I'm not usually a fan of best ofs or greatest hits compliations, so would favour starting with their best studio albums.

Sisters of Mercy
Roxy Music
Stereolab
The Fall
The Clash
Shellac
Dream Theater
Siouxsee & the Banshees

The Fall - either This Nation's Saving Grace or Bend Sinister. Other Fall fans' opinions may well differ.

Sisters - First and Last and Always.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Friday, 24 June 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

the fall: hip priest & kamerads, or totales turn its now or never

stereolab: switched on

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 24 June 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

Sisters: what Scrovula said, but also Some Girls Wander By Mistake. it's a compilation, but not a best of/greatest hits, just a collection of their great early singles (Alice, Temple Of Love, Reptile House EP).

StanM (StanM), Friday, 24 June 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

the fall: hex enduction hour

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 24 June 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

Shellac: 1000 Hurts.

Roxy: first album

Banshees: Once Upon A Time, I guess. It'll at least let you see which period you think you might like best.

As has been said on other threads, the most recent Fall compilation is untouchable for Fall virgins.

Shellac-at action park.

Ellis From Die Hard, Friday, 24 June 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

Stereolab: Mars Audiac Quintet
Clash: s/t
Roxy Music: s/t

Not necessarily the best album overall but the best ones to start with and ignoring best-of's:

Sisters of Mercy - Some Girls Wander By Mistake (a comp. of sorts, but not a "best-of" as such)
Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure
Stereolab - Emperor Tomato Ketchup
The Fall - The Complete Peel Sessions (a comp. of sorts, but not a "best-of" as such)
The Clash - London Calling
Siouxsee & the Banshees - Kaleidoscope

Siouxsie - A Kiss in the Dreamhouse and the Sisters of Mercy - Floodland were perfect introductions for me. Then again, my parents were listening to them all the time when I was little, soooo...

Banshees: Any of these: Kaleidoscope, Kiss in the Dreamhouse, Juju

Kiss in the Dreamhouse is my favorite, though.

The Fall - Live At The Witch Trials
The Clash - Combat Rock
Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure

nicholas de jong (nicholas de jong), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

the clash: sandinista

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Roxy Music: For Your Pleasure
The Fall: Hex Enduction Hour (best introduction you can get!)
The Clash: don't bother
Shellac: 1000 Hurts
Siouxsee & the Banshees: Kaleidoscope

Sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always
Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure
Stereolab - Couldn't tell ya. I do like what I've heard of theirs, though.
The Fall - Toughie. Lots to choose from. Maybe pick up the A-Sides compilation. If nothing there grabs you, move on.
The Clash - I'd start with the first record.
Shellac - Meh. I'd sooner suggest Big Black, but Action Park if you must.
Dream Theater - Kill yourself. Really. Slash your wrists. Dunk your head in a fishtank of sulfuric acid for even considering this.
Siouxsee & the Banshees - I'm inclined to say you cannot go wrong here....well, maybe take your time before rushing out to buy Join Hands or The Rapture. Why not start with The Scream or maybe Hyaena?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Roxy Music: Definitely For Your Pleasure. Not their best (Standed is) but the best introduction to their sound and overall Roxy-ness.

The Clash: It begins and ends with London Calling. But if you want to get creative, start with Super Black Market Clash, an expansion of the Black Market Clash EP. Tons of great songs.

Stereolab: Transient.....

That good huh?

dmun drive-in (dmun), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

I'd go with "Stranded" for Roxy, just because of "Amazona," which is so fucking amazing. And obviously the first Clash album, altho if you could get the Cost of Living EP on its own (can you?) I'd say that one, it always came across as something with so much heart and soul. And Stereolab--well, my favorite is still "Dots and Loops," some great super-pop moments on there. The Fall, I have no idea, maybe "Witch Trials," and I have a soft spot for "Curious Oranj" myself.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Roxy Music start with Roxy Music or any of the first three really (For Your Pleasure or Strander).
Stereolab start with Switched On Volume 1 or Transient Noise.
The Fall start Hex Enduction Hour or After The Gramme!
Shellac start with Big Black's Atomizer.

Roxy Music's first is one of the most unique and startling debuts in rock history. I would highly recommend starting there and then picking others up sequentially thereafter. IMO, starting with "Stranded" or "Country Life" -- essential albums both -- and then backtracking misses the band's progression, the sense of reining in the chaos, learning to play their instruments and make more technically accomplished records.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

The Fall: I'd go with the double CD comp "Totally Wired"
