It's a Thursday night in Manchester England, the promoter wants it to be old and modern pop, dancing isn't a priority but the music should be geared towards this as the night progresses. He also wants the bar staff and myself to wear a t-shirt with the name of the night on but he can fuck right off in this respect.

I have a good wodge of tracks already lined up (Bobby O, Nu Shooz, Man 2 Man, Patrick Cowley, Grace Jones, PSB, etc) but I'd like to know what your favourite gay-friendly disco/80s/contemp. pop songs are. Go!

You can't go wrong with Building a Bridge by Latitude (Nude, 1993). I've also found that the wonderful Optimystic (particularly The Best Thing in the World) makes the mature gay contingent leap with joy and mutter things about Studio 54 that I, being but a young breeder, just do not understand.

ian p is playing at my house (ian p is playing at my house), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Ian, get out of my record collection!

(Also, e-mail me, I have some tiny gossip)

BARMS, Friday, 24 June 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

that playlist is sweeet.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 24 June 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Kylie Minogue - Your Disco Needs You - campest song ever, it's fucking fabulous.
Joe Smooth - Promised Land - how old is mature? House classics from their youth should be a safe bet.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 24 June 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

Ah shit fuck, the guy just rang and gave me a list of suggested acts to play: Abba, Cliff Richard, Bowie, Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Pet Shop Boys, Culture Club. Like, shit. I expected it to be 'edgier' than this. I've never done a set of typical wedding disco stuff before, does anyone have any tips on how best to play the set - should I play a load of 60s stuff all together, then a bunch of similar sounding 80s stuff, or just mix it all up together? Also, what are a few good simple compilations to get? No matter what, I'm determined to play 'Passion' by The Flirts.

BARMS, I'll mail you on Gmail when I get home from work. What's the gossip? You finally up for that fistfight in Piccadilly Gardens you big chicken? Or you want my sister's hand in marriage?

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

You could play the Neil Tennant CD of the Pet Shop Boys back to mine for the first hour or so, it's all tasteful, classy ambient stuff. I don't know how "dinner party" you want to make it though.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Life outside ILM being "less edgier" - shock or not ?

Vichitravirya XI (Vichitravirya XI), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I think you should stick to the playlist you've already planned; it's way better than the promoter's suggestions, without straying too far from the theme.

You'll get paid and if you don't get asked back you probably wouldn't want to repeat the gig anyway, yes?

Paul outta Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

A gay night in a dark decent dingy venue in the 'edgy' bit of Manchester in being very un-edgy - shock. y'dig?

I think I'll just mix the two sets, Donna Summer, PSB, early Madonna, Prince. I don't think I can bring myself to play Cliff though.

He also said:
"I think what I want is, well I don't really know what the word means but does 'eclectic' mean anything to you?"

and

"You can play some of that modern stuff but no BOOM BOOM BOOM ok?"

He seemed like a nice guy so I don't want to let him down but I'm guessing the crowd will be happier to hear 'You make me feel mighty real' than 'Radio Ga Ga'. Who knows. I'll probably just cop out and have a requests sheet and make like a jukebox rather than an *artiste*.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and how about Blondie - "The Tide is High"

Paul outta Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Or you want my sister's hand in marriage?

That trick doesn't work on dudes who've seen The Crying Game.

I played 'Don't stop the music' 5 times at the end of the night because the owner was pissing about and I wanted to go onto another club. I was curious to see if anyone would notice. No one did.

The whole night was quite brilliant and charming and hilarious and I am getting a crash course in hi-nrg from muscly Mick and the 6ft blonde transsexual working the door kept calling me adorable and kissing my cheeks. It woz ace.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Mike-t, a lot of the songs on your list were either what I considered playing or what muscly Mick and others recommended me to get for next time (I'm d/ling 'Colour my love' by Fun Fun right now). I was also asked for Anouska Hemple and Lana Pelly (sps?), anyone know of these?
Other requests: a hi-nrg version of '9 to 5', a song called 'I just wanna fucking dance', the 2001 bootleg mix of Pointer Sisters (they *really* loved the Pointer Sisters in there), and more more more Taylor Dane.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Great playlist there, Affectian. (Yay! Company B!), and glad it went well.

The Lana Pellay is the very Dead-Or-Alive-ish "Pistol In My Pocket". I'll try and YSI it early next week.

The Hi-NRG "9 To 5" has been big at our local Nottingham flea pit for the last couple of years... don't know who it's by, though...

Well, the mixing runs the full gamut, from immaculate to perfunctory. However, I am quite inordinately proud of Bananarama into Maria Vidal, Sabrina into Taffy, and Taffy into Fun Fun.
