Attn Jazzheads: If I like Billie Holiday, what else am I likely to enjoy?

My jazz knowledge is pretty rudimentary, a spot here, a spot there. I like "God Bless the Child" and some other Billie Holiday songs that I've heard. What are the essential jazz tracks that I would like by other artists? I'm thinking about pre-1970s. School me!

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 25 June 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

(warning orbit: she is kinda one-of-a-kind)

(ie my experience is: if you like billie a lot, you will possibly like NO OTHER SINGERS USUALLY CONSIDERED TO BE IN THE FIELD OF JAZZ)

(others will doubtless consider this evil nonsense)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 25 June 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

(on preview: Mark S OTM but I'll carry on)

Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone?

I've heard a lot about Madeline Peyroux recently (she's a new singer, very much in the Billie style, but good?. Set your Joss Stone/Katie Melua detector to mild suspicion, I haven't heard her so it's not much of an recommendation).

But do get (at least) a cheapo Billie Holiday box set first!

Essential tracks to look out for: Don't Explain, Strange Fruit, Loverman, I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues, That Ole Devil Called Love, etcetera.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 25 June 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't call myself a jazzhead btw. I'm very much a dilettante/n00b.

God damn, I also misread your question as artists, not tracks. Apologies.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 25 June 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Madeline Peyroux - sounds like a billie imitator at first but her latest album leaves some of that behind and she covers more modern material as well, eg elliott smith. she seems to be mentored at the moment by larry klein which is usually a good sign (he helped some of the great releases by joni mitchell and shawn colvin).

It may be that I just like Billie Holiday then. I also like Edith Piaf--I'm not sure what the common thread is there, but there is something about them that makes them go together in my head. I've already got Holiday's better known tracks.

I'm kind of on a jazz kick, I've got a few Charlie Parker tracks. And as far as modern stuff, I love Paris Combo. I feel like there's stuff out there beyond Brubeck and I just am missing it. I suppose I could start reading on the subject.

My taste is all over the place, thanks for all and any recommendations in the jazz direction, acutally.

Unusual timbres?

I'm planning to get more into jazz over the summer (cheaply, probably start with Miles, Thelonius Monk & stuff) whilst pausing on some of the other (genre) purchasing ruts I've fallen into a little.

I have that thing where the jazz I like is often in other music (i.e. I bought a Jaco Pastorius record after loving his playing on Joni Mitchell records... he was clearly a genius, but I sold his record pretty quickly :( also totally failed to gel at all with the Weather Report material I investigated (except for the one track which was kinda Squarepusher-esque).

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 25 June 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

I think you're right, it's the distinctiveness of the voices that they have in common, and the passion. iTunes music store is a godsend, because I can check out a track pretty cheaply--that's what I'm going to do right now with Thelonius Monk--any classic one I should look for?

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 25 June 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm not a jazz head either, but I agree with what mark s said. Really liking Billie Holiday won't necessarily mean you'll have as strong a response to any other jazz singer. I love Billie Holiday, but there's no other jazz singer I come close to feeling that way about (though I have gotten to like Ella Fitzgerald, so that could bloom into love--but not because she bears much similarity to Billie Holiday).

Incidentally, there's a very nice Robert Christgau review of a new book about Billie Holiday (along with a lot of comment on other recent books about her) in a recent issue of The Nation.

xpost - Hmmm, I'm investigating a friends recommendation here! He says get "Monk's Dream" (album) and I trust his taste (kind of).

In theory I should love jazz, but I find it (classic 'normal' jazz) hard to get properly acquainted with for some reason. I want to keep trying though. There's a Vince Giurabaldi Trio album out there I know I'll love when I get round to buying it though! The one with 'Linus & Lucy' on. What I really need to help my investigations right now is probably herbal though.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 25 June 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Her jazz vocals are sorta unique, I think they're more comparable to blues artists like Etta James or Bessie Smith, or maybe Aretha. Most other female jazz singers sing pretty, whereas Billie has a unique sense of grit to her voice. Another out there suggestion: Mahalia Jackson.

