and what's the story with that "Diary of the Originator" series? how do they have 70 or more volumes of his shit?

Ô¿Ô (eman), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

i'm guessing the tapes are the way to go rather than these cds.

who is Sir T.J. Music and why is his name credited as producer all over a Screw CD?

Ô¿Ô (eman), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

3 'n' the Morning
As The World Turns Slow

I know both of these are great. http://governmentnames.blogspot.com dlk recently did a rundown of ten great screw tapes.

deej.., Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah, shit like soldiers united 4 cash-- that's a soundtrack for the dvd by the screwed up click. not even sure what's on it. various classic s.u.c. stuff from the tapes and some new stuff, i think. same with straight wreckin vol 1 (but straight wreckin is also a tape from 95). 3 n tha mornin was a modified version of a screw tape that came out on bigtyme records as an official release. not sure what screw tape in the deck is but probably the same deal cause there are quite a few releases like that, compilations of screwed up click stuff from the actual tapes re-released on cd (like the fat pat since the grey tapes or whatever it's called).

333333333333, Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

all the other names you listed are just dj screw tapes that he sold thru the gate of his house and eventually at screwed up records and tapes.

http://www.screweduprecords.com/store2.asp

check out the site if you want to hear any screw shit. you're just seeing all the cash-in compilation shit. get the real thing.

if you want to know if they have a cd at any certain time, call them. shit, just call them up and ask them what tapes are classics. tell them you want a pac tape or some shit with fat pat going for 15 minutes or just pick based on a title or the year.

3333333, Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

diary of the originator = re-releasing the tapes. that's all it is. or, i guess, a re-release of the old double disc cd series they had. it's the same as the cds you could always get at the shop but with nice packaging and a cooler name, really. and diary of the originator kind of paved the way for the massive international bootlegging of screw's music, cause a bunch of stuff was released on cd for the first time and there was a big deal made about it.

clears = the tapes they sell at screwed up records and tapes. i can't remember the chronology properly and i might be way off but i believe screw started releasing stuff on clear tapes as well as grey maxells in 1997. someone could tell you the exact first clear tape. but "clear" mostly refers to labeled tapes sur&t.

greys = originals. ("just pop in yo grey cassette, turn up yo fuckin deck / lend me your ear because the southside fitna wreck" "with a cup full of barre and a candy car / jammin on a robert davis grey tape")

333333333333, Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

This thread poses an excellent question!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:16 (twenty years ago)

wow, thanks 3333333333 (give or take some 3's), this answers everything.

except i have 'screw tape in the deck' which says "starring dj screw and the screwed up click." almost every track is credited to sir t.j. music. the productions are actually pretty damn great, but i'm wondering where screw fits in here?

i'm definitely really interested in the really long freestyle tracks. the few i've managed to download are amazing and so far i haven't found anything like that on these readily available cds. i'll have to order some stuff from that site though, thanks for the link.

Ô¿Ô (eman), Thursday, 23 June 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

here's the tracklisting for 'screw tape in the deck':
Intro
Still Pen Pimpin`
Splitting Wigs
Southside - (remix)
Friends - (Freestyle)
Let Me Roll
Bounce And Turn
We Gone Ride
Sunny Day - (Freestyle)
Sunny Day
Who`s Next
Juicy - (Freestyle)
No Problem
Leaving You
My Lady
What It Do
Steady Ballin
Outro

the freestyle tracks aren't very long so maybe they're edited down from the tapes?

"cl'che and lil o tearing it up but lil flip tearing it all down. shit to give you goosebumps when he slowly gets faster and faster until he's damn near in quadruple time, making his flow normal speed thru that heavy screw down. flowing normal speed over a beat that's moving four times slower than he is. and doing it for real freestyle, spitting and spitting for ten minutes with barely a break. getting to the core of why flip was so cold back in the day and really amazing." i know what i mean if yall don't.

