keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 26 June 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Like an album someone told you to get and when you got it, you don't like it.

Sorry for the bad translation from before. I did it in a hurry.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Sunday, 26 June 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Huh?

You mean like "this guy told me to buy the new Mercury Rev, I did, and it sucked. Damn you, This Guy!"?

van dyke freaking parks

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

This happens to me more often with films than with music. I think people have by and large given up on recommending music to me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

me too on avalanches.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

How can you not like the Avalanches? You guys with your "Beep Bop, Rizzle Frizzle, Glitch Glatch, Gleep Glop" music.

The Avalanches are great, but I guess people have their opinions so I don't care if you hate them

If you want ROBOT MUSIC then go buy a robot, you Beep Boppers.

P.S. Someone recommended me the first XTC album (I think it's called Drums and Wires) and I didn't care for it. I think it's because I liked Black Sea too much that I couldn't listen to any other XTC album.

Same with Modest Mouse. I liked Good News for People Who Love Bad News so much that I couldn't get into their other albums.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Sunday, 26 June 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

The Avalanches was great that one summer the record was out, I've had zero inclination to hear them again since. Serious burn-out.

"Beep Bop, Rizzle Frizzle, Glitch Glatch, Gleep Glop"

I like all that and I like robot music! 4EVA \m/ and disco thx.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

I like it too. LONG LIVE ROBOTS!

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

I'm proud to say I never got suckered into the Avalanches.

moley (moley), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
The Postal Service - Give Up
Neutral Milk Hotel - that Aeroplane Over the Sea album

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 27 June 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

xpost - me either (Avalanches), my flatmate had it.

Amazon and other chatter and reviews (possibly here), recommended me to get the first Mu album, I didn't hate it, but I was a huge dollop of underwhelmed. Enough that I sold it.

I downloaded "Piracy Funds Terrorism" and I don't hate that exactly, but can't believe her almost asthmatic vocals & complete lack of real prescence/authority on the mic don't bum more people out.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Avalanches here too.

Super Cub (Debito), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

the majority of Pitchfork Media's "Best New Music" section to thread.

"wow, such avalanches hate, i am surprised!"

We have been silent for much to long! A great weight has been lifted! We are free, my brothers and sisters! Free!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 June 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

About a thousand people have told me how great The Band's brown album is, so I bought it. I actually really like Music From Big Pink, but I can't stand the brown album other than Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, which is great.

Generally, I think I know who to trust and who not to when it comes to music, and this usually works. Still, there are exceptions. A lot of my trusted friends love Randy Newman, who I detest, but luckily I listened to their records and thus never spent any money on him.

I am on record as hatin' on the Avalanches on a thread on this very board, long ago, back before it was cool to do so.

moley (moley), Monday, 27 June 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

Okay, fine, mole, yoo are the king of avalanches hate! You will lead us!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 June 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

I heard a track by "the books" that I enjoyed on the Stylus magazine site from the the "lost and safe" record but I bought "The Lemon of Pink" based on a bunch of stuff that I read 'cause I cut together found video footage a lot and I'm curious about what can be done with found sound.
I haven't sold it back yet but what I heard was a lot of uninspired loops and some stupid speech excerpt pontificating on the greatness of Gandhi.

theodore fogelsanger (herbert hebert), Monday, 27 June 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

That avalanches album DOES suck.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Monday, 27 June 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

The Books album has too many throwaway tracks, but a few of them are good. I agree though, what they "do" with "found sound" is not very "interesting"

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 27 June 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

Also, I bought Sleater-Kinney's "Dig Me Out" in 97 or 98 after reading reviews and that was pretty dissapointing. Especially after hearing Watchmaker" by Excuse 17, which is far more exalting than most of anything I've heard by SK. I felt pretty embarrassed listening to "Word+Guitar." There was something immediately dated about the special olympian positivism of the lyrics: "I'm a girl and I can make music too"
"congratulations"

theodore fogelsanger (herbert hebert), Monday, 27 June 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

and some more on recommendation:
Lightning Bolt - Ride the Skies
Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain
Manitoba - Up in Flames
the Magnolia Electric Co.
SK- to me is girl music that desp doesn't want to be girl music. so self conscious and mildly bad. haven't bought anything yet.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 27 June 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

If you like Bonnie Prince Billy, you'll just love Songs: Ohia trumpeted the Rough Trade website.
Not true as it turned out. Ditto anyone thats ever been compared to Boards of Canada, St Etienne or Belle and Sebastian.

Kim Tortoise, Monday, 27 June 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

Manitoba and MIA seconded, both hugely less than the sum of the hype surrounding them. The blame for MIA's hyping lies square on the shoulders of ILM...

And whoever persuaded me to buy GYBE!'s "Lift Yr Skinny Fists" is due a talking to as well; by 20 minutes in all I could think of was Fields of The Nephilim (without the vocals).

Bill A (Bill A), Monday, 27 June 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

from ilxor - sugarbabes, lemonjelly, ms dynamite (at this i stopped buying recommendations from ilxor)

from noise dudes - sunburnt hand of a sunburnt man - what is the point of those guys??????? yawn.

worse album i was sent by a pr company? my life story's solo project ... inside:outside with a recommendation to listen to it.

doomie x, Monday, 27 June 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

ditto on the Avalanches and Cornelius' second album .... my god the Avalanches are just awful arent they?

doomie x, Monday, 27 June 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Yep. I'm so pleased to see dissenting voices here. I ditched the Avalanches recd a year or so back - unlistenable.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 27 June 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE THE AVALANCHES DON'T LIKE LIFE

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 27 June 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

no doubt we'll be getting similar posts vis-a-vis Annie From Norway in 2009.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 27 June 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

The last Walkmen album has been the biggest turd in the pail so far this year for me.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 27 June 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

anthony and his johnson!!!!!
the worst music I've ever heard.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 27 June 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

peepee (peepee), Monday, 27 June 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

antony and the johnsons is the third best album so far this year and it's like that and that's the way it is.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 27 June 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

there's been more than three albums released this year!

peepee (peepee), Monday, 27 June 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

capital "S" stasist, no less

peepee (peepee), Monday, 27 June 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

I just got back from my favorite record store in Chapel Hill where I tried to sell the Avalanches CD, inspired by this thread, only to have the dude tell me it's "too scratched" for him when I originally bought it used from him in the exact same condition~!@~!@~!~!@#@!

you will pay for this ILM!

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Geraldine Fibbers - Butch ... i tried to like it.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

My fat ass just bought the "Clap Your Hands Say Yeah" never having heard a note, and I am not feeling it too much yet. The reference points in reviews are insane (Neutral Milk Hotel?).

Then again, I hated the Broken Social Scene album after it was recommended to me, but now, 2 years later, I am loving it.

On a Strict El Cholo Diet (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

the avalanches record, which i too was chumped into buying by ilm, is one of the worst records i've ever paid for.
