I have an ace Hawke album but I should pull everything out and listen again before commenting in depth.

the best part of the mix is tracks 5-11. starts out with spooky spacy dry sabres-type drummy tracks, moves quickly into a brief minimal techno workout (very kompakt-sounding in parts) and suddenly swerves into a crazy freaked-out acid workout.
that section of the mix hasn't dated a day - still sounds completely awesome.

I'm always surprised by how linear all the stuff on it is - the hippy/psychodelic flavour you'd expect is very mild, it's basically straight Drum Club style prog (some of it is very good though!).
Whereas Mixed Messages, which i got back in 1999 I think, lived up very much to what I was expecting, very much that balearic quasi-tribal trance dance vibe going.
Namaquadisco is a lot like that too, but then it raises it to a new level production-wise. Actually it would be a good fit on Vahid's protomicrohouse thread, reminds me a bit of the Motorbass album! Some great and v. unusual use of EQ.

let's see ... scott did "yes" (very heavy on the hardkiss productions) and "united djs of america". that one looks promising, it's got something called the "boss in the jungle dub" of the heartists. weren't they outed as basement jaxx? or were they just on atlantic jaxx?
gavin did something for some obscure-ass SF label called BPM, "weekend" (too heavy on midtempo leftfield breaks crap), "through rose tinted glasses" (never trust a label showcase), and "loft party: san francisco" (might be potential there).
anyone wanna vouch for any of these?

I hadn't thought of a Tuning Spork/Hardkiss connection, but.... YES!

Recently stumbled across Weekend, and while it is definitely heavy on leftfield midtempo breaks crap, I think I quite like it - I have a certain amount of tolerance for leftfield midtempo breaks crap I guess.

I know we should be talking about Scott, but this is still one of the most amazing DJ mixes I've heard:
that mix - "mixed messages" - IS really great, and it's why i started the thread! picked it up the other day on a whim, because it's one of a very few discs that has a track by ferox label head russ gabriel.the best part of the mix is tracks 5-11. starts out with spooky spacy dry sabres-type drummy tracks, moves quickly into a brief minimal techno workout (very kompakt-sounding in parts) and suddenly swerves into a crazy freaked-out acid workout.

Can't believe Ned calls it dated in his AMG review. I reckon if Dixon (say) dropped this set now people would go nuts.

Played this again the other day. Inspired mix, love it. Great use of Groovelock and electric mistress.
