T/S Alice Donut vs. Janes Addiction

Seriously, if there are any Jane's Addiction fans left out there that haven't heard the (in my opinion, far superior but similar) Alice Donut, get thee to a search engine and go. now.

Listening to "The Untidy Suicides..." at the moment and feeling bowled over by the goodness. Anyone?

This might be a long, one-sided fight, I fear.

Or, perhaps, a quiet shout into infinity. Hello?

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

I don't know about the comparison, I'd rather see Alice Donut vs. Butthole Surfers. (which Alice would win if we take the complete discography, but Butthole Surfers would win if we ignore everything since Pioughd)

To me, Jane's Addiction were more like the modern equivalent of Led Zeppelin and not in the same demented psychedelic experimental universe as Donut/Surfers.

But that's just what I think and I could be very wrong.

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 23 June 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

Apart from 'I WANNA LACTATE, SIN FREE!' being one of the best delivered lines in rock music, I'd have to plump for Jane's.

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 23 June 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

I had a friend from SF who pitched me Alice Donut as the Bay Area's better, smarter Jane's Addiction. They nailed a look/concept, put on a pretty good, energetic show.

But it's no insult to say they wilted next to Jane's Addiction. Was there a band back then, live esp., that didn't? Speaking of the Surfers I remember at those Lollapalooza shows seeing Gibby and Paul Leary (and Siouxsie, Rollins, Reznor, et al), in the wings — just absolutely MESMERIZED by the Jane's set.

Jane's hasn't aged very well, but that shit was Church.

I only know Alice Donut's cover of "My Boyfriend's Back" and it is utterly fantastic.

i remember some bb/ad dubble bills in th early 90's and was always shocked by how tight they were..even down to th donning of the paint splatterd flashers coat th singer had...they could see th gleam of resin in our eyes and had sum kind words for us..oh and th trombone sabbath cover always got things rolling...janes was never really jokey, junky perhaps

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Alice Donut by a mile though I've never been a fan of Jane's. Mule is one of the most underappreciated albums of the 90's, not just for Mother of Christ (I wanna lactate sin free may have the best delivery but I wanna feel what Mary felt when God spent his seed is the best line) but some of the more plaintive 'slice of life for the underemployed ' songs like "tiny ugly world" and "roaches in the sink".

Jacobo Rock, Thursday, 23 June 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Donut's "Lisa's Father" alone wins this (dubious) competition.

I thought Donut are/were an NYC band. An old housemate used to work w/their lead singer, and I once bumped into their guitar player buying rollerblades. Were they in SF at one time?

dlp9001, Thursday, 23 June 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

I used to see Alice Donut hanger-on and cover boy Chet everywhere I went. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he pops up on this thread.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 23 June 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

An odd pairing, this.

Yes, Alice Donut were from NYC.

Here's Chet!

I haven't spotted him around in ages, but yeah -- he was seemingly ubiquotous back in the day. Last time I saw him was in the Coney Island Mermaid Parade back in `97.

Just for those who might think I am smoking crack re: all this, I submit "Magdalene" from "Untidy Suicides..."

Think first Janes Addiction on XXX...Am I the only one who hears the similarity?

John Justen (johnjusten), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

I didn't click the link, but if it's the song I'm remembering, Alice Donut has one song that sounds like a Jane's Addiction ripoff. My bet is that's the song you just linked. Production, voice, everything. Their entire catalog was available on their site as mp3 and I downloaded everything. They did not sound like Jane's Addiction. They also ripped off Flaming Lips on a few songs.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 24 June 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

Well...click the link and find out if you're right, eh?

I think that there is more than a cursory connection, and I don't buy the "ripoff" angle so much...EVER. Generally a value judgement of what you like vs. what you don't, IMHO. In a nutshell, everyone creatively rips someone off, depending on your point of view.

John Justen (johnjusten), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

That song came out in 1992, right? Jane's had recorded it's 4th album by then and Lollapalooza was in it's second year, wasn't it? Alice Donut didn't have a single song that sounded like Jane's Addiction earlier on in their career. And really nothing else on that album, either.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 24 June 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Or, actually, Ritual De Lo Habitual was only their 3rd album, right?

It's not a matter of what I like vs. what I don't. I like both bands for different reasons and wouldn't bother comparing them in a either/or contest. But, Alice Donut clearly was ripping off Jane's and Flaming Lips at times in their later career.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 24 June 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

RE: "Ripping Off" as a concept...I think that when people make statements like this they are treading in dangerous waters, and also being dismissive, like it or not. Was Janes ripping off Led Zeppelin? Where the Cows ripping off Alice Donut? I choose not to think so, because I tend to give the benefit of the doubt to the artist, I guess. Influenced by, sure...but when you're talking about the art-damaged oddities involved in this thread, there's a whole slew of influences involved that, to me don't invoke "ripping off" anybody.