If you like the cuteness of her vocals, I suggest Blossom Dearie or maybe even Dinah Washington.

If you want something more lush and orchestral, try Ella or Sarah.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 25 June 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Ok I went with Monk's Dream, the title track. It's very piano-oriented. I think I'm discovering, as I do this, what I do and don't like in different kinds of jazz, which is always fun. Based on this one track, I don't think I'll spring for the while album but it's not like I hated it or anything.

Listening to stuff "in search of" something I really like is very enjoyable for me right now. I went through a period of about 2 years where I didn't really listen to music at all (odd for someone who had spent their life in music, the music business, bands etc) and I feel like I'm just now getting some of that passion back, to seek stuff out.

I love Aretha, and Mahalia Jackson, and I'mn definitely going to search out some Etta James and Bessie Smith now--I'd forgotten about them.

xpost--I think herbal-assist is required for Thelonious. ;-)

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 25 June 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm loving Etta James--the voice reminds me of Aretha.

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 25 June 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

The singer that sounds most like Billie Holiday is the late Karen Dalton, considered a folkie to some extent, but most of her songs are really kind of a blues jazz. She sounds amazingly like Holiday, although she was a white hillbilly from Oklahoma who performed a wide range of songs from Fred Neil covers to old jazz and even r&b - to me. She only recorded two albums before her death, the best of which "It's So Hard To Know Who's Going To Love You The Best" is on CD via Koch. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who like Billie Holiday or Nina Simone or Fred Neil to any extent.

YES!

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Saturday, 25 June 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

OMG Dee, Karen Dalton is a find, I love this stuff. It reminds me of Jolie Holland, only earlier. Thanks for the tip!

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 26 June 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

man i think i need to hear some karen dalton. thanks dee.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Sunday, 26 June 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

maybe some Johnny Hartman?

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Sunday, 26 June 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah! The Hartman/Coltrane stuff is great, as is "Nature Boy" from the later 'For Trane.' Actually, I've never heard anything bad or even just OK by him at all.

Andy Bey is another great voice, come to think of it.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 26 June 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

L. Armstrong

oops (Oops), Sunday, 26 June 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the Hartman suggesetion! I had never heard of him. He's got all the stuff that made me love Joe Jackson's choice to covers on Jumpin Jive--the narrative lyrics, the bounce. I found another favorite. It's jazz with hooks. I tend to like that better than the stuff that noodles all over the place.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 26 June 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Another woman singer who doesn't really sound like Billie but also doesn't really sound like most anybody else is Carmen MacRae. The Dinah Washington and Blossom Dearie recommendations are very good as well.

Monk is always going to be piano oriented - he's a piano player, and I'm not just saying that to be snide. He really probably has more piano in his sound and style than most other pianists. "Monk's Dream" is very good, but one of my favorites - and it's not one of his best known - is "Rhythm-a-ning."

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 26 June 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

OMG I just got this Johnny Hartman track "I Fall In Love Too Easily" and I absolutely love it. What a classic song.

I'll check out Rhythm-a-ning, thx Austin.

Louis Jordan!

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Sunday, 26 June 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Gear! Your Johnny Hartman rec. was right on. Any recommendations on tracks for Louis Jordan?

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 26 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

David Sedaris.

Justin, Sunday, 26 June 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

i totally second (or rather confirm) the madeleine peyroux recommendation. her album is amazing, she sounds a bit like billie holiday at a first listen, but then she's got her own spell (and it's great the way she covers leonard cohen or elliott smith and makes the songs her own).
howe gelb played this album at every show on his solo tour in spain in march, and i know for a fact that the album's sales went up in every city the day after.

joan vich (joan vich), Sunday, 26 June 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

OMG Dee, Karen Dalton is a find, I love this stuff.

I've only heard a snippet but it made me want to listen to Kath Bloom.

So....try some Kath Bloom!

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Thanks all for the recommendation--I'm working on them as fast as I can :-)
