I'm listening to the new Warlocks album and it's amazing. It sounds like they've been listening to The Beach Boys or Heavenly a lot since the Phoenix album. I give it a 10 for it's amazingness.

I think everyone on ilm hates the warlocks except me. and you.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

i dont hate em

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

I love 'em.

So that's four.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

My brother liked the Warlocks and but then when he became an ILM'r he didn't like them anymore. I think he likes the old albu, but he doesn't like this new one.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I am required to like them.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I kinda like them too.

dlp9001, Monday, 27 June 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

i thought i recalled some thread where everyone hated them except me. but that was a long long time ago. the worm turns!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

i saw them in philly twice and they were great each time. this was after the first ep had come out on bomp and then maybe when the first album came out. i just can't hate 3 guitars and two drummers making that fuzzy racket in front of me. one of the drummers was wearing a spacemen 3 t-shirt the one time i saw them, so it wasn't like their cards weren't on the table.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Could you perhaps provdie a YSI?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I saw them in either 2002 or 2003, can't remember for sure. But it was in a club about the size of my bedroom and I couldn't hear clearly for three days afterwards.

I'd liked them before that, but after that night I consider myself a lifelong fan.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

they should definitely put out a live record.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I'll YSI it Tomorrow or Tuesday. OK, Brainwasher?

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the first time i saw them was in a really tiny spot too. nobody was there to see them. they were opening for nikki sudden. i felt kinda bad that i had a really nice time talking to nikki at the bar, but then i left after the warlocks stopped playing. sorry, nikki! i'm sure you were great.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

OK. Thanks a lot :)

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

OK Brainwasher. You're an alright, outta sight kinda guy

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

They're playing a secret gig next Wednesday at some new bar in Shoreditch somewhere.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

i like 'em, though i haven't listened to phoneix in an age

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I still like the phoenix album but i think this one is just kind of....lame i guess

That One Guy (That One Guy), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

i love the warlocks!

doomie x, Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

I should love them. But I don't. I'm not sure if the fault is with them or with me.

MIS Information (kate), Thursday, 30 June 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

they are the best sunshine los angeles version of velvet underground. they should make you sad and dirty like spaceman 3 but they make me feel that i want to move to l.a. and out of london gloom.

doomie x, Thursday, 30 June 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

That's probably *exactly* why I don't like them. I hate LA. I hate sunshine and plastic.

I just feel that the very nature of dronerock makes it better suited to darker atmospheres... the dark dirty streets of NYC made the Velvets what they were. Like the dark satanic mills of the midlands made Spacemen 3 what they were.

MIS Information (kate), Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

nothing beats sunshine drone, though!

doomie x, Thursday, 30 June 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I like this a lot. I don't know about LA, but sunshine yes. It is a bit evocative of that occasional Jesus & Mary Chain's feel-good vibe that the Raveonettes also flirt with.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Thursday, 30 June 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

They're just sorta there. I can't get excited about them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

(And I've seen them live. They were, at least, more interesting than Black Fuckup Lameosity Shitfit.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, LA is pretty dirty

YES. You can't convince me that re-recording every 60's girl group hit with two drummers and four guitarists wouldn't be the greatest thing ever.

This album is great, definitely in my top five for 2005 so far. I think it's officially released in a little over a week?

doomie confuses me.

researching the warlocks as i hrecently had had enough of abstract electronic music and required something to clean up the head :

fifteen years pass...

Phoenix : still great.
US cover vs UK cover.
no idea why they changed it, as the US cover is bloody brillant.
