Anyone know anything about this? I saw an issue in the bookstore today that looked intriguing, but I can't tell if it was a fluke or something actually worth subscribing to.

It's sort of interesting to read....it's always FILLED with info and bands, nice interviews, and reviews of garage punk records that no one will ever hear. It is, however, distracting that the layout of the pages has a faux indie/punk fanzine look to it; you know that the mag is doing well enough to be distributed in Borders for God's sake, so why should it have to look like some tatooed straight-edger Excacto knifed the pages in his basement? A bit misleading.

The design is the best thing about it!

I don't read it regularly, but I like the interviews and appreciate their apparently expansive view of punk.

I like Punk Planet but haven't really looked at it in a few years. I did buy a nice t-shirt from them once.

Forgot it existed.

I remember it being pretty decent.

Ellis From Die Hard, Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad it exists (heart's in the right place, etc.), but I don't read it. Jessica Hopper's column is the only consistently readable thing in it. (And even then, it's 50/50)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I used to buy it all the time until I realised I was effectively paying £3-£4 (UK prices) for Sam McPheeters' column

Very influential magazine to me in the mid to late 90s. As far as covering punk/hardcore and politics in one feel swoop, nothing came close to them then, as far as avoiding blind reactionary prose. They were never perfect, nor are they perfect, but they're good enough.

The "Life With Larry" column (aka Larry Livermore, former owner of Lookout Records, The Potatomen, etc.) is excellent.

I got to meet Dan Sinker at EMP Pop Conf 2004.. exTREMELY approachable and friendly guy. He was the only guy who was wondering why no one else wanted to go ride the amusement park rides right behind the conference.. haha.

Well, it started off as a fanzine, but grew bigger, so that's where they're coming from. IMO Punk Planet is (with Loose Lips Sink Ships) one of the best designed publications there is.

Also: well-researched indepth articles, and like someone else said, although they're based in punk, they are inclusive of all independent media. So yeah, subscribe to it.

i used to read it very often when i was working at a record store, in the mid-90's. i remember i liked their non-exclusive approach to punk, and i enjoyed reading most of the columns. i liked it a lot, indeed.

This is a shame I guess, but only as much of a shame as the fact that they ran with a quite innovative set of ideas (for a punk zine, at least) and didn't really do that much with it in the end. I guess I should pick up a new issue to see if anything's changed recently
