AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Cruella Deville - The Replacements version, does that count?

bg (creamolafoam), Friday, 24 June 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

sure.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 24 June 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

"I Wanna Be Like You (The Monkey Song)" (original or Los Lobos)
"Hi-Ho" (original or Tom Waits)
"Someday My Prince will Come" (original or Sinead O'Connor)
"The Unbirthday Song" (from "Alice in Wonderland")
"Chim-Chimeny, etc." (from "Mary Poppins")
"When You Wish Upon a Star" (from "Pinnochio")
"We are Siamese" (from "The Aristocats")

Man, there are so many! Most of them are good, until they got pop stars to write/sing them as power-ballad dreck.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 24 June 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

1. Hakuna Matata
2. A Whole New World
3. You got a friend in me
4. The Bare Necessities
5. I wanna be like you

dmun drive-in (dmun), Friday, 24 June 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

"When You Wish Upon a Star" is probably my favorite. Any votes for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight"?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 24 June 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

#1 for me is absofuckinglutely Roger Miller's "Oo-De-Lally" from Robin Hood.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Wait, was Oliver a Disney film? If so, then "Consider Yourself" is right up there with "Oo-De-Lally". Followed closely by "A Spoonful of Sugar" and "It's A Small World" from, uh, wherever that came from.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

ahem Josh, "The Siamese Cat Song" ain't from The Aristocats. s'from Lady And The Tramp, if you plee-eeze

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm basically down with the entirety of Dumbo, notably for "Pink Elephants on Parade," which is simply amazing and "When I See an Elephant Fly."

ahem Josh, "The Siamese Cat Song" ain't from The Aristocats. s'from Lady And The Tramp, if you plee-eeze

You sure about that?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

No, zebedee is right. From "Lady and the Tramp," since the cats menace the dog, Lady (IIRC).

Also great: "Zip a Dee Doo Dah."

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

The Jungle Book is the best Disney film and has the best soundtrack. I always wanted to set the incidental music in the opening scene to a phat hip hop beat.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Also great:

"Feed the Birds"
"Let's Go Fly a Kite"
"When She Loved Me" (the only goood Randy Newman Disney song, oddly enough)
"Give a Little Whistle"
"Whistle While You Work"
"Painting the Roses Red"
"Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee"
"The Ballad of Davy Crockett"
"The Wonderful Thing about Tiggers"
"I'm Wishing" (Caetano Veloso's kid does a great version of this)

Most forgettable Disney songs/film: "Hercules," which I actually walked out of, I was so bored.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

man, i totally want to see the jungle book.

josh otm. when did this start? beauty and the beast?

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

"josh otm. when did this start? beauty and the beast?"

No, Beauty and the Beast was ok. Starting going downhill after The Lion King. Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan!! Guess Disney films just aren't as cute if theyre centred round humans.

dmun drive-in (dmun), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

i like the one that goes:

"hee-hee-hee-hee-ha-ha-ha boy am i in luck
i think about my laughing place, ha-ha-yuk-yuk-yuk-yuk
heh-heh-heh everybody's got a laughing place, a laughing place
to go-ho-ho-ho
take that frown and turn it upside down
and you'll find yours i know-ho-ho"

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

i guess its from song of the south. after riding splash mountain, it was stuck in my head for like weeks

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

I will be frank about this. I am a big fan of the Sherman Brothers. They've written some excellent melodies, although often repetitive, for Disney.

http://www.laughingplace.com/News-ID500890.asp

Among my personal picks:

The Wonderful World of Color theme song
The Monorail Song
Miracles from Molecules
The Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Room
There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow
Annette's Tall Paul

And hell, I'll admit it, Samll World.

Really, just about anything with their signature sound reduces my guard/cynicism.

And needless to say, the Louis Prima performance for Jungle Book!

(I can go on and on)

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

AND, they wrote You’re 16, You’re Beautiful and You’re Mine

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Friday, 24 June 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

"Everybody Wants To Be A Cat"

cuz a square with a horn can make you wish you weren't born every time he plays.

"i wanna be like you," "bare necessities," "the siamese cat song" all seconded/thirded

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Guess Disney films just aren't as cute if theyre centred round humans

They started getting shit when Disney started pandering to commercial needs. Mulan was more or less created to appeal to the Chinese government as they were considering banning all Disney products from the country, or something like that.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

...and with a square in the act he can set music back to the caveman days.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Anything by Randy Newman.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

No mention of "Friend Like Me" yet? Yikes. That's like the least sentimental Disney song ever and the only one I can really tolerate.

Ian Riese-Moraine eats nation-states for breakfast! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 24 June 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

"let's get together" (the parent trap)
"pay attention/ in a world of my own" + "the garden/ all in the golden afternoon" + "very good advice" (alice in wonderland)

reo, Friday, 24 June 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

"But I Be Done Seen Bout Everything When I See An Elephant Fly" from Dumbo

Racist as shit, but great!!

