Greetings, all-

I'm working on a bio of Modest Mouse for St. Martin Press, which should hopefully be released in fall, 2006, and I need all the help I can get. So if you have something book-worthy to share about Isaac and the band, drop me a note at modestmousebook2005@hotmail.com. I'm also looking for quality pix for the photo spread. I look forward to hearing from everybody!

best,
alan

Other than a friend giving a very drunken Brock a solid kick to the ass at some stupid popfest in Athens back in 2000, I know absolutely nothing interesting about this band.

I think they are on a major label and they drink beer and they are Jehovah Witnesses and they make vinyl as well as cd formats and they have some success in the smaller markets and they are known to shop at "health" food dtores and the one guy with the lisp can gargle without taking a breath

"which chapter will be entitled "rape"?
-- cutty (holle...), June 23rd, 2005."

I'm asking this seriously - isn't the story that he was accused of rape, and then the accuser quickly dropped the charges and he was cleared of everything? Just seems like it would suck to have to walk around with people calling you a rapist if you truly did nothing wrong.

Are you going to talk about the part where they sound like Built to Spill, but not really, because those guys are old?

This is the trolley which was the site and source of Modest Mouse's initial presence. The riders enjoyed the trolley-side entertainment...

Modest Mouse have modest feet, especially with all that touring! Thank heavens there's a fine establishment to provide comfort for those poor soles.

jon, did you read the thread?

even considering this theory, wouldn't there still be a chapter on this incident in a proper biography?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 23 June 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

Cutty, no. But there's some interview I think on pf0rk that has him talking about it.

Ultragrill (ex machina), Thursday, 23 June 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

i don't know if you guys know about it, but this guy was charged with rape once

Well, there's two sides. The Stranger famously published a very poorly researched article that more or less accused him of rape, and then retracted it after the Murder City Devils and their people denied a bunch of claims from the original article. In fact, one of the MCD people claimed that there was absolutely no way it could have happened because she was sleeping on the floor like five feet away.

On the flip side, my friend Larry (of a million punk bands from Seattle and Oakland) claims that he knows this girl very well, and that she isn't a liar, and that she still maintains that it happened.

All I can say for sure is that I hate this band's music.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 23 June 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

i was once a friend of the girl in question. I've also met Isaac once as well.. though it was more of a "hey there" type of thing and that's it. They are both cool people.

from closest accounts.. two people were drunk... and there were no witnesses, but something happened. was it "rape" or not? no one will a) ever tell, b) never know, and/or c) want to just fucking move on. when the stranger article first popped up, all of a sudden, there was a sharp chasm in the seattle hipster/indie scene at the time.. PFFFT.. parted like the red sea better than 1000 moseses. So people have their theories, but nothing can be proven. And now the stranger has been suckling the mouse teat ever since... (last time they got a main story that is.)...

Personally, the whole "rape" thing was old five years ago, and it's kinda stupid to keep perpetuating it, since the above has already been told a gazillion times..

donut e-go (donut), Thursday, 23 June 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

Their music rapes my ears.

also the drummer's "issues" ...

Do tell.

Ultragrill (ex machina), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

Hi, all-

Glad to see the debate has been stirred up.

I'm absolutely going to address the rape accusations, as well as the DUI charge that landed Isaac in jail for a week-and-a-half. I want this to be an evenhanded book, showing the good and the bad.

And again, feel free to contact me directly at modestmousebook2005@hotmail.com

Thanks!
alan

Also, I like how they're all kind of ugly looking.

Their SNL performance of "Float On" boasted the most off-key backing vocal I have ever heard in my life (courtesy of the tall thin dude).

That guy sang on Beck's One Foot In The Grave, didn't he? On "Forcefield" and some others.

i had heard from a reliable source that the drummer was booted out because he was a pill popping, paranoid, delusional, schizophrenic, suicidal freak that did some crazy shit to himself & others. i guess once MM took off w/ "Float On" he cleaned up and was brought back.

jugg (tk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Was your reliable source Magnet? Because that's pretty much what they said.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

..and I think Magnet is at least partially full of shit.
