Only five songs?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 25 June 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

That's all that people have been able to acquire, for whatever reason. Sorry.

It's a start.

gorge (gorge), Saturday, 25 June 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm waiting for the full album, so close.

Will buy first day as well.

BeeOK (boo radley), Saturday, 25 June 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

"Cabin Fever" is quite lovely.

gorge, don't you have the whole album? could you describe some of the remaining songs? That would be awesome.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

It's... GONE!!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 25 June 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Well, here are my impressions of the five songs that are out there...

"Zoom", seven minute opener. Very, very dark-sounding for the furries. Huge, rolling sound that kind of reminds me of Spoon's "Beast and Dragon Adored" except with a symphony and choir! Opens with the sound of one of the band members jumping into a pool.

"Atomik Lust", the first non-Gruff song (of many). Starts all lovely and humming, occasionally going into a rock-out section that is unusually abrasive in a sludgy sort of way. The song doesn't quite gel for me yet.

"Lazer Beam", first single, and better than I was expecting. Driving, scratchy groove + lovely string parts and a chorus of "take a shine on the lazerbeam / it'll cleanse all the evil within you". Vocoder/handclap breakdown. Reminds me a bit of "Valet Parking", which is a good thing.

"Oi Frango!", a pretty inconsequential two-minute instrumental. Acoustic guitar and a "bopping-along" bassline.

"Cabin Fever", a six-minute piano, drum machine, choir, strings n' music box ballad, the closing track. Lyrics quite unlike any other Furries track - "welcome back my friend / where the hell ahve you been / it's nice to see you smile again". Nice little synth burbles throughout. Very, very lush, and a nice arrangement on Sean O'Hagan's part.

First impresions: highly promising. I just hope the rest holds up as well. I know that "Frequency", which will certainly be the second single, will ge gorgeous on record, and "Cloudberries" should be nice as well.

oh god, a comparison to Spoon, that's mean.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 26 June 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

man, I like all of the songs. like, a lot. atomik lust has turned into a brilliant number.

the entire album can't leak fast enough. when the japanese retail copy comes out, I'm getting it.

flu@wink.net, Monday, 27 June 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

If the rest holds up I'm willing to declare it the best album I've heard so far this year. Among their best stuff, which is saying a lot.

Jingo, Monday, 27 June 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

Well, I appreciate whoever uploaded the live tracks.. but after given them a listen, my excitement has risen nilch.

Will just have to wait for the album to be released.

donut e-g (donut), Monday, 27 June 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

has there been a full leak yet? these songs are among their best work.. lazer beam turned out really well in the studio..

duncky, Monday, 27 June 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

i wasn't that impressed with the new stuff live, but the leaked tracks of the studio records are brilliant. enough to wager it will be their best album yet, which is saying something.

mk, Monday, 27 June 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

there's a big difference between those blah recordings and the record, donut. it's amazing, and that's a word I use with prudence.

gorge (gorge), Monday, 27 June 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

OK I REALLY want to hear this!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

"it's amazing, and that's a word I use with prudence."

Simon H. (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

someone leak this please!

duncky, Tuesday, 28 June 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

hey duncky!

no - say no to the leak. those five tracks were brilliant, but I'm holding out. I haven't listened to any of them since last week, when I said I'd delete them.

enjoy bell woods (gorge), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Hey! I just listened 6 songs from the album. Seems to be a gorgeous grower, but Cabin Fever is the best song the Zombies never wrote. I love it.

zeus, Monday, 4 July 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

six months pass...
£5 in Fopp at the mo.

At least at Fopp in Reading.

I picked it up, but then I had second thoughts.

Silly me.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 23 January 2006 11:21 (twenty years ago)

I'll pop to fopp. That'll be the SACD/dual format, right?

Might even enthrall me more than the version I got from the top link!

Blimey, how many times have I played this? And still can't recall any of it.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 23 January 2006 11:25 (twenty years ago)

I didn't notice whether it was SACD/dual format or not. Perhaps it is a curate's egg, if that is the right expression.
