to have the expanded version of this! The shortened US release just doesn't do it.

Hutlock (Hutlock), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

It's funny the way people talk about how different Jason Spaceman's side is from his later stuff with Spiritualized

I agree. "Hypnotized" is my favorite thing on the album and one of my top 5 Spacemen tracks.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Jason's Side.

Perfect Prescription is their best...IMHO.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Totally classic. My favorite side is whichever one I'm listening to at the moment.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

I am glad that some other people on this thread shared the love for "Hypnotised" which is one of my fave S3 songs ever.

If I had to choose, I would probably (shock! horror!) go with Jason's side, because it's just slightly more bubblegum. But luckily I've got it on CD now so I don't have to.

A YouTube dive led me to a couple of inputs for Big City as well the fact it made a Simpsons appearance a few years ago. The other one being the Electric Prunes - Big City.

Probably an uncredited Ken Elliot on Moog as it's very much in the style of the contemporaneous Vulcans - Star Trek record.

Main riff is copped from the Wailers Mr. Brown iirc?

Οὖτις, Saturday, 8 December 2018 20:13 (seven years ago)

I got rid of this in the early 90s. Thought it was dud. Haven't heard it since then. Maybe I should give it another go

Is the heavily processed "Oh Let Good Times Roll" vocal line in "Big City" a Cars sample?

Don't think so... it just sounds like Sonic's voice to me.

Kim Kimberly, Thursday, 20 April 2023 23:27 (two years ago)

It's definitely Sonic's - it's just heavily processed.

Spacemen 3 were like LCD Soundsystem: constantly taking other people's stuff, changing it a little and claiming it as their own.

That Missing Scientists track is great!

Cow_Art, Friday, 21 April 2023 12:57 (two years ago)

Reason why I asked is I was re-listening to PKember's virtual DJ show on WFMU from the early pandemic days and sure enough he played a Cars track (diff tho, "Best Friend's Girl) right before Electric Prune's "Big City". After listening to S3's "Big City" very loudly the other day, I though it might have been a sample in retrospect.

Kim Kimberly, Friday, 20 October 2023 20:11 (two years ago)

Kim Kimberly, Friday, 20 October 2023 20:22 (two years ago)

oh I did not realize it wasn't on the OG LP as well. in that case I am glad SV subbed in the long 12" Big City but still wish they had done a 2LP or something

the cd is my fave S3. or the one i've played the most by a country mile. love it to death backward and forward.

scott seward, Saturday, 21 October 2023 00:04 (two years ago)

Feelin' Just Fine is wonderful. It's a great album and flows pretty well considering the circumstances.

Cow_Art, Saturday, 21 October 2023 00:43 (two years ago)

This was hard to find on cd in the late 90s compared to the other albums, I had really built it up in my mind as the ultimate epic perfect Spacemen 3 album before hearing it.

wait what? oh it wasn't on the original LP? this was actually my first S3 album, bought the CD without ever hearing a note of their music when I was about 15 just based on what I'd read about it. it's a long CD so I guess I assumed it was a double LP, didn't realise it had a different track list.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 21 October 2023 01:45 (two years ago)

It would be awesome if their label troubles were sorted and they could do proper reissues with Sonic’s participation.

Is Forged Prescriptions still available? Man, that was fucking great. That extra hazy Walking With Jesus. Sigh.

Cow_Art, Saturday, 21 October 2023 02:13 (two years ago)

weren't there different perfect prescriptions too? i remember having a tape of it and someone said it was the "good one". is it like the standing on a beach kinda thing. extra songs? i could look on discogs but i'm sleeeeepy.

Bonus tracks on three cd versions:

1) "Soul 1" and "That's Just Fine"

2) "Starship" and "Rollercoaster"

3) "Soul 1", "That's Just Fine", "Starship", "Ecstasy"

Is Forged Prescriptions still available?

It's available on Bandcamp (digital only though): https://spacemen3.bandcamp.com/album/forged-presciptions

Of the multiple versions of Perfect Prescription out there, I'd consider "the good one" to be the intial Fire Records CD release from 1989 that has the extra tracks from the "Take Me To The Other Side" single: "Soul 1" & "That's Just Fine." To my ears (and I've spent years on all of these) I think it's the closest to the original Glass vinyl release. The Taang CD sounds too brittle to my ears and subsequent Fire CD and vinyl releases suffer from the same issues of little/no re-mastering and substandard vinyl. I'm format-agnostic, but I felt bad for the folks who spent $$$ on that clusterfuck of new Spiritualized vinyl.

If I had a zillion dollars I'd give Sonic, Jason, and the whole Rugby crew to finally buyback their stuff from crooked t-shirt salesmen all the way to Beggars Banquet so everything could finally get off those moldy 8 and 16 track tapes from VHF and elsewhere so real remasters can be made.

I remember when I downloaded a ripped Perfect Prescription copy of the Taang release and there was terrible cut/scratch in one of the early tracks that I was certain had to have been due to the mp3 rip. Then I bought the actual release and found out nope!

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Saturday, 21 October 2023 06:33 (two years ago)

Isn't there a gap between ecstasy symphony and transparent radiation where there shouldn't be?

Cow_Art, Saturday, 21 October 2023 12:16 (two years ago)

that Taang release always baffled me. they could've put the entire 11+ minute version of "starship" on there but put some weirdly edited version on it. thumbs down!

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Saturday, 21 October 2023 18:11 (two years ago)

but I felt bad for the folks who spent $$$ on that clusterfuck of new Spiritualized vinyl

what was this about?

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Sunday, 22 October 2023 02:53 (two years ago)

I just assumed it was like any reissue of basically anything.

I keep pointing this out - I follow a hardcore punk label based in London - they consistently put out great albums and reissues around £12-20. these people are putting out records on tiny runs of 100-500etc and they can make it work for £12-20. there is no reason for any record to cost over £20.

I don't really like Spiritualized tbh

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 22 October 2023 03:09 (two years ago)

i like the first spiritualized album a lot. maybe cuz it still has the S3 magic.

scott seward, Sunday, 22 October 2023 03:15 (two years ago)

i was just talking about this label on another thread today. i like what they put out a lot. ambient stuff. their records are so pretty and they sound awesome and they always retail for 18-20 and they are all limited. they started out as a minidisc label!

https://www.discogs.com/release/3953326-Spacemen-3-The-Perfect-Prescription

I think Genius' version is from Glass' tapes. It's the original version, but doesn't quite have the haziness (and more appropriate bonus tracks) of the original Fire CD.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 25 October 2023 02:56 (two years ago)

I just assumed it was like any reissue of basically anything.

Pretty much. Here's the relevant URL, only a modest 35 pages. Still, enter if you dare. The domain name should be warning enough
https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/spiritualized-2021-reissues.1062452/

tl;dr - Hoffman thread of Spiritualized collectors who "gotta have their Spiritualized vinyl" like it was a fucking Batman special, discover that the vinyl is warped and noisy as hell, but continue to buy them because they "gotta have their Spiritualized vinyl"

til;dr - Lazed Guided Melodies is a perfect 61 minute album in one long rush and come down. It's a perfect album. There's no reason to make it worse and inconvenient when you can get the CD for a couple of bucks.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 25 October 2023 03:16 (two years ago)
