there isn't anything truly essential on this list. there is good stuff, but i would go earlier with curved air and caravan and later with chad & jeremy and the chambers brothers. canned heat were cool! you can buy all of their records for, like, 5 bucks. and chicory tip were great. okay, the chicory tip might be essential.

Canned Heat and The Chambers Bros - tho not sure how consistent their albums are

I'll second that, the Chambers Bros were basically a club band, did a lot of coverversions. That said 3 o4 tracks on their Grt Hts absolutely kill in the funky rock competition. Future Blues is the best Canned Heat LP IMO, more song-oriented and less "boogied-out" than their other stuff. Not something I'd go out of my way for tho.

Climax Blues Band were a heavy white-boy blooz band that got progressively more smooth and funky by turning down the guitar and turning up the saxaphone. I didn't see "FM Live" listed which is about the best of the lot, because it's all their interesting things done in a live setting, where they had a tendency to max prog and jazz jams into their tunes. Next up would be "Rich Man" -- which has a great funky boogie, "You Make Me Sick," and "Tightly Knit."

If you were going to buy a Caravan album it probably shouldn't be one of those. "In the Land of Grey and Pink" is pretty good second-tier soft machine.

Michael Chapman - "Fully Qualified Survivor", "Rainmaker"

chapman was the singer in 60s/70s uk band family with a quavering rock vibrato that can put some poeple off (almost all the family releases are fantastic, btw, especially "bandstand"). his later solo material lacks any of the real songwriting skill that his partner in family - charlie whitney - brought to the table. so you're left with r&b based hard rock. big in germany still, apparently.
