New Order- "Best Remixes"

Right, so there's this thing up on the iTunes store today:

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=71976055

A compilation of New Order remixes past and present. Now, I love New Order to death, but my knowledge of b-sides, remixes and anything even slightly obscure stops at the Substance comp. So, are any of these worth bothering with? I know "Perfecto" means "Paul Oakenfold" means "Shitty trance to avoid like the plague," but the clips of the other tracks are far too short to tell...

Telephonething, Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

can you c&p the list? If you're not an itunes user, you can't see it.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Some of these mixes are indeed amazing.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

I was about to say, hm! V. tempting!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Blue Monday (88 12" Mix)
True Faith (The Morning Sun Extended Remix)

Bizarre Love Triangle (Shep's Extended Dance Mix)

these are all pretty great, the rest I haven't heard or are unremarkable.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

how much for the whole thing via iTMS?

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

$9.99

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

SWEET

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

no fire island mix of regret = no point.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

oh, and "this item is not available to UK iTMS customers", apparently.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Why would they choose the 12" remix of "Round and Round" instead of one of the Kevin Saunderson remixes?

I've heard many of those and they are all very good for the most part ... in particular, the video version of "Perfect Kiss" is a very interesting find.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

but it's on retro! well: on the rarities disc, anyway. which i assume means it's all over sl$k etc too?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

I *love* the Fire Island mix of "Regret." I would listen to it more if the original wasn't so perfect.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the Fire Island "Regret" is fantastic.

Wasn't the "Perfect Kiss" video version available on the Retro bonus disc?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't the "Perfect Kiss" video version available on the Retro bonus disc?

I made a poor choice of words ... I didn't mean that it was impossible to find, rather, it's an unexpected inclusion on a comp like this (and it is somewhat rare, hence, its appearance on the rarities disc on the box set).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

MORE COWBELL!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

MORE CASH-IN BORING CRAP FOR A BAND THAT HAS BEEN REDUNDANT FOR NEARLY AS LONG AS THE WURLITZER!

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

It's like N.O. is your anti-Killing Joke in terms of Alex in NYC commitment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

NYC-style commitment I should say.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

Paul, do you never listen to anything even you consider "redundant"??

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

I have the Perfect Kiss video version on a Qwest promo 12". Don't know if that's rare. Also recently got a weird comp called New Order In Order, an orange 12" that came out just before Regret I think. Its from 1993 and says "COMING SOON! The new single due in early March from the forthcoming New Order album due in April". Then there's a sticker that says "The new single, "Regret" now due in early April." The tracks are Blue Monday, Age of Consent, The Perfect Kiss 12" version, Bizarre Love Triangle (ext. dance mix), True Faith Morning Sun Extended REmix and Round and Round 12" version. It's pretty handy to not have to carry copies of all those 12"s. I'd never seen it anywhere before

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 23 June 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Ned's right. New Order are my personal bugbear. I just fucking hate 'em...apologies for pointless posts taking up space, but...I can't hold back!

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

How can they not put the Pump Panel mix of 'Confusion' on this? It's been ripped off nearly as much as 'Blue Monday'.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

hmm. they could've put the short version of temptation on there at least - or some new fangled version. ho hum.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

jesus no. not another version of temptation. i have hard drives full to bursting with nothing but versions of temptation.

[/exaggeration]

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 23 June 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

1. Normally Perfecto screams "RUN AWAY" but Oakenfuckers mix of World is excellent.
2. The 12" mix of Round & Round is the definitive version of the song. The intro is simply fantastic and outshines Saundersons mix. Not as sexy to like a remix that wasn't done in detroit but the 12" mix is better
3. The video version of Perfect Kiss on Retro's bonus disc was an edit of the full length video version as found only on the US promo for PK as mentioned upthread. This is the first time a digital copy of the full length version has been released.
4. The Pump Panel mix of COnfusion sucks.
5. New ORder - IN ORDER was also released on CD (for those fans in Seattle, Everyday Music has a used copy on CD for 10bucks. I got mine cheaper but it is a fantastic rarity with 7 or 8 great tracks in a row, very tidy little comp. Get it NOW!
6. I want the Orange Vinyl, have many New Order and related goodies to trade.

are you sure it's an edit? the version on my iPod is a staggering 9'56" long ...

that said: it claims to be "The Perfect Kiss (live take recorded at video shoot)", which suggests it's not exactly the same version that's in the video. mind you, given the NO tradition of mislabelling everything, this doesn't mean very much.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 23 June 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I've only seen the video for TPK twice, but I really don't see it as being that different from the recorded version--the only discernable difference I could tell was Barney playing the cowbell at the song's climax.

Which I mean is cool and all, but I don't get the Holy Grail status some seem to give it.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 23 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

i am absolutely positive the version on Retro is not the same as the 12" mix. There are 2 video's too. One is the full length 9+mins and the other an edit appx. 5mins. I'm almost certain they are different takes too, and not just edits of the same take.

biZ, Thursday, 23 June 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

the Holy Grail status isn't really for the video but rather the rare US Promo 12" with the video version. The video is adored because it shows the band performing one of their trademark songs live in the studio. There are the old NO/JD posters on the wall, Gillian's lovely face turning nobs (ouch!) and making frogs sing, Hooky's black leather jacket and Bernard's coy smile even after JonDemme gave them specific instructions to not look at the camera. TPK is probably my fav. New Order video along with Confusion because it shows the band at a critical time in their development.

biz, Thursday, 23 June 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

I dunno I guess I just like my New Order videos with lots of flashing pictures, irrelevant dialogue and ill-conceived symbolism.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 23 June 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

you seem like a real Up person.

biz, Thursday, 23 June 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

is that from anything, does anyone know?

