An experiment I encourage everyone to try.

This is something I've been interested in for a while but haven't actually tried myself yet:

Acquire a new CD, either by downloading or purchasing. Make sure it's a band and album that you're generally unfamiliar with.

Play the album while you sleep at night every night for at least a week (if you have a computer in your sleeping room, this is easy: make an Itunes/Windows Media/whatever playlist with the album playing all the way through once or twice each night, but make sure that you have some other songs before it so it actually plays some time after you've fallen asleep.) If you have a multi-disc changer, than let some other album play as you fall asleep and let it roll on to this "test" album afterwards.

Then, after this week (or time period of your choice) sit down and give the album a good listen. I'm interested in whether or not people actually vaguely recognize some of the songs or not; in other words, is it possible to absorb music as you sleep?

Interested in seeing the results.

I generally can't fall asleep while music is playing.

I'm sure this would work. You'd probably enjoy the album more actually. Remind me to try it tonight.

Try it tonight. (HO HO MY SIDES etc. Sorry.) I'll give it a go, although, what if I fall in love with the album after I've listened to it properly? How will I know if I'd have felt that anyway?

Many musicians have noted that they know a difficult piece better when they wake up than when they went to bed, because they were working on it in their sleep.

Then there's that old possibly apocryphal jazzman story about the guy who dreamed a great tune, woke up long enough to write it down, then went back to sleep. When he woke up he found that what he had written down was actually "Stardust."

...and that guy was Hoagy Carmichael.

Sorry.

I intend to try this when my equipment allows, though I've had a similar experience with Joe Frank's KARMA series.

Coincidentally, I looked today for some Learn Italian MP3s, found a couple called "Subliminals To Learn Language", which sound to my ears like the sound of waves. Which makes me wonder: why waves? Why not Iggy?

...and that guy was Hoagy Carmichael.

And now you know the rest of the story.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Day!

joygoat (joygoat), Thursday, 23 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

yes, curious to find the results. im afraid i might wake up too often at night and actually hear it though. but i do love sleeping with music on because of this.

That's actaully a really cool idea. Worth trying.

OK I've failed miserably in this so far. Thursday: had just about enough energy to burn CD, not to put it in player or set alarm, before I collapsed on the bed. Friday: woken up by the distinctive harmonious click of my stereo turning on at 4am. Saturday: spent at a friend's house (although when I got home my stereo was on, as though the alarm had come on and the CD had played... and the volume was turned right up, although my flatmates heard nothing). Sunday: School night! Alarm in use for other purposes. And my PC is too loud to leave on all night (despite spending time and money building it with quiet components, grr).
