I once nearly flew to New Zealand to see the Clean play. I may yet fly to England to see the Ex Orkest play.

Douglas, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of the acts playing at either of the ATPs (as Douglas alludes to) - I wouldn't mind seeing the Dead C. Other than that, I can't really say. The farthest I have gone is DC (which isn't cross- country, but was pretty damn far for this kid) - conveniently enough, a lot of the acts I'd fly to see (such as Scrawl and Franklin Bruno) were all traveling to DC as well. That was quite convenient.

If people stopped badmouthing the Fall's recent live performances, they'd be on my list, for damn sure. Oh, and GRAEME DOWNES (scheduled to play in Boston some time ago, but cancelled due to inclement weather).

David Raposa, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I'd travel to a different country several times to catch a show. Then again, Vancouver is just 2.5 hours north of Seattle, so maybe that doesn't count.. heh heh

SERIOUSLY thinking about ATP UK, tho.

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I miss all the rock concerts that come to my town usually, but I'm much more motivated to see old jazz guys that might die soon. I went across the country to see Elvin Jones, for one, he was probably at the top of my list.

Jordan, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Current 93 Because they will never come to the West Coast.

dan, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if money was not an issue i would fly to timbuktoo to see babs

goeff, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Although it was only to the Netherlands, I have attended way too many Kiss My Jazz concerts. I think I've seen them over 15 times during their short lifespan. The guitarplayer even approached my friend as a result of seeing him so much in the crowd. hah!

I'd contemplate seeing Gang of Four, DNA and Mars. Even, dare I say it, Big Black.

helenfordsdale, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I travelled from Edinburgh to Belfast to see Radiohead. Most gigs involve a trip across the country to Glasgow cos there's no decent venues in Edinburgh, it's just an hour by road though

leigh m, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and GRAEME DOWNES

his solo gigs have been pretty diabolical - hes got a terrible guitar sound and he uses a tinny drum machine, and he plays the songs identically to the originals except when he forgets the words. Save the trip and stay home and listen to his records.

hamish, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

are we just including bands that actuallly exist? okay AMM, Fushitsusha and Ghost Club. And Plagal Grind if they ever reform again.

hamish, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

some friends of mine travelled from dublin to london to see jeff mills this new years eve,and i'm regretting not going, although i wouldn't have been able to get the money even if i'd tried...given more than a week's warning, however,i'd definitely have gone to see him... even though they play here fairly frequently,i'd also travel fairly far to go and see the super furry animals, and i'd go the extra mile to see the dirty three or tom waits as well...

robin, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

definitely fushitsusha. the boredoms, natch. i'd like to see the dead c, but i don't know about travelling great distances to do so. hmmmm... atp uk is looking mighty tasty; and i'll agreee with douglas about the ex orkest...seeing the ex was one of my last great rock show experiences. even if my then girlfriend compared them repeatedly to big country. (who are -better- but that's neither here nor there.)

jess, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

second the boredoms. acid mother temple is going on tour in the states soon, so'll they'll have to tide me over. I'd drive across country to catch Shellac. Hearing the mp3's from some of their shows sounds like a)Albini hasn't lost his wit, b) his guitar work is probably incredible in a live setting, and c) i just want to curse at them.

Brock K, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I once flew home to NYC from Ohio to see the Mission UK, but alas....that's the albatross I must wear for the rest of my days.

I'd travel cross-country to see a reunited Killing Joke.

With all due respect, I wouldn't even cross a room to see the Boredoms.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

While I've never actually officially heard them, I'd imagine seeing the Clusone Trio would be a treat, if only for all the stories I've heard about Han Bennink.

And, of course, checking their AMG page reveals they're splitsville. Of course.

David Raposa, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As a former resident of Oxford I have to say that I generally had to travel across the country (well OK, to London) to see ANY BAND whose following wouldn't necessarily fit into the Zodiac or the microscopically-sized SU stage at Brookes.

All the more annoying when there is a perfectly good venue - the Apollo - which could go on any band's touring schedule, except it can't because it's always choc-a-bloc with crap musicals, dodgy MoR acts (or "tributes"), dodgier "comics" - just like the difference between GLR and BBC Radio Oxford, if you live beyond the Lewknor turn- off, it's instantly assumed that you're an ignorant wuss who deserves nothing better than the playlist used by Radio 2 circa November 1974 (or still used by Ed Stewart on a Sunday - "here are those magical minxes The Three Degrees" - I mean, really!) or else it's Fucks FM or (ha!) Fusion FM with their BETTER MUSIC MIX get the sten guns out NOW!

