Help me with a mix- your favorite hip hop/rap songs from 1981, 1983, 1990, 1994?

I need a bit of help with a mix CD I'm making for my best friend. It started off when I made a mix CD for him to take on a drive to SF with The Message and Summertime on it, and he said that it would be an even better mix with some more old rap songs on it. So I started collecting some old ones that I loved & realized that I had roughly one for every year from 1980 to 1993. I tacked on 1994 as well for the competely arbitrary reason that I probably have room on a CDR for one from that year, since I'm at 58 minutes right now.

So help me out- do I have songs in the wrong years? Suggestions for better songs for some of these years? What about the years I'm missing ones from?

1980 Rapper's Delight - The Sugarhill Gang
1981 ??
1982 The Message - Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel & The Furious Five
1983 ??
1984 Sucker M.C.'s -Run-DMC
1985 Rock the Bells- LL Cool J
1986 Slow and Low- Beastie Boys
1986 Walk This Way - Joe Perry, Run-DMC & Steven Tyler
1987 Dedication to all the B-Boys - Schoolly D
1988 Microphone Fiend- Eric B. & Rakim
1988 Rebel Without a Pause- Public Enemy
1989 Hey Ladies- Beastie Boys
1990 ??
1991 Summertime - DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
1992 Nuthin' but a "G" Thang- N.W.A.
1993 Who Am I? (Whats My Name) - Snoop Dogg
1994 ???

1994: Juicy - Notorious B.I.G.
1990: P.E. - Welcome to the Terrordome (or if you dont want to use two PE tracks, I'd go with The Humpty Dance)

1991: Summertime is great, but that's also the year "My Mind is Playin Tricks on Me" came out.

And since you already have the Beasties twice, I would replace "Hey Ladies" with "So Watcha Sayin"

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

'81. Funky Four + One - "That's the Joint"
'83. Newcleus - "Jam On It"
'90. N.W.A. - "100 Miles and Runnin'"
'94. So many great ones to choose from (one of the all-time great years for rap), but I'll go with Craig Mack's "Flava in Ya Ear"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

"Rapper's Delight" was '79. Therefore, 1980 has GOT to be "Double Dutch Bus" by Frankie Smith.

1990: Digital Underground - "Doowutchyalike!"
1994: Warren G - "Regulate (Jamming mix)"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

1979 Rapper's Delight - The Sugarhill Gang (when it came out)
1980 Kurtis Blow - The Breaks
1981 That's the Joint - Funky Four + One
1982 The Message - Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel & The Furious Five
1982 Planet Rock - Bam/Soulsonic Force
1983 Sucker M.C.'s - Run-DMC (when it came out as a single)
1983 It's Like that - Run DMC (the b-side: the single of the year)
1984 Roxanne Roxanne - UTFO
1985 Rock the Bells- LL Cool J (the same year Slow & Low came out)
1985 The Show - Doug E Fresh & Slick Rick
1985 La Di Dodi - Doug E Fresh & Slick Rick
1986 Peter Piper - Run DMC (fuck that Aerosmith/Rick Rubin cover)
1986 My Melody - Eric B & Rakim
1987 Rebel Without a Pause - Public Enemy (the year it came out)
1988 Don't Believe the Hype - Public Enemy
1988 Follow the Leader - Eric B & Rakim
1989 It's Funky Enough - D.O.C.
1990 Welcome to the Terrordome - Public Enemy
1991 The Choice is Yours - Black Sheep
1992 They Want EFX - Das EFX (that flow affected everyone!)
1993 Protect Ya Neck - Wu Tang Clan
1993 Who Got da Props - Black Moon
1994 Flava in Ya Ear - Craig Mack

And 'G Thang' was Dre featuring Snoop. NWA had broken up by that point.

1980 has GOT to be The Breaks by Kurtis Blow.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

1990: Candyman - "Knockin' Boots"

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

(I was going to say "The Choice is Yours" is 1992, since that's when the single was released, but it looks like the album came out in 1991.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

Mmmm. Love "Slow and Low." "You ought to be able/To dance to your record/When it's on the turntable!"

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Shit, you're right...it was originally released in 1991!

Also, it is probably mandatory for Jam on It to be jammed on it.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Woops...I confused myself twice over regarding Black Sheep...that wasn't a smarmy response to you.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

Re "The Choice is Yours": It's gotta be the "revisited" version -- it's better, and that one was the single, right?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was just sorta thinking to myself there, PW -- didn't mean to confuse you!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

83: Captain Rapp "Bad Times (I Can't Stand It)"
90: A Tribe Called Quest "Description Of A Fool"

(Newcleus's "Jam On It" was 1984, actually)

I love ILM- post a dumb question, go walk your dog, come back to a lot of good suggestions.

So far I've moved 'Rapper's Delight' to 1979, 'Sucker MCs' to 1983, & added 'The Breaks', 'Roxanne Roxanne', 'That's the Joint' (holy Paul's Boutique samples), and '100 Miles and Runnin'...which I hadn't heard in ages, nice catch.