Also like the Mr. Stork song, also from Dumbo.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 24 June 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

"i wanna be like you" is the greatest song ever, basically. i could listen to it every day and not get sick of it. the robin hood song is also pretty cool.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the Sherman Brothers = awesome!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 25 June 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

also, Oliver wasn't a Disney movie.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 25 June 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

"The Little Mermaid," by far, has the best soundtrack. I mean, "Under the Sea," "Kiss the Girl," the instrumental bits (the little dance on the ship and so on)... It really is no contest.

I have some affection for that song Belle sings when the sheep's eating her book, too.

babyalive (babyalive), Saturday, 25 June 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

oh wait, "Mary Poppins." I'd forgotten that was Disney.

babyalive (babyalive), Saturday, 25 June 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Steamboat Willie!

Second spot to the one in Cinderella where the mice are making her dress.

Third spot goes to the hummingbird song in the Donald Duck shorts where he's out in the jungle, taking photos of birds. Mostly because it's a lot of fun to break out at random intervals with people who know what the hell you're on about.

Øystein (Øystein), Saturday, 25 June 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

"Hercules" is worth watching once for James Woods' performance.

Another vote for "I Wanna Be Like You."

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 25 June 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Roger Miller - "Not In Nottingham" (Robin Hood).

brianiac (briania), Saturday, 25 June 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

i love me some "Bugga-Boo" from the Mousercise record of the early eighties. slim down my thighs to that one.

all time, thanks for the reminder

corrs unplugged, Saturday, 29 April 2023 14:43 (three years ago)

"A Whole New World" is one of my favorite songs (period) – I love the lyrics, the campiness, etc. I was too old to see the movie when it came out, so I only discovered the song as an adult.

Are You There God? It's a-Me, Mario (morrisp), Saturday, 29 April 2023 15:03 (three years ago)

Wait – I f'd that up. The song I love is "Part of Your World," from The Little Mermaid. Sorry (I told you I don't know the movies from this era!)

Are You There God? It's a-Me, Mario (morrisp), Saturday, 29 April 2023 15:24 (three years ago)

No, 𝘐'𝘮 Breathless! (Deflatormouse), Monday, 1 May 2023 00:59 (three years ago)

i have a Beauty & the Beast tea cart that plays 'Be Our Guest' while Mrs. Potts & Chip spin around. i bought it after a very moving Yijing reading in a toy store pointed it out and alluded to its symbolism. It was breathlessly descriptive, like the Yijing was asking me to buy it for them in an exasperated tone. it was large, garish and expensive, and i had my doubts. on the way home, i processed the reading some more and realized it was a present for me. It's my most cherished possession now and i still find new layers of meaning in it. I was gonna post about that in more detail when Angela Lansbury died, but never got around to it.

But 'Little April Shower' is my favorite. Posted because it was raining (still is) and it's still April for a couple more hours and I love the sound of the rain.

No, 𝘐'𝘮 Breathless! (Deflatormouse), Monday, 1 May 2023 01:35 (three years ago)

it really is beautiful

i have a deep love for the “Alice In Wonderland” title song. it was one of the first things i learned to play on my aunt’s keyboard organ (for some reason she had a Disney songbook)

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 1 May 2023 01:51 (three years ago)

Very Good Advice from Alice in wonderland is a beautiful mid century cut. So lush. I know it's regarded as a minor film in the Disney annals but I love it. Something like that is a million times better than anything in one of the Pixar flicks.

omar little, Monday, 1 May 2023 01:55 (three years ago)

Do many Pixar films have original songs though? Other than, say Coco, and those Randy Newman songs in Toy Story

Are You There God? It's a-Me, Mario (morrisp), Monday, 1 May 2023 02:07 (three years ago)

YES, that one and "In a World of My Own" too - love those choir vocals that sound like singing wind

Vaguely Threatening CAPTCHAs, Monday, 1 May 2023 16:14 (three years ago)

Yes it's all vv gorgeous stuff. I should find that soundtrack.

omar little, Monday, 1 May 2023 16:20 (three years ago)

"Baby Mine," Dumbo
"When You Wish Upon a Star," Pinocchio
"Bibbity Bobbity Boo," Cinderella
"Someday My Prince will Come," Snow White
"Cruella De Vil," 101 Dalmatians

If we get to include live action:
"Chim Chim Che-ree," Mary Poppins
"King of New York," Newsies

fair but so uncool beliefs here (Eric H.), Monday, 1 May 2023 16:23 (three years ago)

Kind of like I can't think of singing in the rain without Malcolm McDowell:

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 1 May 2023 17:48 (three years ago)

I didn't know Alice In Wonderland was regarded as a minor film. It's definitely in my top 3

Do I look like I know what a jpeg is? (dog latin), Monday, 1 May 2023 21:32 (three years ago)

it’s an alltimer for me
mary blair’s background art is incredible, such a beautiful modern tone-shift

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 1 May 2023 21:42 (three years ago)

I think in the Disney canon it's most curiously underrated, though I love it.

omar little, Monday, 1 May 2023 22:41 (three years ago)

veg i’m glad you picked “feed the birds,” that one always gets to me. very elegant chord structure on that one
