SFA - Storybook DVD

I know.. another SFA thread..

but I picked up this DVD cheap the other day, and I have to say: out of the 20-odd songs on this, not one of the videos suck.. at all. Some of them are "eh, alright", but I wouldn't turn them off. And many of them are absolutely amazing! ("Do Or Die", "Northern Lites", "(Drawing) Rings Around The World", "Is It The End Of The World As We Know It?", "Juxtaposed With U" (even though I like the RATW DVD version better, with the paper mache costumes.), and a few others.) I don't think that's ever happened to a DVD music video collection I've picked up from ANY band ever... (in fact, as much as I love the Rings Around The World CD, I think that DVD is very spotty even.)

Dare I say, I think this is a great example of a band with better videos than songs?

Somehow I had missed this was out! A must get item, surely.

It's a great video, but uh, no... their songs destroy their videos. I'm not really fond of any of the videos, honestly.

Replace "video" with "dvd". The Songbook DVD is worth it for the documentary; the videos are just an added bonus.

You're telling me "If You Don't Want Me To Destroy You" and "God Show Me Magic" are watchable? I cringe watching them and I LOVE SFA. :)

But it is a great DVD and I liked the little on the road doc. I hadn't seen most of their videos before so it was a cool collection.

Actually, I found "American Sasquatch" really unwatchable and boring...(though a friend of mine is in the L.A. footage, haha.)

"God Show Me Magic" and "If You Don't Want Me To Destroy You" were just "hey, let's make a video this weekend" type jaunts. Sounds watchable to me. Revelatory? Hardly. But the animations done in "The End Of The World As We Know it?" (kinda Brothers Quayish), and "Do Or Die" were excellent... I want to watch them NOW.

I'm not saying any of these videos are the accolades of the highest video art... I'm just saying Storybook is one of the most solid music video collection DVDs I've ever seen. I can't say the same about the ones I have for New Order, The Smiths, Soft Cell, Stereolab, or even Prince.

And this:

Dare I say, I think this is a great example of a band with better videos than songs?

..was worded very badly. I was just trying to say SFA seem more comfortable as a multimedia band than as a BAND band.. that was my main point.

donut e-goo (donut), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Well yeah, the videos have been implemented into their live shows for a while now. They're definitely into the whole multimedia thing.

The "If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You" video is hilarious. They look like a boy band. "Demons" even more so, with Gruff on a balcony looking off into the distance.

gorge (gorge), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Do most boy bands shoot videos in Colombia, though? (maybe so.. shrug)

donut e-goo (donut), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I'm just saying. Gruff and the others are pretty much my favorite people in any band.

gorge (gorge), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

SFA ARE a boy band though.. kinda. It's why I like them more than "authentic college rock" bands, generally speaking. Making a video where the band members play a video game then BECOME the video game is the ultimate boy band video! ("Play It Cool")
