"a certain baseline intelligence and tastefulness"

ack. i find his program unspeakably bland. i probably miss some really nice tunes that way, though.

Met him once at a KCRW event near where I live -- my friend EJL DJs there and I was invited along. He was there with his newborn baby and seemed a happy soul, and the food was nice. Beyond that, I don't think about him much.

The New York Times often publishes material that could be considered "true" to only a very thin slice of reality. Nothing allegedly ballyhooed on "Morning Becomes Eccentric" is reflected in any significant southland sales statistics. I reckon most acts would trade airtime away on it in a sec for airtime on KROQ or even "The Jack."

"'Intelligence and tastefulness'" are way over-rated as necessities in entertainment. Story falls into the cliche category, which is popular in big news dailies arts writing, that music should be something journalists, editors and readers find intellectually satisfying, or vitamins for the brain and soul.

I just heard that "Jack" radio format for the first time today - my audio engineering professor told us we had to listen to the radio this week as homework, otherwise it would have continued to escape my notice. It seemed pretty 80scentric - during the time I was listening, I heard Talking Heads' "Life During Wartime," the Pet Shop Boys' "What Have I Done To Deserve This" and Simple Minds' "Alive And Kicking."

"was a crucial early advocate of Alanis Morissette, Moby and Garbage."

Also Coldplay and David Gray. And they quote Chris Martin saying Harcourt has "impeccable taste." At least I know who to blame now.

When does KEXP's John Richards get his NYT write-up?

marc h., Sunday, 26 June 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

xpost.

Yeah, my impression is that "The Jack" is Eighties-centric, but it can also get odd, putting in 70's classic rock and the occasional high profile indie thing from a few years back. For something that advertises its shuffle and idiosyncratic character, it's frozen.

"impeccable taste". More of the music as good vitamins for you. I'd laugh if for once I saw the equivalent, "But Charlie, people don't want tuna with good taste, they want tuna that tastes good."

"crucial early advocate..."

How do you test that one? Ask one or two or three people? How 'bout this: MTV was a crucial early advocate of Alanis Morissette.

Anyway, any newspaper articles that actually seriously proclaim people to be kings of something, or deliver various forms of hagiography revolving around their wonderful mental acuity and basic greatness and genius should peg the bogometer. Not because of any fault of the subject, but the workings of the journalist and editors who are delivering you what's called "a script."

George Smith, Sunday, 26 June 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I guess he is kinda important. in that music swap thing they do over here with Steve Lamacq he has played music that has since gone on to be successful: Jem, Arcade Fire

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

At least two of the DJs at my station are aware of him, and manage to mimmick his taste pretty damn well.

Not really a good thing.

Steev (Steev), Monday, 27 June 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

Also that "Jack" station took over our oldies station. That pissed off a good number of people here (in Chicago).

"'Intelligence and tastefulness'" are way over-rated as necessities in entertainment.

I disagree! Maybe true in various critical circles, but not when it comes to what is served to the public through the largest media avenues for "entertainment" (see primetime TV, summer blockbusters, Clearchannel radio, etc etc). Of course this is a matter of personal taste, but I find those examples to be a little short on the "intelligence and tastefulness" (and of course what that even means is debatable). </snob>

nic harcourt is a good guy but i cannot stand his taste in music. he has an uncanny ability to pick thr wrong band / track. i have had to actuially turn off morning becomes eclectic so many times when he drops these unbelievably crap records

my wife and i call the signature sound at the center of his world view the "weedy white man". sort of whiney, bland, watered down rockism. intelligent, perhaps, but just not very good/catchy/fun

as a rare non-corporate voice in an influential market he has perhaps one of the most important DJ platforms in music. but for my money he fails miserable at either being eclectic or having good taste.

one year passes...
i realized recently he's one of the "most important" for influence, yet one of the fucking worst

man that guy loves Jenny Lewis and Thievary Corporation

you should burn him a CD or 3! dude seriously needs the funk. all that sensitive singer/songwriter and tasty indie rock first thing in the AM, jesus, I'd rather wake up to potty-mouthed talk jocks.

yep. moms just called me about this last night. he's currently the music supervisor of the new 90210. think he'll be ok. it might be a welcome change for the station to get someone new.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

Why am I not surprised:

KCRW announces the appointment of Jason Bentley as Music Director and host of Morning Becomes Eclectic, effective December 1. Bentley will leave his current evening time slot to take over KCRW’s signature music program from 9am to noon PST, Monday through Friday.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 November 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

No surprise at all zzzzzzzz

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Monday, 17 November 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

C'mon man think of all the new amount of dull cusp-of-1996 ambient techno you'll be able to hear now.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 November 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

A co-worker who pitches music to TV shows told me that Hahcourt apparently doesn't really do much on 90210 except collect a paycheck.