I hope not. What a great thing that'd be to have on your resume.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 23 June 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

isn't it from "salvation"?

as for the PK video: it's a thing of awesome beauty. it was seeing the video (on neworderstory) that really made me realise what a fucking astonishing song it is; perhaps it's a trick of the mind, then, that i think that version is somehow better. to my ears it somehow sounds more muscular.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 23 June 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

isn't it from "salvation"?

shit, that'd make sense, huh? Forgot about that whole thing.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 23 June 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

So I have both those rarities mentioned above! hooray for my New Order collection.

The Perfect Kiss video I have is on the Substance VHS, and it's def. not 9 minutes long. Maybe 5 or so, maybe more. The Qwest promo 12" version I THINK is 8 plus minutes long, I'll have to check.

The orange vinyl New Order In Order I bought recently from voice/new yorker writer Vince Aletti.

Salvation was directed by Beth B, the Bizarre Love Triangle video was directed by Robert Longo. They are both downtown NYC 80s art scenesters. My forthcoming Crazy Rhythms mix CD has a killer track from a soundtrack called Vortex released by Beth and Scott B, feat. Adele Bertai, Lydia Lunch, Richard Edson and other post-no wave folks. I've never seen the movie, and the soundtrack, despite having some of my all-time favorite bands on their(New Order AND the Cabs!) isn't that great and is pretty common.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 23 June 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

To get back to the album, here are some track times:

1. Jetstream (Richard X Remix) 7:42
2. Krafty (DJ Dan Vocal Remix) 8:18
3. Crystal (John Creamer and Stephane K Main Remix) 11:25
You have to buy the whole album to get this.
4. Spooky (Out Of Order Mix) 6:20
5. World (Perfecto Mix) 7:28
Also on _(the rest of) New Order_
6. Ruined in a Day (Reunited in a Day Remix) 6:14
7. Regret (New Order Mix) 5:12
8. World In Motion (Carabinieri mix) 5:53
9. Round and Round (Kevin Saunderson 12" Mix) 6:48
iTMS is lying; it's the 12" version mixed by Ben Grosse, and neither Saunderson's
Detroit nor Club mix.
10. Fine Time (Steve 'Silk' Hurley Remix) 6:16
11. Blue Monday '88 (12" Version) 7:07
12. True Faith (The Morning Sun Extended Remix) 9:01
same as (Shep Pettibone Remix) on _(the rest of) New Order_
13. Bizarre Love Triangle (Shep's Extended Dance Mix) 6:42
same as versions on _Substance_ and _International_
14. State of the Nation 6:32
15. The Perfect Kiss (Live Version from Video) 5:14
16. Here To Stay (Felix Da Housecat Mix: Thee Extended Glitz Mix) 8:10

Martin Kavka, Thursday, 23 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

I gotta give props out to that Steve 'Silk' Hurley mix of "Fine Time" myself. I love that shit. it is a shame they didn't use that Saunderson mix though.

And am I the only one who adores the Sabres Of Paradise "Fast N Throb" mix of "Regret"?

Hutlock (Hutlock), Thursday, 23 June 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

4 years later I am here to say - No! you are not the only person who adores the Sabres remixes of Regret. If only my vinyl wasn't so crapped out.

sunny intervals (Ned Trifle II), Thursday, 8 October 2009 22:47 (sixteen years ago)

Fast N Throb mix isn't as good as the Slow mix though.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 8 October 2009 22:53 (sixteen years ago)

Agreed.

Also love the Sabres mixes. Looking forward to Jeb posting more of this stuff on his excellent blog.

the 2cd edition : £1.50 in charity shop yesterday.

having only ever been a minor league fan, this is a lot of remixes to digest.

i love the beach buggy 12", and the original of course.

all these remixes of blue monday , and yet the original is the one i prefer - tell me which remix i should home in on.

mark e, Saturday, 6 December 2014 17:57 (eleven years ago)

The Hardfloor mix and the dubby one, think it's the Andrea mix, are the best of the Blue Monday 95 mixes.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 6 December 2014 17:59 (eleven years ago)

yeah, the hardfloor is ok ..
the rest kinda washed over me to be honest.

mark e, Saturday, 6 December 2014 18:05 (eleven years ago)

eleven years pass...

Just noticed they're soon reissuing The Best Of and The Rest Of with two extra discs of remixes. Quite apart from the fact of TBO's compromised track listing making even less sense today than in 1994 this has led me to youtube and rediscover some pleasant enough mixes I haven't heard in years: the Sabres Mix of Regret, which isn't one of their best but has an alluring if slightly queasy brightness to it, puts me in mind of early Lemon Jelly of all people; True Faith Sexy Disco Dub, agreeable enough prog-house but oh nice that failproof Jaydee organ; and World (the Price of Dub) which might work nicely with naff Eurodance diva+rapper combo over the top. I doubt the new discs will be all that revelatory but The Rest Of is a bit of a classic to me (longest individual CD I owned between 2005 and 2011).

there are two Sabres Regrets! “Slow’n’lo” and “fast’n’throb.” Sounds like you might be looking for the former.

the james holden remix of "someone like you" is really really cool, kinda like glitched out prog
