Listening to "The Untidy Suicides..." at the moment and feeling bowled over by the goodness. Anyone?
This might be a long, one-sided fight, I fear.

To me, Jane's Addiction were more like the modern equivalent of Led Zeppelin and not in the same demented psychedelic experimental universe as Donut/Surfers.
But that's just what I think and I could be very wrong.

But it's no insult to say they wilted next to Jane's Addiction. Was there a band back then, live esp., that didn't? Speaking of the Surfers I remember at those Lollapalooza shows seeing Gibby and Paul Leary (and Siouxsie, Rollins, Reznor, et al), in the wings — just absolutely MESMERIZED by the Jane's set.
Jane's hasn't aged very well, but that shit was Church.

I thought Donut are/were an NYC band. An old housemate used to work w/their lead singer, and I once bumped into their guitar player buying rollerblades. Were they in SF at one time?

Yes, Alice Donut were from NYC.
I used to see Alice Donut hanger-on and cover boy Chet everywhere I went. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he pops up on this thread.
Here's Chet!

I haven't spotted him around in ages, but yeah -- he was seemingly ubiquotous back in the day. Last time I saw him was in the Coney Island Mermaid Parade back in `97.

Think first Janes Addiction on XXX...Am I the only one who hears the similarity?

I think that there is more than a cursory connection, and I don't buy the "ripoff" angle so much...EVER. Generally a value judgement of what you like vs. what you don't, IMHO. In a nutshell, everyone creatively rips someone off, depending on your point of view.

It's not a matter of what I like vs. what I don't. I like both bands for different reasons and wouldn't bother comparing them in a either/or contest. But, Alice Donut clearly was ripping off Jane's and Flaming Lips at times in their later career.
― Stoner Guy, Friday, 24 June 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)
Also, I'm not saying that the similarities stop at this one song, and would argue that the general feel of (at least) "Untidy Suicides..." is far more similar than you seem to think. Still - opinions, right?

Now, how old were you in 1992? Because that song sound like Jane's Addiction. If you had been of age to hear it when it came out, you would know that the Jane's Addiction sound was hanging heavy in the air and to sound so much like Jane's Addiction was incredibly obvious. It sounded like kind of a bad Jane's Addiction song from the early days and I've never heard anyone else sing like Perry Ferrell except in this song. Of course, if you weren't listening to Jane's Addiction since 1988 when they first broke big and you weren't listening to Alice Donut when that song came out, you wouldn't realize today what a ripoff that song really is.
As for Alice Donut liking Jane's Addiction fans, I think they wanted to break big and were sick of doing house parties in Port Chester.

It was after a CMJ thing downtown. It was them, C$C and members of a band called Of Cabbages & Kings. `92 or `93 maybe.

Lisa's Father is a better song than anything Jane's Addiction recorded.

New album on Alternative Tentacles. Anyone hear it yet?
― steampig67, Monday, 17 August 2009 14:20 (sixteen years ago)
Bizarrely, I kind of like it! And I'm pretty sure I never listened to a note of Alice Donut before. (Not sure why they covered a Pixie song at the end, though.)

Mule was the first one I bought. Untidy Suicides tour just fucking blew me away.
I wish more people would rep for their (pre-reunion) swan song Pure Acid Park. That is such an eclectic and wonderful record.
Haven't heard the latest yet but I should.
Alice Donut is so much better than Janes Addiction. And I was around during the heyday of both (though I never saw Janes live so I can't comment on the show). Both Donut shows I've seen were fantastic.

Pulled out Pure Acid Park a few days ago. That launched me on a google quest to see what they were up to. AD seem to be one of those forgotten bands. People at the time at least had heard of them but nobody mentions them in stories about the 80s/90s.
― steampig67, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 12:59 (sixteen years ago)
First song on Three Sisters sounds very CopShootCopish. Wonder if that holds up on the other reunion albums?
― steampig67, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 13:09 (sixteen years ago)
Really digging Three Sisters.
― steampig67, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 13:30 (sixteen years ago)
Still don't see much in common between Jane's and Alice.
― Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 13:47 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I don't really hear that either. "Shiloh" on the new album actually reminds me of Three Johns! (Favorite tracks are probably that one and "Wide" -- I like when their sound beefs up a little, which doesn't happen enough, at least not on this record. Favorite song title is "Prog Jenny" -- the world could definitely use more songs about prog rock girls.)

Alice Donut really fell off the map, didn't they. Watching this. http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/alice_donut_freaks_in_love