We need to pass the hat around and get Tom outta there!

Terry Shannon, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd go a long way to see the blood and fire sound system.

cybele, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If Lifter Puller reunited I'd travel anywhere in the U.S. to see them, and if it was only for European shows, then I'd bite the bullet and fly over. I am getting so anxious to see Destroyer/Dan Bejar live that I think I'd put in a long drive to North Dakota to do so. I don't suppose Destroyer will play NoDak any time soon, actually, though now that I think of it I can't think of many better places for them to play.

John Darnielle, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If MBV did a one-off only in the UK, somehow, in some form...yeah, I'd go. Saw 'em twice, but I want to hear Kevin S. make the wallpaper peel again.

Otherwise, no individual band. Something like Terrastock, though, sure, but that's for the whole deal.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There is a well-known artistic figure (clue: contributing regularly to IL* at the moment) who I travelled from Dorset to London, which would not be a great distance at all by North American standards and is hardly even "across the country" within the UK, to see three times within less than six months. I know exactly what I was thinking, though I don't think it now.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I travelled to LA from Chicago to see Radiohead. And then from Chicago to England. In my opinion, it was quite worth it.

Melissa W, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Peter Hammill. I am told that the Tubes played in London last December. Damn.

Norman Phay, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I was living in Manchester, I always used to travel back "to see bands in London" (heh heh, this was a bit of a lie because it was also partly due to the fact I HATED MANCHESTER AND MANCHESTER HATED ME). Anyway, the bands I travelled Manchester -> London were David Devant (about 10 times in all), Baxendale (about 10 times in all) and Momus. There might have been some others too but I can't remember.

On Thursday, I'm supposed to be going with Riviera to see Riviera in Bath but it depends if there's room in the van.

jamesmichaelward, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well gawl damn Brock, Acid Mothers Temple are going to be at William and Mary in March, so there's your chance!

Clarke B., Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1) Gories reunion
2) Failing that a Dirtbombs/Demolition Dollrods show

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the honesty of Ben Folds Five, but I would travel oh so far to be able to see Tiny Tim again.

Ashley Andel, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
I would fly, no, I would crawl across the world to see Leonard Cohen. I wonder if he will ever tour again....

Magnus Jansson, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd roll across America in a barrel to see a Husker Du reunion concert. Not just for the music, but also to see if Bob and Grant can stand on the same stage without having to put up chicken wire and mines between each other.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the rumour is that he is

anthony, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No current bands, except maybe Clinic, if I had more energy. Then again, maybe Super Furry Animals, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Kid Silver, and ShelleyDevoto, if they weren't doing dates over here, and if I was really in the mood for travel. I'd do the cross-country thing in a second for renunions of The Smiths, Killing Joke, Dead Can Dance, Kitchens of Distinction, and maybe Talk Talk.

Tim DiGravina, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I travelled across the country to see Low. Granted, I was going there anyway, but I WOULD have though.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would go a long way to see Boredoms. They're coming to the States for ATP, but without Yamamoto and Hira! Damn!

I would go a long way to see XTC, but only because they haven't played live for quite a while.

dleone, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Revive. J0hn D@rn13113, did you go to the Lifter Puller reunion at Brownie's last August?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Had Young Marble Giants followed through with their planned one-off reunion a couple years back, I would have flown to London to see them. OK, that's a country and an ocean.

It's hard to think of any current bands that would inspire me to do the same. I'm sure there are a few, but they don't come to mind immediately.

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

short of Hendrix rising from the grave to sit in with Fushitsusha, I can't think of anything I'd cross state lines to see.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I would go a long way to see Boredoms. They're coming to the States for ATP, but without Yamamoto and Hira! Damn!

what is your source dleone? (please don't say the boredoms list).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I considered going to CA for Savage Republic (who ended up playing in NY!!)and The Dead C (who didn't :( ). I will plan my trip to NZ around a Dead C or Plagal Grind reunion show.

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorta doing this for Turbonegro (actually I was heading east anyway).

Kris (aqueduct), Thursday, 13 March 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

If MBV did a one-off only in the UK, somehow, in some form...yeah, I'd go. Saw 'em twice, but I want to hear Kevin S. make the wallpaper peel again.

Heh. Funny to see this.
