Classic!

Guayaquil, Sunday, 26 June 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

No Neko = NOT classic.

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Sunday, 26 June 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

My original conception for this thread was that it would be the thread where we declare that the show was classic.

So, classic, even without Neko.

Guayaquil, Sunday, 26 June 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Concert was three blocks from my apartment.

Still didn't go.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

So, it may have been classic because I wasn't there harshing everyone's mellow

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

I live about 10 blocks away, but was so burnt out from being in the hot sun at Summerstage that I skipped it. The afterparty at Southpaw was alright though

Candicissima (candicissima), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Well, let me take this opportunity to tell you guys who weren't there that it was classic.

Guayaquil, Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

All the Park Slope ilxers should meet at Second Helpings and discuss why this show wasn't classic.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 26 June 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Neko wasn't there? Did Carl Newman sing her songs? Was Bejar there?

On a Strict El Cholo Diet (Bent Over at the Arclight), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

Argh, forgot about the show. Ended up puking my self-respect at Buttermilk.

Suzy Creemcheese (SuzyCreemcheese), Monday, 27 June 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Suzy: Dud. Especially compared to the New Pornographers show. Which was classic.

Guayaquil, Monday, 27 June 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

these guys blow

That One Guy (That One Guy), Monday, 27 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

How many Park Slope ilx0rs are there?!

(other than me)

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 27 June 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm right on the other side of Grand Army Plaza. So, close but no cigar for me.

Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 27 June 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

I'm on G.A.P. (yikes, the abbreviation) as well, on the Slope side. Carroll/PPW.

Sorry to bore everyone else.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 27 June 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

Fuck that! Thread hijacking = OK.

All my friends live in fuckn Williamsburg and I refuse to move!

I'm in North Slope... 7th/17th

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Monday, 27 June 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

I live in L.A., I wasn't there. But from what I hear, Neko wasn't there, so that's a dud.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Monday, 27 June 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

I rather enjoyed Feist at the Bowery instead.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 June 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

low overall volume + lack of carl/neko stage banter = not classic.

the fake neko they're touring with sounded eerily like neko, though.

all my friends live in fuckn park slope (or windsor terrace or sunset park) and i live in fuckn williamsburg.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 27 June 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

tofu: this explains both why you did not see me and i did not see you.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 27 June 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

Aaaah. Got it. The show was nice, but not overwhelming. A couple of truly classic moments tho; including a nice cover of Davies' "There's Nothing In This World To Stop Me Worryin' About That Girl" and some great rockist guitar posing antics and a solo acoustic version of "Inside and Out".

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 June 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

ooh i would like to hear a solo acoustic version of inside and out.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 27 June 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

She apparently recorded it for a Brit radio station when she was touring Europe; it was quite sweet. The audience was totally silent.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 June 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

I had tacos. I win.

BurritoBuddy, Monday, 27 June 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I was there, but not really close enough to see it or hear it very well. I was surprised when Matthew P. told me after the show that it wasn't Neko on stage, since it sounded so much like her.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 27 June 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Tacos: Classic.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Monday, 27 June 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

my friends and I smuggled beer to the east river band shell, really fun, relaxing, sunny

much better than overcrowded prospect park shows, no matter who is playing

breezy, Monday, 27 June 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I was there for like five minutes, looking for someone I obviously wasn't going to be able to find. Best summary of the event I've heard thus far: "Looks like nobody's on Friendster tonight!"

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 27 June 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

the sound was terrible! not classic!

joseph (joseph), Monday, 27 June 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

That was my fifth time seeing the band, and it was not classic. It was a good show, and Kathryn Calder did a decent job filling in for Neko, but the sound was weak and they just were not even close to the top of their game.

Nice setlist, though.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 27 June 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Also live mere blocks away at 12th/7th Ave. Only the most promising lineup all summer and I had to be in DC for a surprise bday party. Urgh.

Okay, I see here that it might not have been stellar, but when you factor Stars opening, and the fact that it was in Prospect Park and FREE ... NOW how do you rate it? Was it crowded?

Also, more details on the setlist? Mass Romantic? Holy Wars? Divine Right?

bkjj40a (bkjj40a), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

The New Pornographers @ Prospect Park Bandshell 6/25/2005
It's Only Divine Right / Graceland / Use It / From Blown Speakers / The Bleeding Heart Show / Jackie / Mass Romantic / The Electric Version / Testament To Youth In Verse / Star Bodies / The Laws Have Changed / Sing Me Spanish Techno / The Body Says No / Twin Cinema / The Fake Headlines / All For Swinging You Around / Slow Descent Into Alcoholism / Letter From An Occupant

They had to rush at the end, they were told they were running out of time, so some songs that were probably scheduled for the encore (like traditional show-closer "Centre for Holy Wars") had to be cut so that they could fit in the two big hits at the end so people went home happy.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

five years pass...

REVIVE because I saw them last night. They've still got it. Slayed a crowd of ~1000. Bejar, Case, Newman, Calder all present and hollering. Less "Together"-heavy set than I might have thought -- these guys seem to enjoy playing the greatest hits set. (Though at this point it's not clear to me what the consensus "greatest hits" are -- "Spanish Techno" and "Twin Cinema" seemed to generate more crowd frenzy than "Alcoholism" and "Letter From An Occupant" did not appear.)

Kay Sanneh's review of their 2003 NYC show is interesting in retrospect:
