I hope not.

Kyle Anderton (Kyle Anderton), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

yay!!!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

Gavin, Friday, 24 June 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

"Ghetto Classics" samples Art of Noise or Yello or something. Help!

Also, dude from Maroon 5.

Gavin, Friday, 24 June 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Pros:

Electro sampling madness!
Bass!
Sincere concern about America at war!

Cons:

Too much rhyming "bitch" with "shit"
Previously promised remix of Britney's "Boom Boom" conspicuously absent
Too many Slow Jams (sorry, I mean "Crunk-N-B" *cough cough*)
7 skits at 8:26, including 2 minute skit about their new imprint and merchandise

They couldn't do the Court Jesters of Crunk forever, so this is a logical progression. I'll miss their heyday -- Say I YI YI!

Gavin, Friday, 24 June 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Too much rhyming "bitch" with "shit"

it's so revolutionary, it's conservative! put those bitches in their place, yo!

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Do they beat pussies up in the album????

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

And also....

Are they going to beat up a girl's pussy because she seen their dicks? What's so wrong with their dicks that they have to beat up a vagina?

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Art Of Noise, "Beatbox".

JoB (JoB), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Well, I think the sentiments about women on the album are more complicated than your caricature, but yeah, "Wait" is on it in two versions (remix has Missy, Busta, and some others on it).

Gavin, Friday, 24 June 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Lil Scrappy and Free if it is the same version floating around radio and the WWW.

There are 23 tracks on this thing! Oh wait 7 skits.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Mr. Collipark is DJ Smurf right?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

the sentiments ARE complex. they have songs that explore women that have to work as strippers as well as ones like badd bitch with mike jones and wait. its not all just 'hoes'.

ppp, Friday, 24 June 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

They aren't going to be getting any commendations from NOW, but at least they're making an attempt to acknowledge the female side of things. Admittedly, as soon as I thought to myself, "This is pretty progressive for the Ying Yang Twins," they went back to some "Fuck these hoes" shit. Oh well. It's the Ying Yang Twins, not fucking bell hooks.

Gavin, Friday, 24 June 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

They're the new City High!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

The mixing of songs between "hoes on my dick," "i sure love my mama"/"my boo is the greatest," and "i know you're a good girl in a bad situation, young lady!" isn't anything new.

Candicissima (candicissima), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Now, had there been a skit with the Ying Yang Twins fucking bell hooks, we'd probably have a much more interesting thread.

Gavin, Friday, 24 June 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Wow. I can't believe that's a real book!

Candicissima (candicissima), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha I can! The Pope just died! People is curious about those freak-os!

Mr. ColliPark = DJ Smurf = Beat-In-Azz

Al (sitcom), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Okay I was just making sure that the version of the remix I had didn't have a cut off verse on it or something.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

i was kind of hoping there'd be a full female 'response' to "wait," ala "naggin'" parts one and two.

there is.

a real live British pub hooligan (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 June 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

This album really isn't very good, is it?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 26 June 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

whats wrong with it? its a bit all over the place but its pretty damn good.

ppp, Sunday, 26 June 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

They really really really really really need to make a video for "Live Again." And not just so we can see them hanging with Adam Levine.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

That Pitbull song makes me think, "Why isn't that Pitbull album better?"

Gavin, Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

What's wrong with that Pitbull album?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

After I finish listening to the TOK record, I will listen to the YYT record. I have low-ish expectations.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

On second listen I think there are too many ballads. But there's definitely more than its fair share of keepers. And the idea of a Ying Yang Twins album with too many ballads is kind of wonderful.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

how's the 3rd installment in the 'intimate club music' trilogy, "Bedroom Boom"? the fact that it features Avant makes me afraid.

there's a little article in the new XXL which prints the lyrics of "Pull My Hair" with a brief interview with Kaine about the song. I might type it out if I feel motivated to do so.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

ok, here it is, just the interview, though, I didn't bother typing the lyrics:

XXL: What was the intention behind making this song?

Kaine: Well, we told the female, "Wait 'til you see my dick." That was like the introduction. So, when we get them in the room, we're going to commence to pull on their hair. It's a way of being erotic towards the female, without exceeding the point of being sexual with it.

XXL: In the verse, you promote safe sex. Do you really practice what you preach?

Kaine: Yeah, "Walking over to you with the rubber." Hey, we can't afford to bust all freely, man.

XXL: You spit, "Your ass should've been built for the war." So, you like a ride-or-die chick?

Kaine: Yeah, nine times out of 10. A lot of women talk a lot of jazz about being in bed with a man and doing it the same way a man did to a woman. I'm just merely saying, if you going to talk like that, be about it.

XXL: How many women have you really made cry?

Kaine: I ain't no gigolo, man. I don't get down like that. What I write be picture painting. I just don't exceed a point of realism. The stuff I'm saying, you're going to picture being able to do. Not to say I done did all that rough sex, you know what I'm saying? But, I just don't deal with women like that. I'm Oscar the Grouch, man. All the women like D-Roc!

XXL: In reality, how would you treat a lady?

Kaine: Like a lady! You treat a lady like a lady. You treat a hoe like a hoe. And you treat a bitch like a bitch. So that mean, if you ain't for the hoe and you ain't for the bitch, then you don't need to deal with them.

XXL: Is this song targeted at a specific woman?

Kaine: No woman is excluded from what I talk about. We don't push the issue to disrespect women. There are some women who like very much to be respected and some women like being in a manner where other women feel it's not woman-like.

XXL: Is there a follow up to this record?

"Wait" to "Pull My Hair" and then there's "Bedroom Boom". All of those [were kicked off by] the "Wait" song. You telling them wait until you see my dick. Then you let her see your dick, get her into the room to pull her hair, and [now] it's time for the bedroom boom. It's a trilogy, man. Ying Yang, we think outside of the normal thought process. That's what brings about these types of songs, 'cause we use our brains to think more then we use the bullshit.

- Thomas A. Harden

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I haven't really sat down with "Bedroom Boom" lyrically, but its definitely in the "too many ballads" department soundwise. Before each of the trilogy there's a sex ed skit where women describe what they're looking for sexually, reaffirming my theory that these songs are hypothetically "for the ladies."

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

two tracks after "Bedroom Boom" is "I HATE HOES AND HOES HATE ME"

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

somewhere on the album I believe they declare USA "the return of the motherfuckin' brainiacs"

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

That's the title cut.

Too many skits. I only counted two ballads (including one about "living right and going to heaven" (??!?!)) It's actually a pretty consistent record on first listen. The third part of the "trilogy" is also not very good.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

I realize now I might have gotten distracted and missed a ballad or two.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

i would edit this album like this:

all good things
fuck the ying yang twins
ghetto classics
23 hr lock down
wait
pull my hair
the walk
hoes
badd
shake
my brothers keeper
USA

i might take my brothers keeper off when i transfer it to my ipod too, but this album is way too long

ppp, Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I would add the "Wait (Remix)" on there too. But since 8 or so of the 10 tracks you are skipping are brief skits, most of the stuff you are taking off doesn't amount to much.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

wtf you're keeping "my brother's keeper" but not "Live again"? "Live Again"'s the best track on the album!

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Am I missing all the ballads? On second listen I still only count two.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

a few weeks ago when they were on 106 & Park, Kaine sang the chorus of "Live Again" in his weird voice, and it sounded kinda cool, I'm curious what the real version w/ Maroon 5 dude sounds like.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

maybe ballad's not the right word I'm looking for. non-bangers I suppose.

Al, you need to hear Adam Levine moan "ohhhh, the life of a stripper..."

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait here is the third one. It's "My Brother's Keeper". Okay yeah I would drop that and put "Live Again" or even "Put That Thang Down" on instead too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

frankly I'm not much for all the stuff after "Shake." "USA" hasn't connected with me yet and the "Wait" remix is just weird.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I like the "Wait" remix a lot. But otherwise I think I mostly agree. I wouldnt say the song with Maroon 5 dude is the stand-out best, but it's definitely one of. Also (shockah!) the track with Bun-B is great.

deej.., Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

you need to hear Adam Levine moan "ohhhh, the life of a stripper..."

Thanks Anthony, that's sweet! For the right money, I'll do anything.

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

And with that.

you need to hear Adam Levine moan ohhhh, the life of a stripper... (nordicskilla, Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

haha you think YOU hate the maroon 5 dude? Think how Greg Dulli must feel. Not only did the other Levine take his shtick to the bank, he got to be on a Ying Yang track!

x-post: awesome!

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

I like "USA", but I have a special fondness for any track that gives shout outs to neighborhoods/cities/burroughs.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

Do they mention Edgware or Watford?

you need to hear Adam Levine moan ohhhh, the life of a stripper... (nordicskilla, Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Also "it's the return of the muthafuckin' brainiacs" is a total crack up.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

I would say "Shake" is the best track though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Kaine: No woman is excluded from what I talk about. We don't push the issue to disrespect women. There are some women who like very much to be respected and some women like being in a manner where other women feel it's not woman-like.

now can we all apologize to messrs. kaine and d-roc over on the "whisper in your ear" thread?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

i just got mine in the mail, and i think i already like it more than the last album. and i liked the last album. there is some really great stuff on this one. wait still creeps me out though. not for the sexism, i just get creeped out when people whisper in hi-fi.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

the maroon 5 guy is so bland and moany and whiny and nasal i could not have him on my personalised USA cd-r. if kaine sung it it might have been ok, but those tracks with ant hamilton and levine are like ying yang going black eyed peas.

ppp, Friday, 1 July 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm always confused when people treat the BEPs as the worst case scenario in rap.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm always confused when you don't. Just because you think garbage rhymes are funny and there's nothing wrong with pop beats doesn't mean everyone should give them a free pass.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Haha I find the Maroon 5 guy's voice pretty non-descript, but the fact that it is sung by ADAM LEVINE makes it all right to me.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

haha pop beats need a free pass?

miccio (miccio), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

The BEPs are enthusiastic, liberal-minded, unpredictable and catchy. Plenty of rappers aren't any of these things. And not all their rhymes are garbage (bite me, Al) - "Where Is The Love" has no OMGWTFLOL in it aside from maybe the distorted keyb solo and that they swipe the hook from "Torn," both are pretty mild amusements on that level.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

So is the Anthony Hamilton album any good? I love his guest spot on this and his single was pretty great too.

xp well nothing as good as "humans using humans for a bomb!"

deej.., Friday, 1 July 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I love you more than sex appeal, Anthony.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

No wonder you're on my dick these days.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

uh, yeesh, chill. I'm just saying, I don't sympathize when you defend BEP so staunchly. you could make a convincing case for a lot of other things being worse than them (including Ying Yang, arguably), but acting confounded when people hate on them seems a little daft to me.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

The Ying Yang Twins are far better than BEP. And I am confounded because I don't assume people are humorless, unimaginative puds, which is what you'd have to be to think the BEPs represent some loathsome extreme in the rap spectrum.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Either that or they watch way too much TV.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

whether good or bad, I do think they represent some sort of extreme. of all the crossover acts in the history of rap, I'd have to think either they or Will Smith are holding down the super clean and happy end of the spectrum (if we're limiting it to recording artists and not, say, rapping grandmas and animated creatures in movies).

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

don't forget Lil Romeo!

miccio (miccio), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Romeo has a posse and I'd bet money that his next album has tons of gun talk. the difference between kiddie rappers and BEP is that the kiddie rappers will grow up and want to be taken seriously, BEP have already grown up and obviously don't care about that (and of course, Will was a kiddie rapper once, and his new album has "take me seriously!" written all over it).

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

God, I can't imagine Romeo getting away with gun talk. Dude had a show on Nickelodeon!

miccio (miccio), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

he's in his dad's new video standing shirtless among spinning rims, it's a slippery slope. plus just because he was born rich doesn't mean he doesn't own guns.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

the Ying Yang Twins are fucking bell hooks

That's hot!

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Jim Dero loves the Black Eyed Peas!!! Here are his favorite albums of the year:

1. Common, "Be" (GOOD/Geffen): It ain't homerism, it's simply one of the strongest, most inventive and most honest hip-hop discs I've ever heard.

2. Coldplay, "X&Y" (Capitol): The backlash is well under way (the New York Times called it "insufferable"), but it's a mystery how anyone can resist pop music this accessible that draws from underground influences (Brian Eno, Kraftwerk) this cool.

3. LCD Soundsystem, "LCD Soundsystem" (DFA/Capitol): Cutting-edge dance grooves paired with vintage art-punk energy and invention. Irresistible.

4. The Black Eyed Peas, "Monkey Business": Hands-down the good-time, party groove disc of the summer.

5. Moby, "Hotel" (V2): The lovable chrome dome has been the subject of the second most vitriolic backlash of the summer (serves him right for doing all those commercials), but he has produced another pop gem.

6. The White Stripes, "Get Behind Me Satan" (V2): No one else in rock consistently does so much with so little.

7. Spoon, "Gimme Fiction" (Merge): Another art-punk classic, less dance-oriented, but with rhythms that are just as hard to deny.

8. Gorillaz, "Demon Days" (Virgin): A darker, trippier effort than their debut, but it holds up even better under repeated listenings.

9. Billy Corgan, "The Future Embrace" (Warner Bros.): No, it's not more homerism, nor is it evidence of a special love for bald guys -- just an impressive, heartfelt collection of electronic songs about the desire to be loved.

10. Damon & Naomi, "The Earth Is Blue" (20/20/20): Heartbreakingly beautiful psychedelic folk-rock from the veteran rhythm section of Galaxie 500.

deej.., Friday, 1 July 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

okay, it's official, i never want to hear Spoon.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

what the hell, Gimme Fiction is WAY more dance-oriented than Kill The Moonlight!

Scott, don't listen to him, they're good! Think Feelies.

What, not even 'Whatever happened to the values of humanity?'?

Also, what kind of person thinks Moby is 'lovable'?