90: A Tribe Called Quest "Description Of A Fool"
Sadly I forgot to note that I'm allerigic to A Tribe Called Quest. I break out in hives or something when I'm forced to listen to them.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

we forgot one 1990 hit -- "HAMMER TIME!"

Early electro fits under hip hop, right? If it does, then my favourite song from 1983 is actually "We Are the Jonzun Crew" by Jonzun Crew.

Rick Rubin and Jazzy Jay recorded and released this soley as Def Jam in 1983, which was picked up and rereleased by Arthur Baker on Partytime in 1984. This is the first bass record ever (proto-bass).

Rick followed this with other proto-bass tracks, infuencing the genre to form:

Run DMC - Together Forever (live '84)
Beastie Boys - Slow & Low (1985)
LL Cool J - Dear Yvette (1985)
LL Cool J - You'll Rock (1985)
LL Cool J - Rock the Bells (remix)(1985)

Mantronix had a few proto-bass records in 85 too.

Still within a 3 minute overburn? I say go for it!
No, I'm way over! 1:35:32. Thanks to the great suggestions, I've added a couple more. So apologies for the years in the middle, I can't get itunes to move that column over to the far left. This is what I have at the moment:

Rapper's Delight - The Sugarhill Gang - 1979 - 5:03
The Breaks - Kurtis Blow - 1980 - 7:39
That's the Joint - Funky Four Plus One - 1981 - 9:23

C.R.E.A.M. - Wu-Tang Clan - 1993 - 4:10

Making Cash Money - Busy Bee
I'd never heard this before- that's a really good one. Nice.

Nuthin' but a "G" Thang - Dre & Snoop Dogg - 1992 - 4:09
The general consensus was that this isn't NWA, so I updated it.

Walk This Way is gone- cute song, but between that & the other 1986 song I had, Slow & Low, it was no contest. I'm not averse to more than one song per year, but that's where I'm looking first to shorten it. I'm putting this on my ipod & I'll listen to it today & see what I think of all of them tonight.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

1990 has got to be either Brand Nubian or Ice Cube

perhaps you should stop at 1993? '94 was a whole new ball game post 36 Chambers

xpost

Slow and Low - Beastie Boys - 1986

I still have to insist (nitpick) that this was 1985...it was the b-side to 'She's On It' (from the Krush Groove sdtk). It was also originally a Run DMC track that they threw away, so Beastie's just walked in and redid the vocals.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

So this ended up being a 2 CD project, 1979 - 1989 and 1990 - 1999. The second CD was near impossible to assemble because I had way too many ideas about what to put in. I only really started listening to rap in summer 1994, so the earlier years were easier because I was less familiar with them, and it was easier to track down a few songs that I knew and suggestions from this thread and toss them on and move on. From 1993 to 1998- yikes. I left off a lot of songs that I adore, and I know I entirely missed some artists (Eminem stands out the most to me). 1994 I really ended up agonizing over- too much good stuff came out then. 1999 was easier, I started my job that year and I missed almost everything except the Dre album. So my favorite 3 tracks from this right now- The Message, Fantastic Voyage and O.P.P (total fucking genius song).

1979 - 1989
Rapper's Delight - The Sugarhill Gang - 1979
The Breaks - Kurtis Blow - 1980
That's the Joint - Funky Four Plus One - 1981
Making Cash Money - Busy Bee - 1982
The Message Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel & The Furious Five - 1982
Sucker M.C.'s (Krush-Groove 1) - Run-DMC - 1983
Boogie Down Bronx - Man Parrish - 1984
Roxanne, Roxanne - UTFO - 1984
Rock the Bells - LL Cool J - 1985
Slow and Low - Beastie Boys - 1986
Rebel Without a Pause - Public Enemy - 1987
Dedication to all the B-Boys - Schoolly D - 1987
Microphone Fiend - Eric B. & Rakim - 1988
Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun - Beastie Boys - 1989
75 minutes

1990 - 1999
100 Miles and Runnin' - N.W.A. - 1990
O.P.P. - Naughty By Nature - 1991
It Was a Good Day - Ice Cube - 1992
C.R.E.A.M. - Wu-Tang Clan - 1993
Who Am I? (Whats My Name) - Snoop Dogg - 1993
Fantastic Voyage - Coolio - 1994
NY State of Mind - Nas -1994
Protect Ya Neck - Wu-Tang Clan - 1994
Survival of the Fittest - Mobb Deep - 1995
Real Hip-Hop - Das Efx - 1995
California Love - TuPac & Dr. Dre - 1996
Pony - Ginuwine - 1996
Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See - Busta Rhymes - 1997
Los Angeles Times - Endo, Xzibit - 1997
Nigga What, Nigga Who (Originator 99) - Jay-Z - 1998
Still D.R.E. - Dr. Dre - 1999
68 minutes