"got more drank than doogie howser," "diamonds in ya face," "open my mouth say farewell to the dark," i could type them out all day, nigga hot like the hot boys, talkin bout we sittin sideways in the drop, boys. fuck. ME AND LIL WAS AT THE STUDIO THE OTHER DAY DOIN A SONG / SITTIN ON CHROME / WITH DENNY JONES / WITH YELLOWBONES FROM YELLOWSTONE / I SAID HIT ME ON MY NEXTEL TELEPHONE. let me say, first of all, now that wordplay in rap has slipped to where it fucking is now, nobody got anything to say to flip rhyming astrodome and chrome a million times. he rhymes onamatopeia and cheetah, too.

but the thing is, what i wanted to say is, the thing that fucks me up, is that the lines, are beautiful but inconsequential in a lot of ways, the thing that is amazing is the way he's flowing. i was reading that movie thread on ilx today and someone made fun of citizen kane lovers talking about how orson welles was scultping in time or whatever, and that's what flip is doing, using his flow to stretch and compress time, speeding up and slowing down, changing the rhythm of it. i can't musically describe it because i don't have the words.

shit, he's actually lyrically ridiculous on this, too. so, i don't know. fucks me up. and he was 17 years old when he did this. let me try to find the other flip freestyle off this tape.

there are a billion dj screw discs and songs on emusic. no idea where to start. i loved his slowed-down, bizzaro version of phil collins' in the air tonight, but that doesn't appear to be in emusic's dj screw catalog. is that because screw's reimaginations of other artist's work doesn't often appear on commercially-available tapes/discs (presumably for copyright-related issues)?

unlike a lot of southern rap that when you slow it down sounds like getting stoned and laying in the sun, all the snappy drums soft like beach stones, this e-40 track sounds almost overwhelmingly eerie and tuneless. i've always liked it.

i should have written something about street military back when i was super into that kind of honest mean bluecollar houston rap that's mostly disappeared now, an old man rapper thing-- except for trae and z-ro, who i still associate with that sort of thing and who still shoutout incarcerated street military members. i dunno, it's a really specific style. swisher sweets. poverty. people getting robbed. it's a style that's sort of in opposition to a lot of the screwed up click stuff. no styrofoam cups. fewer candy cars. sounds amazing stretched out chopped up.

that's beautiful. all the edges rounded off. there are these certain sounds, slowed down, that sort of fade in and out of the white noise in the background. it's all the whistles and creaks in stuff like this that slip in and out of that white noise haze.

og ron c still puts out slowed down slowjam mixes. fuck action series is up to the 60s, now. michael watts had straight to tha room. i should have written about them when i was really into them. greasy lush r&b and slowjam stuff. but not the same. not the same. missing hazy beauty and lazy cuts and willingness to stretch things on and on.

i think part of what held an unfortunate appeal to me with dj screw was the difficulty in finding certain recordings, the dispassionate notes of collectors, the geographical barriers that existed in tracking down tapes. i wrote the list of then during the golden age of music piracy, when i downloaded everything i heard-- except screw tapes. i probably compiled that list of ten tapes from a longlist of, let's say, fifteen, sixteen that i had actually heard.

so, there was a need to delve into the individual character of each tape, analyzing the dramatis personae, the history of it, breaking down song selection and seemingly innocuous quirks. even if they weren't great on first listen, they'd be fucking amazing after you had researched every aspect that was researchable. their scarcity made them treasures for me.

i was still coming down two 12s in my chevy trunk blowing swisher smoke behind tints but because i was into those innocuous quirks, i probably overrated the freestyle-heavy tapes. some of the entries on that list are on there because i hadn't heard very many tapes and because i liked tracking down references and shouted out marginal characters and i was in love with the style of rapping and the content of it, which was produced by constraints placed on subject matter which led to the microscopic dedicated descriptions of styrofoam cups and the effects of promethazine and hydrocodone.

i find 96 live boring as fuck but it's right in the middle of that list.

dylannn, Saturday, 20 April 2013 07:29 (thirteen years ago)

i really like these two right now:

wineberry over gold all westcoast hard raps and it took me nearly ten years later to start fucking with westcoast ogs like e-40, ant banks, cube. it's 1 am, "wassup P-A-T, wanna do something off this beat?" fat pat wipes greasy synths away with the back of his hand, takes a sip of barre, militant lazy north-south rivalry lines shooting up funerals to preserve the pride of the southside beset by northside stickup kids taking the physical jewels of the south and the intangible cultural practices etc.

hurricane duck man soul ii soul with those big drmmms into street military atari granulated whines and horn moans into a freestyle by screw's barber. i done popped that trunk.