Also, I'm not saying that the similarities stop at this one song, and would argue that the general feel of (at least) "Untidy Suicides..." is far more similar than you seem to think. Still - opinions, right?

John Justen (johnjusten), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

I remember meeting a couple of the gents in Alice Donut (some of them were pals with Cop Shoot Cop) and they didn't seem like the type of folks who'd be Jane's Addiction fans. They liked a lot more bizarre stuff than that (think Lisa Suckdog & Costes, etc.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

Jane's doesn't sound like Led Zeppelin, but I'm sure they were influenced by them as well as other bands that were influenced by Led Zeppelin. Jane's owes a lot to Led Zeppelin, as does modern rock in general. The Cows? Don't know, never heard 'em.

Now, how old were you in 1992? Because that song sound like Jane's Addiction. If you had been of age to hear it when it came out, you would know that the Jane's Addiction sound was hanging heavy in the air and to sound so much like Jane's Addiction was incredibly obvious. It sounded like kind of a bad Jane's Addiction song from the early days and I've never heard anyone else sing like Perry Ferrell except in this song. Of course, if you weren't listening to Jane's Addiction since 1988 when they first broke big and you weren't listening to Alice Donut when that song came out, you wouldn't realize today what a ripoff that song really is.

As for Alice Donut liking Jane's Addiction fans, I think they wanted to break big and were sick of doing house parties in Port Chester.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 24 June 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

And, Alex, when did you meet the gents in Alice Donut? In 1992? I have a feeling it was more like 1996.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 24 June 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

And, Alex, when did you meet the gents in Alice Donut? In 1992? I have a feeling it was more like 1996.

It was after a CMJ thing downtown. It was them, C$C and members of a band called Of Cabbages & Kings. `92 or `93 maybe.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 June 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

92-93 was the height and beginning of the immediate decline of their career, wasn't it? I know they wanted to break big really bad and just didn't. I saw/met them also around that time and they seemed like the standard too cool rocker dudes who wouldn't really like anything popular, like the Butthole Surfers' demeanor who were also ready and willing to sell out. But, it was a house party and maybe they just weren't thrilled. I guessed '96 because I figured they were probably real jaded or jealous by then.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 24 June 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

But, after thinking about it, I like Alice Donut better. They have some annoying songs, but I think overall their music is easier to listen to repeatedly for years and years. Jane's Addiction, by comparison, I think has a better overall plan and execution for their songs, but this is part of why they wear out quicker and, in the end, Jane's has fewer songs.

Well, I've said enough on this thread. I'll leave it to everyone else now.

Stoner Guy, Friday, 24 June 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

ok dont care about my original thread question anymore but jesus untidy suicides is fucking great.

i was so earnest in my early days on ilx.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 07:14 (sixteen years ago)

Lisa's Father is a better song than anything Jane's Addiction recorded.

actually a decent question y'all fucked up with ironic bullshit answer (sarahel), Tuesday, 21 July 2009 08:03 (sixteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

New album on Alternative Tentacles. Anyone hear it yet?

steampig67, Monday, 17 August 2009 14:20 (sixteen years ago)

Bizarrely, I kind of like it! And I'm pretty sure I never listened to a note of Alice Donut before. (Not sure why they covered a Pixie song at the end, though.)

xhuxk, Monday, 17 August 2009 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

Mule was the first one I bought. Untidy Suicides tour just fucking blew me away.

I wish more people would rep for their (pre-reunion) swan song Pure Acid Park. That is such an eclectic and wonderful record.

Haven't heard the latest yet but I should.

Alice Donut is so much better than Janes Addiction. And I was around during the heyday of both (though I never saw Janes live so I can't comment on the show). Both Donut shows I've seen were fantastic.

Nate Carson, Monday, 17 August 2009 23:17 (sixteen years ago)

Pulled out Pure Acid Park a few days ago. That launched me on a google quest to see what they were up to. AD seem to be one of those forgotten bands. People at the time at least had heard of them but nobody mentions them in stories about the 80s/90s.

steampig67, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 12:59 (sixteen years ago)

First song on Three Sisters sounds very CopShootCopish. Wonder if that holds up on the other reunion albums?

steampig67, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 13:09 (sixteen years ago)

Really digging Three Sisters.

steampig67, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

Still don't see much in common between Jane's and Alice.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 13:47 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't really hear that either. "Shiloh" on the new album actually reminds me of Three Johns! (Favorite tracks are probably that one and "Wide" -- I like when their sound beefs up a little, which doesn't happen enough, at least not on this record. Favorite song title is "Prog Jenny" -- the world could definitely use more songs about prog rock girls.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

six years pass...

Alice Donut really fell off the map, didn't they. Watching this. http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/alice_donut_freaks_in_love
